Stewart Taylor Smith, Sr., began military service on 6 June 1861 in Bath County Courthouse, Bath Co, VA; Stewart Smith was born and grew up in Rockbridge County, Virginia. He and his brother Charles enlisted for service in the Civil War the same day on 6 Jun 1861 at the Bath County Courthouse. Stewart originally enlisted in Company G, Virginia 25th Infantry Regiment. He was later transferred to Company G, Virginia 11th Cavalry Regiment. Stewart was wounded while serving in this regiment on 30 Apr 1863 at Shinston, Harrison Co, WV during a rear guard engagement. According to the Application for a Confederate Pension he filled out years later in 1911, he still retained a bullet in the calf of his leg and his knee cap had been slashed by a sabre cut. He was a prisoner of war at Parish Lookout for 1 year. Listed in the regiment as Stuart "C" Smith. (via Findagrave.com.)
