Emily Jane, second daughter of William and Jemima Jane (Hillyard) Carter, (son of Samuel Hillman Carter, son of Isaac P.Carter), born May 17, 1854, Matthews, Grant county, Ind.;
When two years old, she with her parents, went to Henry county, lowa, where they settled on prairie land to make a farm and where she grew up with the country in a good neighborhood, enjoying the advantages of good schools and pleasant surroundings. As the housework did not need her services, she helping on the farm and could husk fifty bushels of corn as quickly as her father could.
Randolph D. McConnell, son of Alexander and Elizabeth Tallman McConnell, was born April 22, 1851, Clarington, Ohio; died 19
His parents were natives of the United States. He came with them when he was four years old to Henry county, Iowa, where they settled on prairie land that was rapidly filling up with a good class of citizens. Here he grew up with the country, with surroundings calculated to make noble men of the boys.
Emily Jane Carter and Randolph D. McConnell were married Sept. 25, 1872, Mt. Pleasant, Henry county, Iowa.
One child was born to this union:
William Alexander, October 31, 1878, Henry county, Iowa; died October 31, 1878, Mt. Pleasant, Henry county, Iowa.
They settled on a farm joining her father's and for over twenty years the three sisters and families lived in homes not half a mile from the homestead, a contented happy family; but now one lives four miles west of Mt. Pleasant, one on the home-stead farm and this family in Mt. Pleasant. All have plenty to supply them with the comforts of life and they live to enjoy it.
She was raised by Methodist parents and he was brought up under the influence of Methodism and during their married life have been engaged in the work of the church. Since moving to Mt. Pleasant they have attended the Disciple Christian church and while not so actively engaged in church work as they were before they went to town, are conscientious Christian citizens.

Funeral Held For Mrs. McConnellFuneral services were held at the Crane Funeral home this morning for Mrs. Emily McConnell, who died at her home here Tuesday. Rev. E.L. Jeambey officiated at the services. Mrs. Tom Cathey and Sam Ewart sang "Jesus Savior Pilot Me" and "It Is Well With My Soul."
Burial was at Forest Home cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers, Jesse Anderson, Guy Anderson, Ralph Montgomery, Walker Montgomery, Miles Mallams and Mark Lawrence.
Emily Jane (Carter) McConnell was born May 17, 1854, and departed this life July 15, 1941, at her home, 202 N. Main street, after a long illness at the age of 87 years, 1 month and 27 days.
She was married to Randolph D. McConnell on Sept. 25, 1872. One child was born who died in infancy.
She was converted at an early age and after moving to Mt. Pleasant, attended the Presbyterian church.
She was a daughter of William and Jemima Carter. Her older sister, Mrs. Martha Montgomery, preceded her in death the year of 1929. Remaining is a sister, Mrs. J.L. Anderson, Mount Pleasant, Iowa, a niece, Mrs. Myrtle Mallams, who they reared from infancy, the other niece, and nephews are Mrs. Mark Lawrence, Mt. Pleasant, Arch Montgomery, McMinnville, Oregon, Ralph Montgomery, Mt. Pleasant, Walker Montgomery, Monmouth, Ill., Jesse Anderson and Guy Anderson, Mt. Union, Iowa, and other relatives and numerous friends.
Deceased are two nieces, Mrs. Lulu Bonnifield and Mrs. Mina Housel.
