JOHN MERRITT, farmer, Rome Twp., Sec. 3; P.O. Olin; born in the town of Ovid, Seneca Co., N.Y., in 1806; removed to Orleans Co., and then to Lockport, and then to Cattaraugus Co., and December 11, 1836, started for Iowa; owns 754 acres; he took up a claim, built a log cabin, and sold his team and returned by the way of St. Louis and the Ohio River to New York; started in the fall of 1837 for Iowa.; arrived at Clinton, Iowa, where he remained until November 9, 1837, when he came to Jones Co. In politics, Republican; in religion, Methodist. Has been School Director, Trustee, Road Supervisor; was the first Road Supervisor in this part of the county. His first wife, Catherine Culp, was born in Pennsylvania in 1800; came to Niagara Co., N.Y., and married September 30, 1827; died December 14, 1835, and left seven children—Horatio, Agnes, Joseph, Jerome, William, Dollie (deceased) and Cornelius. His second wife, Caroline Dunlap (was the Widow Harvey), was born in Pennsylvania; married Mr. Merritt in 1856 and had seven children—L. V. (now Mrs. Hay, of Jackson Township), Malinda (now Mrs. Berely, of Jackson Township), Elmer, Deligha, Hiram Sherman, Charles Willis, Cordelia.

Caroline was the second wife of John Merritt.
In 1856 John Merritt married Caroline Harvey nee Dunlap, who had been born in Pennsylvania on October 20, 1827. Although a widow, Caroline was not yet thirty years old and some twenty one years younger than John. Caroline and John would have seven children: two boys and five girls - an exact turnabout from the five boys and two girls of John’s first marriage. Caroline and John’s first child was Lovie Viola, born in 1857. Malinda “Linnie” followed in 1859 and Ella /Eleanor Jane in 1860. Delila L. was born in 1863, Hiram Sherman in 1865, Charles Willis in 1867, and finally Cordelia in 1870. John Merritt was about sixty four years of age at the time of the birth of his last child Cordelia.

The funeral of Mrs. Etta Gordon Tallman was held at the United Brethren church, last Friday afternoon, the services being conducted by Rev. C. Dillavan, and interment was made in the Olin cemetery. Mrs. Tallman was only 32 years of age. She is survived by her husband, Ellsworth Tallman, and two little boys. She is also survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Gordon, a sister, Mrs. Adah Rorah, and a brother, John Gordon.
She was buried in June 1918 in Olin Cemetery, Olin, Jones Co., IA, Findagrave #54551664.

Margaret Tallman, age 88 of Morley, died Thursday August 29, 2002 at the Jones Regional Medical Center, Anamosa, following a sudden illness. Funeral Services will be held 10:30 Tuesday, September 3, 2002 at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Anamosa. Interment will be in the Green Center Cemetery, Morley. Pastor Pat Slater will officiate at the services. Friends may call from 4 until 8 Monday at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Anamosa. Surviving is her son Jim (Bev) Tallman, Olin, a brother-in-law, Lester Tallman, Cedar Rapids, 6 Grandchildren, 7 great-Grandchildren, 1 great-great-Grandson, and her constant companion, Lady. She was preceded in death by her Parents, her husband, Virgil, 2 sons, Marvin and Melvin and a sister, Mildred. MargareT Lewis was born March 18, 1914 in Linn County, Iowa near Anamosa. She was the daughter of Ward and Jessie Maxwell, Lewis. Margaret graduated from the Morley Community Schools in 1931. Margaret Lewis and Virgil E. Tallman were married July 3, 1931 at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, Iowa. The couple farmed in the Morley area where they purchased a farm in 1947. They retired from active farming in the mid 1970's. Margaret was also employed at the Anamosa Community Hospital for many years. Margaret was a member of the Jones County Historical Society, and a volunteer at Edinburgh days. She had also assisted in the Pioneer Cemetery Restoration.
She was buried in 2002 in Green Center Cemetery, Morley, Jones Co., IA, Findagrave #55912319.

Beverly J. Tallman, 81, of Olin, passed away Sunday, October 27, 2019, at the Clarence Nursing Home in Clarence.
Visitation will be 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 30, at Fry Funeral Home in Tipton. Memorials may be made to St. John Lutheran Church, Olin, or Olin Ambulance Service, in her memory.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, October 31, at St. John Lutheran Church in Olin. Burial will be in the Olin Cemetery, Olin, Iowa.
Beverly June Voss was born on June 15, 1938, in Cedar County, the daughter of Leonard and Helen (Ketelsen) Voss. She was raised in Cedar County and graduated from the Tipton High School in 1956. She worked various jobs in Tipton to include Crispin’s Maid-Rite for four years and at the Cedar County Conservation office. She graduated from Paris Beauty Academy in Cedar Rapids in 1957, and became employed as a beautician at the Roosevelt Hotel in Cedar Rapids. She then moved to Mechanicsville and then to Olin, where she opened her own beauty shop for 46 years. She married James Richard Tallman on September 4, 1960, at Tipton Lutheran Church in Tipton.
Surviving are one daughter, Brenda (Mark) Lehrman of Olin; one son, Brian (Karina) Tallman of Stavanger, Norway; three grandchildren, Nick and Eli Lehrman and Jonah Tallman; and two sisters, Kathy (Steve) Pasker of Swisher and Mary Ann (John) Esbeck of Tipton.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
