Samuel H. Miller was born in 1835 in Sharpsburg, Washington Co., MD.1 He married Margaret Hart, daughter of John Hart and Susan Kretzer, on 27 February 1879, Ceremony by Rev. A. C. Geary.1 Samuel H. Miller died on 2 May 1906 in Washington Co., MD,

"Mr. Miller attended the public schools in Sharpsburg until 17 years of age; declined his father's wishes to go to college and began working on the farm and on the turnpike, where his father had a contract. He also made a section of the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal and was one of the charter members of the Boonsboro & Sharpsburg Turnpike Co. Also engaged in farming and in running boats on the canal. In 1864 he went westward and spent two years in Illinois and Iowa and came home, spending a year there; then emigrated to California on the first train that crossed the plains. On that trip he saw the golden spike that was driven into a sleeper at the junction of the roads, May 12, 1868. The train was 13 days in crossing the plains. In Yolo Co., Cal., he took up 400 acres of land covered with timber. Later he sold this tract and moved onward to the plains of Colusa Co. where he rented 600 acres on which he remained for two years, at the end of that time he returned home and purchased the 'Springdale' farm of 236 acres where he afterward resided." -- Williams' History, Washington Co., Md.1
