OBITUARY - The Kalona News, July 5, 2011:
Olive L. Shalla, 93, of Washington, died Monday, July 4, 2011 at Halcyon House in Washington following a lengthy illness. Celebration of life services will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, July 10, 2011 at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home with Rev. Herb Yoder officiating. A vigil service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in the chapel at Halcyon House with the family receiving friends following the vigil. The family will continue receiving friends during visitation from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Saturday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Memorials have been established to an activities fund at Halcyon House and PAWS and More Animal Shelter. Online condolences may be sent for Olive’s family through the web at www.jonesfh.com.
Olive was born September 3, 1917 in Smithfield, Illinois the daughter of Edward and Edna (David) Clanin. She graduated from Cuba High School in Cuba, Illinois. Olive was united in marriage to Dwane J. Shalla on December 19, 1936 in Peoria, Illinois. She was a homemaker and was involved with her husband in their farming operation. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Washington, H.J. Club, and the Order of the Eastern Star. Olive was a mother advisor for the Rainbow Girls for many years. She enjoyed gardening, mushrooming, fishing, the outdoors, cooking, quilting and sewing.
Olive is survived by her son, Larry Shalla of Washington; three granddaughters, Laurie Shalla of Redondo Beach, California; Beth Stuck and husband Steve of Des Moines; Pam Newman and husband Don of Riverside, Iowa; and two great grandchildren, Meghan and Sarah Newman.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dwane in 1999; one daughter, Lana Kay in 1948; her daughter-in-law, Barbara Shalla in 2008; and five brothers and one sister.
She was buried in July 2011 in Elm Grove Cemetery, Washington, Washington Co., IA.
