This Jacob Swigart, born in Greene County in 1826, was surely a grandson of the immigrant Peter Schweigert, but his parents can not be proven with documentary evidence. Of the five sons of Peter Schweigert, Michael, Jacob, and Peter Jr. can be eliminated based on documented facts regarding their children and locations (see Sandra Corricello's analysis below). Henry was a lifelong bachelor as far as can be determined, and no evidence has been found suggesting he ever had a child. This leaves John Swigart as the likely father of Jacob, and indeed a son, listed by age range only in the 1830 census, has not previously been identifed by name. Thus, I am placing Jacob Swigart in the family of John and Mary (Krise/Kreise) Swigart. DLB 2022.

"re the parentage of Jacob Swigart (1825 to 1905-1910).

There is no Greene County birth record for Jacob. The first public record was his marriage record. He married Julia Ann Bubb [Bubp] on 23 Aug 1849 in Greene County. Per the 1850 census they were living on a farm in Wayne Township, Montgomery County. His six children are as listed in Land of the Buckeye.

There is no mention in the records of Jacob’s son Henry V. Swigart (my ggrandfather) or in any public records that I have searched which makes mention of his parentage. As you say in your website, surely he must be a grandson of our progenitor, Peter Swigart. So far as I have been able to determine, the only male Swigarts living in Greene County at the time of Jacob’s birth were Peter and his sons. Peter’s wife was past her child-bearing years by that time. So Jacob could not have been a sixth son of Peter. That leaves Michael, Jacob, Henry, John or Peter, Jr.

I ruled out Michael because his family appears to be the most well researched of any of Peter’s sons, and Jacob’s date of birth does not fit in with the birthdates of Michael’s other children.

I ruled out Jacob because he moved his family to Indiana where they appear in the 1830 census. From that and other Indiana records, it can be determined that Jacob was not with them.

Peter, Jr. sold his Greene County land in about 1842 and moved to Indiana, and Jacob was not with that family either.

Early in my research, I believed that Henry may have been married, fathered Jacob, became a widower and raised Jacob with the help of family members such as his sister, Susanna Engle. Based upon the absence of any records to support this and an article in the Bellbrook Moon, I think it is more likely that he did not. It appears that Henry never married and lived and died in the home of his sister, Susannah Engle.

After recent review and consideration, I have come to the conclusion that Jacob must have been John’s son. He fits in well between John Swigart, Jr. (1823) and the twins, Abraham and Isaac (1828). Further, in the 1830 census John has 3 boys under the age of 5 in his family. Jacob fits right in!

I didn’t find John Swigart in the 1840 census for Beaver Creek. There was a John B. Swigart in Sugar Creek township, but there were no males in the family of the ages of Abraham, Isaac or Jacob who should have been listed in the 10 to 14 age category. Other ages ranges of the members of the family do not match up with John and Mary’s family either.

Why did Jacob never get listed with the rest of the family? One reason may be that researchers such as myself could not find a birth record. [For that matter, none of John and Mary’s children have an official birth record.] The names and dates of birth of the other children came from other sources such as Find A Grave, family trees of their descendants, or post-1840 census records. Jacob lived most of his adult life in Auglaize County where his wife’s family lived, and his history was recorded there rather than in Greene County."
