"Worshipful William Edmundson Gill Jr., 73, of Decatur, Ga., passed away on Tuesday, May 17, 2011.
He was born on December 20, 1937, in Christiansburg, Va., to the late William E. Gill Sr. and Pauline Keith Gill.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Patsy Hodges Gill.
He graduated from Christiansburg High School and served his country in the United States Army. He attended VPI and VCU and was a self-employed accountant. He was especially proud of being a Mason. Brother Bill was initiated an Entered Apprentice on May 11, 1959, passed to the Degree of Fellowcraft on October 5, 1959, and raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason on October 19, 1959. He was a 50 year Mason and Past Master of Northside Lodge No: 292 in Richmond, Va., a member of Virginia Research Lodge No: 1777 and was a charter member of Civil War Research Lodge No: 1865 in Highland Springs, Va. He was a member of Washington Royal Arch Chapter No: 9 and Richmond Commandery No: 2 in Richmond, Va.
He is survived by his children, Mary Rachel Gill and husband, Jeremy B. Zamora, of Atlanta, Ga., and William E. Gill III, of Chicago, Ill.; grandson, London Macallan Zamora, of Georgia; sister, Kathryn G. Nester, of Arizona; niece, Elizabeth M. Boose, of New Jersey; and cousins, James M. Gill, of Connecticut, and Samuel H. Gill, of Virginia.
Memorials may be made to the Masonic Home of Virginia, 4101 Nine Mile Road, Richmond, VA 23223-4999.
A Graveside Service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 21, 2011, from the graveside of Sunset Cemetery, Christiansburg, Va., officiated by Dr. Don Makin officiating and Masonic Rites performed by McDaniels Lodge No: 86. "A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, June 16, at Nelsen Funeral Home & Crematory, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., Richmond, Va., for Patsy Jeanette Hodges Gill, 61, of Flowery Branch, Ga. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour before and one hour after the service.
Born in Richmond, Va., she was the daughter of John F. Sr. and Mildred Jeanette Allen Hodges. She graduated valedictorian of her class from New Kent High School, New Kent, Va. She graduated from Ferrum Junior College; graduated with her Bachelors in education from Longwood College, and received her Masters of Education from VCU in Richmond, Va.
She retired after 31 years as a fourth grade teacher with George Baker Elementary School in Henrico County, Va. She worked for nine years after retirement with Home Depot.
Her father John F. Hodges, Senior, and her brother John F. Hodges, Junior, preceded her in death. Survivors include her husband of 37 years William E. Gill, Junior, of Flowery Branch, GA.; daughter Mary Rachel Gill of Decatur, GA., son William E. Gill III of Chicago, Illinois; mother Mildred J. Hodges of Barhamsville, Virginia; sisters Barbara Sturtz of Shackleford, Virginia, Ruby Martin of Pittsfield, Virginia, and Gloria Richardson of Barhamsville, Virginia, and other relatives and friends."
She was buried in June 2008 in Sunset Cemetery, Christiansburg, Montgomery Co., VA.
