Biography

Sgt. Marshall Pershing Dellinger was born on 27 September 1920 in Shenandoah Co., VA.1 He died on 3 March 1945 in Belgium

Obituary (findagrave.com):

Beloved son of Mantonia and Gertie Selena nee: Mumaw Dellinger.

Marshall served in the United States Army Air Corps in Europe during World War II attaining the rank of Sergeant in the 92nd Bomb Group 'H', flying in the rugged B-17 Flying Fortress, one of the more than 16,000 B-17s produced throughout the war.

It has to be noted here that Marshall seemingly was named after two great World War I American Army generals, just as prior generations named their sons after our early presidents, as there is seemingly no visible trace of his names being handed down from his direct ancestors.

On 3Mar1945 he and the rest of his crew along with many other B-17s were assigned Mission # 272, their primary target was the oil complex at Ruhland, Germany, and the secondary target of the railroad yard at Chemnitz, Germany. During the raid only 2 aircraft were lost.

On page 9 of the '92nd B-17 Aircraft Roster', of the '92nd USAAF - USAF Memorial Association', www.92ndma.org, are listed only 2 B-17 aircraft lost that day:

Production # B-17G-95-BO,

Serial # 43-38675,

name: Winnie B,

squadron code: UX-N,

gained from: Grenier,

date received: 1oct1944,

status: Crash 3mar1945 Belgium,

disposition: midair with 44-6584 / 2ndLt Heuther,

off inventory refence: salvaged 9Mar45;

and

Production # B-17G-55-DL,

Serial # 44-6584,

name: -unknown-,

squadron code: UX-O,

gained from: Grenier,

date received: 9feb1945,

status: Crash 3mar1945 Belgium,

disposition: midair with 43-38675 / Lt Schmidt,

off inventory refence: no notation (presumed salvaged 9Mar45).

Here it has to be noted that the standard crew for B-17 aircraft is 10 men. So in this one incident 20 of America's brave young men lost their lives fighting for freedom and democracy for the citizens of the european nations embroiled in this global conflict, and one of those fine young men was Sergeant Marshall Pershing Dellinger.

He was buried in 1945 in Christ Reformed Church Cemetery, Conicville, Shenandoah Co., VA, Find A Grave Memorial# 20571919.
