VELMA JOHNSTON
MELBOURNE BEACH--Velma Irene Johnston, 94, a homemaker, died Friday, June 2, at home.
Mrs. Johnston was born in Lisbon, Iowa. She came to Brevard County in 1978 from Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
She was a member of Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Melbourne.
Survivors include her sons, Robert Johnston of Melbourne Beach, Donald Johnston of San Diego and Dale Johnston of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
No calling hours are scheduled. Services will be 3 p.m. Monday at Lutheran Church of the Redeemer.
Burial will be in Sisley Grove Cemetery in Linn, Iowa. Brownlie and Maxwell Funeral Home in Melbourne is in charge of arrangements.
Donations may be made to Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 12 E. Avenue A, Melbourne, FL 32901 or to your favorite charity.

Edward Benner Johnston, 77, of 707 Third ave. N, Mt. Vernon, retired farmer, died in a Cedar Rapids hospital Saturday. Born Jan. 29, 1882, in Cedar Rapids, he was married to Velma Kohl, July 9, 1933. He moved to Mt. Vernon from Cedar Rapids 11 years ago.
Surviving are his wife, 3 sons, 2 at Mt. Vernon, Robert and Dale, and Donald, in California.
Mr. Johnston was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran church, Mt. Vernon.
Services: Beatty-Beurle's at 1:30 Tuesday by the Rev. Edgar Senne. Burial: Sisley Grove, 8 miles west of Cedar Rapids on 30. Friends may call at the chapel after 6 pm today.

JOHNSTON, DONALD PAUL Donald was born April 16, 1936, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A beloved son to Edward and Velma Johnston. He went home to the Lord on July 31, 2008, at age 72. He died peacefully at home surrounded by his wife and children. Don left Iowa at 17 to serve four years in the U.S. Navy. He went on to work for 35 years in the automotive parts industry. Donald was married to his wife Beverly for 53 years. Together they raised three children. He was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and great-grandfather. Survivors are Beverly, his wife, their children, Jeannie Tiner (Steve), Sherrie Roman-ski (Wayne), Edward Johnston (Lisa); his brother Robert Johnston of Florida, and his grandchildren, one great-grandchild and nine nieces and nephews. He was a great role model, he taught them to honor, love, pride in hard work and the power of family. He spent many years coaching for his children. The Family suggests donations made in his honor to San Diego Kaiser Hospice. We will love and miss you forever!

Dale graduated to his higher good Wednesday at Mercy Hospital, Cedar Rapids.
Born Dale William Johnston on June 10, 1938, to Edward and Velma Johnston in Fairfax, Dale grew up in Mount Vernon and graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1956. After high school he served time in the Navy and then attended Ames School of Surveying. He also attended the University of Iowa. From there he went on to work at Rockwell Collins for 38 1/2 years, retiring in 1998.
Dale was a proud member of Mount Herman Lodge No. 263, Scottish Rites 320, El Kahir Shrine Temple and Cedar Rapids Elks Lodge No. 251, where he was recently named Elk of the Year for 2000. He loved to bowl with his good friends from the Elks. He cheered the Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs and loved to travel all over the world. Reading good books was another of his favorite pastimes, "Harry Potter" being his latest.
After a six month battle with glioblastoma, Dale left with love in his heart for his wife Betty; daughters; grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and his precious little cats, Spanky, Toby and Marbles.
Dale, of 350 Red Fox RD. SE was very proud of his Scottish heritage and his Linn Co. early settler relatives.
He is also survived by two older brothers, Bob of Florida and Don (Beverly) of California; along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in crossing by his parents, Edward and Velma Johnston.
Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. today at Stewart Funeral Home by the Rev. Thelma Hembroff of Unity Center of Cedar Rapids, Wayne Bryant of Mount Herman Lodge and Bill Utt of the Elk's Club.

Betty Louise was joyfully welcomed into the world on May 15, 1941 by Cora and Carl Jessen of Clinton, Iowa. She married Donald Petersen and together they had 4 children; Virginia Petersen (Charles), Carlena Minor (James), Tom Petersen (Tammy) and Barbara Chermak (John). They divorced and she married Dale Johnston on June 28, 1985. They traveled the world together and had many exciting and unique adventures. Betty loved nature, had a remarkable zest for life and a continuing love of learning new things. She was, among many other things, an accomplished gardener and an award winning photographer.
Betty was gently called home to be with our Lord on January 31, 2010. She was preceded in death by her husband, infant sister, brother and parents. She will always be missed by those who had the good fortune to know her. Memorial Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, February 5, 2010, at the Knox Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids. Memorial donations can be made in her memory to Wickiup Hill Outdoor Learning Center.

Earl R. Kohl, 72, of 1625 J. Ave. NE, a resident of Cedar Rapids the past 67 years, died Saturday morning at a local hospital following a long illness.
Born May 30, 1905, at Lisbon, he was married to the former Evelyn Smith on June 22, 1928, at Cedar Rapids. Mr. Kohl was employed by the Quaker Oats Company for 35 years before his retirement in 1970. For the past 16 years he also had been employed by the Beatty-Beurle-Murdoch Funeral Home. He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Richard L. and Robert E., both of Cedar Rapids; a daughter, Diane Smith of Cedar Rapids; a niece, Lynda A. Smith of Cedar Rapids, who was raised by Mr. and Mrs. Kohl; a sister, Mrs. E. B. Johnston, Cedar Rapids; and 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services: 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Beatty-Beurle-Murdoch Chapel by the Rev. Max I. Hall of Faith United Methodist Church. Burial: Cedar Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m. Monday. The casket will not be opened after the service. Friends may, if they wish, donate to the Faith United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.

Evelyn Kohl, 99, of 910 H Avenue NW, died at Mercy Medical Center, Sunday, August 13, 2006, after a long illness. Services: 1 p.m. Thursday at Turner West Funeral Home by the Rev. Randy Richter of Hillside Wesleyan Church. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and after 12 p.m. Thursday.
Survivors include her daughter Diane Smith of Cedar Rapids, with whom she lived for over 20 years; 2 sons, Richard and Robert Kohl, both of Cedar Rapids; and a special niece, Kirah SuRayne of Marion.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband and four brothers, Carlton, Leland, Amos, and Albert.
Evelyn was born December 8, 1906 in Cedar Rapids to Albert and Carrie Smith. She married Earl Kohl there on June 22, 1928. He died in 1978. She was very active at St. Andrews EUB Church where she played the organ, taught Sunday School and served as Superintendant. She was recently a member of Hillside Wesleyan Church. Evelyn loved to travel and had been to all states except two and took photographs of the places she visited. She also loved to make crafts.

Richard “Dick” Leroy Kohl passed away on Thursday, August 31, 2017, at the Iowa Veteran’s Home in Marshalltown, Iowa.
Memorial Service: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 5, 2017, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Inurnment: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with Military Rites.
He is survived by his sister, Diane Smith of Cedar Rapids; children, Jacqueline (Gerald) Creger of Miles, Iowa, Ronald (Darla) Kohl of San Antonio, Texas and David (Holly) Kohl of Jacksonville, Florida; ten grandchildren; and twenty great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Robert Kohl.
Dick was born to Earl and Evelyn (Smith) Kohl on July 14, 1929. He was a lifelong sports fan. Dick started playing little league baseball in 1938, for the Waltonians. He played on the varsity baseball team at McKinley High School in Cedar Rapids. Dick also played AAU basketball after graduation from McKinley in 1947. He attended the University of Iowa from 1948-1949.
Dick married Madonna Jean Meyer in September of 1950.
and he was drafted into the United States Army in 1951. He served in the Korean War as a forward observer.
Dick was employed with Iowa Illinois Gas and Electric for 40 years.
He enjoyed spending time with his family boating on the Mississippi River.
In April 2009, Dick moved to the Iowa Veteran’s Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. His family is very grateful for the care that he received at the facility.
Memorials will go towards the Veteran’s Home in Marshalltown.

Robert was born Jan. 4, 1932, in Cedar Rapids,
Iowa, son of Earl and Evelyn (Smith) Kohl. He worked as a police officer for 27 years for the Cedar Rapids Police Department and also at Rockwell Collins for 10 years. Robert served in the United States Navy from 1951-1954 during the Korean conflict. Robert married Beverly McClain in Cedar Rapids on July 25, 1964. He enjoyed fishing and activities with his children and grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
