Touched a Live Wire
A.E. Shaffer, Manager of Electric Light Plant
Electrocuted Saturday morning Arm and Fingers Burned to a Crisp Victim of Short Circuit
A.E. Shaffer was killed about six o’clock last Sat morning near his home at Arcadia by coming in contact with a live electric wire. Mr. Shaffer was manager of the Arcadia Electric Light Plant and one of his duties was to turn off the lights in the morning. He had placed a switch on an electric light pole near his home for this purpose to save himself the trouble of walking several squares to the electric station. The switch had been placed on the pole out of the reach of the public, and it was necessary to use a stepladder to reach it. A metal lever was used on the switch and several times had Mr. Shaffer been advised to replace it with one of rubber, but he had not done so. Saturday morning Mr. Shaffer mounted the ladder to turn off the lights. It is supposed that just as he took hold of the lever the ladder slipped and that in order to save himself from a fall, he grabbed hold of the wire on the pole This made a short circuit and the entire electric current passed through his body. John Martin, a resident of Arcadia, was an eye witness of the affair, and says that fire and sparks flew from Shaffer's face and hands as soon as he touched the wire. The body fell to the ground instantly and life was extinct in a few moments despite the efforts of a physician who was called. Three fingers and the thumb on the right hand were burned to a crisp and the left arm was badly burned clear to the elbow; his face was also badly burned.
The deceased was 32 years old, the son of George Shaffer, a well known citizen of Arcadia, and is survived by a wife and one child.
Funeral was held at the M.E. church MOnday afternoon at two with interment in the Dunkard grave yard east of Arcadia.
Obituary -- (Findagrave.com):
The unexpected has come to pass. A fellow citizen, honored and respected, departs into the shadows. The abruptness of his going has startled the entire community. In a moment, without forewarning, our friend and brother embarks on the River Death. We stand on the shore, bordering the eternities, and with shaded eyes we scan the horizon, but our vision is obscured by rising mists coming from the great deep of our soul. We cry, but our voice is but an empty echo. We stand in the shadows and wait, and listen and wonder, and try to understand our brother's going. He seems not to know our anxiety. The clouds deepen the lightnings flash, the thunders roar, the night approaches, fear possesses us, the foundations of life, seem crumbling away, the pillars of the soul sway to and fro when we feel the crawl and crush of shattered hope stealing upon us, then out of the encircling gloom a voice,s oft and gentle as the breath of spring speaks! He speaks and we are reassured and comforted, and this is the message: "Let not your heart be troubled. Ye believe in God, believe also in me, In my Father's house are many mansions, if it were not so I would have told you I go to prepare a place for you. I will come again and receive you."
The subject of this sketch Arvia Everett Shaffer, was born August 8, 1881 died June 19, 1909, aged 27 years, 10 months, and 16 days.
He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Shaffer, being the fourth child of seven children. Three brothers preceded him in death. He was married to Alta Hartzog,
Sept 4, 1904. To this union was born one child, Little Edna May. About the year 1902, he connected himself with the Evangelical Lutheran church, and about one year ago he united with the Arcadia Methodist church. His life was consistent. He was an agreeable spirit, and he belonged to that class of men whose vision was broad as the world. He believed life was worth while and that days were God's gift to man and not to be spent and wasted, but to be used in making the world better and happier. He adjusted himself to the tasks of life in such manner as made the routine daily toil to become pleasure ground. At the time of his death, he was a member of the Arcadia I.O.O.F. also the Arcadia Band. He taught the young men's class in the Methodist Episcopal Sunday School.
His death leaves a home circle broken, his wife, child, and mother in-law will feel the loss most keenly for to them and their happiness he was devoted, a father, mother, two brothers, one sister together with friends and relatives will mourn his loss.
The funeral conducted by Rev. A.D. Alexander assisted by Rev Godwin and Shank was held at the Methodist Episopal church Monday June 21. The funeral was attended by one thousand of his neighbors and friends.
Interment in the Dunkard Cemetery.
Card of Thanks
I desire to thank the many kind friends, neighbors, and I.O.O.F. for their assistance and sympathy during funeral and burial of my husband.
Mrs. A.E. Shaffer.

Lloyd C. Lieurance
Lloyd Lieurance first came to Wells County with his parents, brother and sister. He attended high school and graduated from Roll in Blackford County because Jackson Township had no high school at that time.
After high school he graduated from Muncie Normal College now Ball State University. He wrote the only history of that school and it is still in the Ball State Library.
During his college years, his parents deeded a small parcel of land to him in Jackson Township. Over the years he added to that land to make a total of four hundred acres.
Lloyd eventually remodeled the 1863 vintage house in 1938 giving it lights, furnace and a basement. He built a dairy barn in 1950. He always called the farm home but he only lived there intermittently until 1949 when he remodeled it again making it his permanent residence.
After college, he taught in Hamilton County and then became principal of what is now Hamilton Heights School. It was at this time he married Edna Shaffer of Arcadia, Indiana.
After obtaining his superintendents license from Indiana University, he ran for County Superintendent of the schools in Wells County. However, soon after he was sent to Europe to serve in World War II. Toward the end of the war, Captain Lieurance started a school for the American servicemen in Berlin, Germany. On the twentieth anniversary of that same school it had served more than ninety thousand servicemen and is now affiliated with the University of Maryland.
After the service, he returned to Wells County to become Superintendent again. Since there was nine schools in his district, his hobby of flying was beneficial, he used a makeshift landing strip in the field behind the house and landed in nearby fields at each school.
Lloyd C. Lieurance felt his greatest reward was in starting the Vera Cruz Opportunity School. Since the school was not state funded, he spoke before clubs and organizations to raise the funds necessary to start the school. He and several other greatly dedicated individuals worked to accomplish what was considered the impossible at that time.
Lloyd C. Lieurance later retired from the Army as Major. Edna Lieurance died in 1974, Lloyd followed her in 1985. His home is still occupied by his daughter Jane Lieurance, an interior decorator in Hartford City. David Lieurance, the youngest son, along with his family still farms the land. The oldest son, Major Robert J. Lieurance is retired from the Air Force and resides in California. Mrs. Marianna Mounsey, the eldest daughter, of Fort Wayne, is actively involved in the family owned M and R Truck Sales Incorporated of Fort Wayne.
