Mrs. Helen Elizabeth Shaum, 60, wife of Francis E. Shaum, died unexpectedly Sunday, November 13, 1955, at her home, Middle Street, Taneytown. She had been in her usual health when she was stricken at her home. Mrs. Shaum was a daughter of the late William H. and Mary E. Staley Wisotzkey of Littlestown. She resided in Littlestown until her marriage. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Taneytown, and the Blessed Virgin Mary Sodality. Surviving are her husband and four children, the Rev. David W. Shaum, Mt. St. Mary's College, Emmitsburg; Mrs. Nick Donatelli, Diller Road, Hanover; Francis E. Shaum Jr., at home; Joseph B. Shaum, Taneytown; one grandchild and two brothers, Mark Wisotzkey, Littlestown, and Harry Wisotzkey, Gettysburg.- Carroll County Times 17 Nov 1955.

Edward S. Popiel, 87, formerly of Chester, a self-employed businessman and veteran of World War II, died Jan. 16 at Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Upland.

Born, reared and educated at Chester, Mr. Popiel resided in the city his entire life before moving to the Folsom section of Ridley Township three years ago.

He served four years in the Army with a commando unit known as Merrill's Maurauders in the Burma Campaign during World War II.

Mr. Popiel was a self-employed businessman who owned and operated several enterprises in Chester. He was a longtime member of St. Hedwig's Catholic Church.

Mr. Popiel was the son of the late Albert and Mary Bojas Popiel. He was the widower of Martha Orlowski Popiel, who died in 2001. He was the brother of the late Joseph Popiel.

Survivors: Daughters, Martha Shaum of College Station, Texas, Eleanor Barton of Midland Park, N.J., and Susan Larson of McLean, Va.; sister, Stephanie Perrin of Glenolden; three grandchildren.

Mass: 10 a.m. Monday, St. Hedwig's Catholic Church, Fourth and Hayes streets, Chester.
