BLOOMINGTON, Ind., Jan. 8 -- Joseph H. Allen, 76 years old, retired business man formerly of Bloomington, died at his home in San Digeo (sic), Cal., today, according to word received by relatives.

Surviving are the widow, two daughters, Miss Oneta (sic) Allen and Mrs. Clarence Minor of San Diego, and two sons, Harry Allen of San Diego and Walter W. Allen, local funeral director. The latter was en route to San Diego when his father died.

Mr. Allen and his father, Capt. W. J. Allen, conducted a hardware store here for several years.

FORMER LOCAL WOMAN DIES IN INDIANAPOLIS

Mrs. Emma Martin Stricken Early Today.

Mrs. Emma Jane Martin of this city, who lived until recently at 323 east 6th street, died this morning at 2 o'clock in Indianapolis at the home of her nephew, J. B. H. Martin, 3901 north Delaware street. Mrs. Martin went to Indianapolis in January, 1934, for a visit, but was stricken suddenly and was never able to return to Bloomington. She was 78 years old.

Survivors, in addition to the nephew at whose home she died, include a son, Carl B. Martin of Indianapolis, a niece, Mrs. H. A. Bordner of the Philippine Islands, and two other nephews, U. H. Smith of Bloomington and P. B. Smith of Denver, Colo.

Mrs. Martin was the youngest daughter of James and Dorothy Blankenship and was the last surviving member of that family. Four sister [sic] have preceded her in death, Mrs. Sallie Smith, Miss Mary Blankenship, Mrs. Lida Martin and Mrs. Martha Smith. In 1883 she was married to A. L. Martin, who died February 2, 1901 at the age of 42 years. To this union two children were born, Sybil, a daughter who died early in childhood and Carl, who survives.

The funeral party will arrive in Bloomington Wednesday morning and will go to the residence of Mr. and Mrs. William Etter, 415 east 6th street, where friends may call. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 Thursday afternoon at the Lincoln Street Church of Christ, of which Mrs. Martin was a member. Elders A. W. Harvey and W. J. Whaley will officiate.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Rodney Smith, W. O. Blakely, O. H. Cravens, Arthur Cravens, William Graham, C. A. Martin, A. G. Lloyd and E. E. Speer. Active pallbearers will be H. G. Harris, Noble Koontz, William Etter, Ben Morris, H. D. Rott and R. B. Stull. The body will lie in state at the church from 1:30 to 2:30 Thursday. Burial will be in the Rosehill cemetery.

WILLIAM J. ALLEN, only son of John W. and Fannie J. (Clark) Allen, was born September 8, 1836, in Putnam County, Ind. He was reared on a farm in Perry Township, Monroe County, Ind., whither he came with his parents when but three months old. In September, 1850, he entered the State University, and remained until the death of his father September 8, 1852. In April, 1853, he came to Bloomington with his mother, and entered the employ of W.O. Fee, a dry goods merchant, with whom he remained for nearly a year. March 13, 1854, he went to California, where he mined until the spring of 1857, when he returned to Bloomington. Removing thence to Iowa, he remained a short time.

In September, 1857, he was married to Harriet L. Swearingen, daughter of Charles and Harriet Swearingen, residents of Monroe County. They had three children - John C., Fannie C. and Joseph H. His wife died on November 1865, and in July following he was married to Eliza J. Allen, daughter of Robert N, and Elizabeth Allen, of Greencastle, Ind. The have six children - Robert N., Eliza L., Mary M., William D., Eva O. and Arthur G.

He farmed after his first marriage until the war broke out in 1862, and then enlisted in Company A, Fifty-fourth Indiana Light Artillery, serving for three years, taking part in the battles at Atlanta, Jonesboro and Nashville, and on July 5, 1865, received an honorable discharge. Returning to Bloomington, he he(sic) was engaged in the stove and tinware business with M.E. Benegar, afterwards with Samuel Osborn, until 1870, when he purchased the whole stock, and at present does a lucrative business in stoves, tin and hardware, also agricultural implements, and all kinds of building material. Mr. Allen is a member of the United Presbyterian Church, and politically he is a Republican.

Former Resident Dies In California

Masonic services for C. A. "Bud" Minor, 55, former Angola resident, were held Saturday, March 2, in San Diego, California. Mr. Minor's death occurred Tuesday, February 26, in a Seattle, Washington, hospital, where he suffered a recurrence of an abdominal ailment while in Seattle on a business trip.

The Minor's have many friends in the Angola area, where they made their home for several years. Mr. Minor was district sales representative for Standard Oil Company, and Mrs. Minor taught in the Steuben county schools. The family lived first on East Broad street, later moving to Lake James. They have visited occasionally since leaving to make their home in California.

Surviving are the wife, Ruby; a daughter Mrs. Janet Huebsch, of San Bruno, California; two sons, John (Jack) of Las Vegas, and Robert, of San Diego, three grandchildren, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Mino, a sister and an aunt, all of San Diego.

At the time of his death, Mr. Minor was sales manager for Angelus Trailer Manufacturing Company of El Monte, California. He had formerly been in the mobile home business in San Diego, moving from there to Azusa three years ago.

Born in Illinois, Mr. Minor attended Indiana University and was graduated from Purdue University. While at I.U. he played trumpet with the Hoagy Carmichael and Dick Powell bands. Later, on returning to California, he joined the San Diego symphony orchestra under the direction of Nino Marcelli.

Mr. Minor was Potentate of Al Bahr Shrine in San Diego in 1957. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Angola; San Diego Scottish Rite Bodies, San Diego Commandery, Knights Templar; Royal Arch Masons, San Gabriel Valley Shrine Club, and the Wesley Methodist church. From 1957 to 1960 he was a member of the board of governors of the Shriner's Crippled Children's Hospital at Los Angeles. He also played bugle in the Al Bahr Temple Drum and Bugle Corps, of which he was a past president.

La Mesa Masonic Lodge was in charge of the services, which were followed by cremation.



He was buried in 1963 in Greenwood Memorial Park, San Diego, San Diego Co., CA, Findagrave #197340051, cremated.

William J. Burch, 82, died at noon today at Donna Nursing Home in Gosport, after a severe illness during the last month.

He had suffered a stroke 15 months ago and was taken to the nursing home.

Surviving are sons Clyde, Claude and William Burch of Bloomington, Robert of Chicago, and James of Indianapolis; a daughter Mrs. Hazel Minor, Bloomington, and Mrs. Orville Westmorland, Jackson, Ill.

Services will be 2:30 p.m. Monday at Greene and Harrell Funeral Home, where friends may call after 1 p.m. Sunday.

Mr. Burch was a retired carpenter and contractor.

Funeral services for William J. Burch, 82, of Bloomington, who died Saturday at the Donna Nursing Home in Gosport, were conducted at 2:3[0] p.m. today.

Rev. Arthur Miller officiated in the Greene and Harrell Funeral Home, and burial was in Clear Creek Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Phillip, James, and Richard Burch, William Minor, Jess Carmichael, and Wendell Baxter.

Mr. Burch, a retired carpenter and contractor, is survived by five sons, Clyde and William Burch, of Bloomington; Claude, of Nashville, Robert, of Chicago, and James, of Indianapolis; two daughters, Mrs. Hazel Minor, Bloomington, and Mrs. Orville Westmorland, Jacksonville, Ill.; 10 grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren

A brother, Ray Burch, of Indianapolis, and three sisters--Mrs. Ella Crum, Evansville; Mrs. Ethel Carter, Stanford, and Clara Burch, Bloomington -- also survive.

Mrs. Maude Z. Burch, 91, formerly of 612 S. Park, died this morning at the Arbutus Rest Home.

A native of Monroe County, she was born Nov. 3, 1879, the daughter of James and Dora Eller, and was the widow of William J. Burch, who died in 1958 [sic]. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Just-Around-the-Corner Club.

Survivors are five sons, William, Clyde, and Robert, all of Bloomington, Claude of Nashville, and James Indianapolis; two daughters, Mrs. Hazel Minor of Bloomington, and Mrs. Nell Westmoreland of Jacksonville, Ill.; four brothers, Russell and Willie Eller, both of Solsberry, George Eller of Bloomington, and Kenneth Eller, of Bloomfield; 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Allen Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. A. E. Lacy officiating. Burial will follow in Clear Creek Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 7-9 p.m. today and until time for the service on Saturday.
