James Heeg a Cincinnati firefighter

He earned Purple Heart for his WWII injuries

BY SHARON MORGAN

James "Big Nick" Heeg, a second-generation Cincinnati firefighter and recipient of a Purple Heart, died of complications from a respiratory infection Saturday in Franciscan Hospital - Western Hills Campus.

The Westwood resident was 76.

"Jim was well-known and respected for his honest, pragmatic manner in his professional and personal life," said a daughter, Janie Hague of Monfort Heights.

Mr. Heeg followed in the footsteps of his father, firefighter John Frank Heeg.

In 1946, Mr. Heeg's first assignment was with old Engine 42 at 12th Street and Reading Road. He was promoted to engineer, serving the majority of his years with Engine 3 at Ninth and Broadway streets. He was responsible for driving the pumper and supplying water to firefighters.

Mr. Heeg also worked part-time as a driver and later carpet salesman for Swallen's in Western Hills. He began working full-time after he retired from firefighting in 1975.

Mr. Heeg was an avid cook whose favorite dishes included potato pancakes and sauerbraten, his daughter said.

He had a love of nature, history, classical music, crossword puzzles and geography.

"He was a great family man and left us with many happy memories," said his wife of 52 years, Ellie.

During World War II, the Navy veteran received a Purple Heart for injuries sustained during the bombing of Bari, Italy.

He also was a swimmer at Woodward Hight School and used his skills as a volunteer frogman in the military.

He also is survived by another daughter, Judi Wiling of Monfort Heights; a brother, Jack Heeg of Winton Place; and three grandchildren.

The service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in Dalbert & Woodruff Funeral Home, 2880 Boudinot Avenue in Westwood. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Entombment will be in St. Joseph (Old) Cemetery Mausoleum in Price Hill.

Memorials can be made to the Franciscan MediCenter Harrison Campus, 10450 New Haven Road, Harrison 45030.

He was buried on 14 January 1998 in Saint Joseph Cemetery, Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., OH, Findagrave #138059533.
