Biography

Pamela Sue Gulsvig-Smith was born on 2 November 1961 in Waterloo, Black Hawk Co., IA,

; daughter of Ronald Norman and Doris Mae (Casteel) Gulsvig, according to her obituary. However, Ronald (1934-1978) and Doris (Casteel) Nielson were married on 1 NOV 1965 at Fillmore Co., Minnesota, when Pam was 4 years old (Ancestry.com), which raises some uncertainty about the identity of her biological father. Her younger brother, Ronald Gerald Gulsvig, was born in 1966.

Doris' first husband was Arnold Joseph Jennings (1922-1979), a WW II Army veteran whom she married on 27 JUL 1946 at Waterloo, Iowa (Ancestry.com). They apparently divorced, and then remarried in Hall County, Nebraska on 17 FEB 1950 (Ancestry.com). They were listed on the April 1950 federal census, living at Waterloo in the home of Doris' parents, with a child, Janice, age 1, listed as a granddaughter of Gerald R. Casteel, head of the household. The second marriage to Arnold Jennings split up by 1 DEC 1951, when Doris remarried to Robert E. Nielson at Winnebago County, Illinois. Arnold Jennings relocated permanently to California in 1952, according to his newspaper obituary.

This Janice Jennings listed on the 1950 census of Waterloo appears to have been born in August, 1948, and to have marred a Hansen. She was probably the Janice Jennings mentioned in a 5 OCT 1958 article in the Waterloo The Courier, "Ribbons Presented 4-H Demonstration Teams", with residence at Chariton. She is listed in public records with addresses at Waterloo from 1991-2020, and at Des Moines and Cedar Falls in the 1970s and 1980s. Strangely, Janice was not mentioned in Arnold's 1979 newspaper obituary, nor in Pamela's 2021 newspaper obituary.

Doris' second husband was Robert Edwin Nielson (1928-1990), who she married on 1 DEC 1951. His newspaper obituary lists four children, Peter S. Nielson III (1956-2021), Terry (1952?), Denise Gill (1955?), and Kristine (Assink) Sladek (1954).

She married Todd Darrell Moline, son of Darrel Gillis Moline and Mary Ellen Palmer, in July 1991 in Black Hawk Co., IA,

; Pam was first married to Clinton Lee Smith in 1983 and had a daughter, Sara Lynne Smith, born July, 1983. A 9 MAY 1985 article in the Waterloo, Iowa The Courier, page 33, lists under "MARRIAGES DISSOLVED", Pamela S. Gulsvig Smith and Clinton L. Smith. Interestingly, an Iowa divorce record shows the date 14 NOV 1995 for the divorce from Clinton Smith, four years after the marriage to Todd Moline.

Pamela Sue Gulsvig-Smith and Todd Darrell Moline were divorced on 18 August 2005 in Black Hawk Co., IA. She died on 6 December 2021 in Waterloo, Black Hawk Co., IA,

Obituary – The Courier, Waterloo, Iowa; Sunday, 12 DEC 2023, page A9 (Newspapers.com):

Pamela S. Gulsvig Glaza

November 2, 1961 – December 6, 2021

WATERLOO — Pamela S. Gulsvig Glaza, 60, Waterloo, died Monday, December 6, 2021, at UPH Allen Hospital. She was born November 2, 1961, in Waterloo, IA, the daughter of Ronald N. and Doris M. (Casteel) Gulsvig. Pam graduated from Central High School and AIC. She married Clinton L. Smith – they had one daughter (Sara). Later, she married Todd Moline – they had three daughters (Callie, Hannah, and Lindsay). Anyone who knew Pam knew how much she cared for people and that was the foundation of her career in customer service, working at Maple Lanes, HyVee, and most recently Sedgwick as an insurance service specialist. She especially found great reward in helping her clients at Sedgwick receive the benefits they needed in their time of great need.

Pam was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church and was President of her bowling league at Maple Lanes, succeeding her Mom in that position.

She is survived by her daughters: Sara Smith, Waterloo; Callie (Mark) Paar, Cedar Falls; Hannah Moline, Waterloo; and Lindsay (Brett Kressin) Moline, Waterloo, nine grandchildren; Tyler, Kalyssa, Alexa, Brayden, Keegan, Brynley, Madelynn, Olivia, and Brett Jr.; her great-granddaughter Elayna; two brothers, Terry Nielson, New Orleans, LA, Joe (Samantha) Gulsvig, Westfield, MA; and sister, Kris Neilson, Minneapolis, MN.

Pam brought light and joy to virtually everyone who met her. She had an infectious smile that lit up, especially in her enjoyment of her family. She loved life, and her Lord Jesus Christ and was deeply devoted to her family, which she loved more than anything else on earth.

Her family directed memorial services will be at 10 am, Wednesday, December 15th at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Waterloo with interment at Fairview Cemetery, Waterloo. Memorials may be directed to the family.

NOTE: Pamela was born four years prior to her mother's marriage to Ronald Gulsvig -- he may or may not have been her biological father. Of the siblings named in the above obituary, only Ronald Gerald "Joe" Gulsvig, born 1966, might have been her full brother. The others were children of her mother and Robert Edwin Nielson (1928-1990). Not mentioned was Janice (Jennings) Hansen, daughter of her mother and Arnold Jennings, born August 1948. DLB 2024.
