John Forney, 88, of Oxford, died September 28, 2005. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, October 1 at 11:00 AM in Allen Memorial UMC in Oxford. Born in Waterloo, Iowa, he attended Manchester College and taught high school before being drafted into the Army in 1940. He served as an instructor during WWII and after the war completed a PhD in microbiology at Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA. In Los Angeles, CA, he taught at the University of Southern California and was assistant Director of the LA City Public Health Department laboratory, before moving to Atlanta, GA in 1963 to take a position as a public health laboratory consultant at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In 1967, Congress passed the Clinical Laboratories Improvement Act which required all laboratories operating in interstate commerce to have a federal license. As a part of the Federal oversight, he developed a laboratory safety program and presented over 100 laboratory safety workshops in the US and overseas. After retiring, he continued with traveling, gardening and community commitments to Allen Memorial UMC, the Oxford Historical Society, and the Oxford Historical Cemetery where he will be buried. He is survived by his wife, Martha, 3 children, 7 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson. Arrangements by Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, Covington.

She was a member of Trinity U.C.C., Hanover.

Surviving are two daughters, Starlett L. Hood and husband, Eric A., and Michelle K. Williams, both of Hanover; one sister, Shirley Mickley of Hanover; and one granddaughter and one grandson, Kaybrea S. Hood and Austin E. Hood.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Levere Forney, and ex-husband, Charles E. Williams.

Interment was in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hanover.

The service will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Kenworthy Funeral Home Inc., 269 Frederick St., Hanover. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Hanover. Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Wagner was born July 12, 1910, in Hanover. She was the daughter of the late William B. and Maggie M. (Schievert) Forney.
She was a cashier at the former Montgomery Ward Store in Hanover, retiring in 1967 after 35 years of service. She was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Hanover.
Mrs. Wagner also is survived by a brother, Beecher W. Forney of Albuquerque, N.M.
Officiating at the service will be her pastor, the Rev. Eric P. Wogen.

He was an Army veteran of World War II and served 30 years in the National Guard and Army Reserves. He was a member of Hammond Avenue Brethren Church, Waterloo, and Elks Lodge 1224, St. Petersburg.

LA VERNE -- The Rev. and Mrs. Harlan J. Brooks and daughter Margaret, will be visiting in and about La Verne until July 8, with their headquarters at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Lear, 2343 4thg St.

Mr. and Mrs. Brooks are returned missionaries from India. They served their for more than 25 years. Mrs. Brooks is a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. D. L. Forney and is a niece of Mrs. Lear.

Margaret is a graduate of North Manchester College, Ind. She will teach in Villa Park next year.

This Sunday the Brook's will speak in the Covina Church of the Brethren in the morning and at the La Verne Church of the Brethren in the evening.

MR. AND MRS> HARLAN J. BROOKS,? ? of Vyara, India, are visiting at the home of Mrs. Brooks' sister, Mrs. Virgil Kindy, Rt. 5, Box 405, Visalia. They will remain there until Thursday, Mr. and Mrs. Brooks are on a years furlough from their missionary station in India which is supported by the Church of the Brethren, They will return a year from this fall.

She died on 11 February 1989 at Herndon, Fairfax Co., VA, at age 92

BROOKS, Ruth Elizabeth (Forney (sic)), age 92, passed away at her home, 11500 Leesburg Pike, Herndon, VA, February 11, 1989. Born October 5, 1896 at Palestine, AR, She was a retired missionary in India with the church of the Brethren. She is survived by her Husband, Rev. Harlan J. Brooks; 2 daughters, Betty Jeanne Campbell, Monticello, IN and Margaret Huston of Herndon, VA; 6 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 1 sister, Lucille Cosner, Waterford, CA. Funeral services 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, February 14, 1989 at the Happy Corner Church of the Brethren with Rev. Ivan Gotscha, 7037 Union Rd., Clayton, with interment in Fairview Cemetery, Englewood. Friends may call at the church 1 hour prior to the time of? ? service. Family requests contributions be made to the Dranesville Church of the Brethren, 11500 Leesburg Pike, Herndon, VA 22070 in Mrs. Brooks memory.
