WOODBINE MAN SUICIDE; BODY FOUND IN BUSHES

Revolver by Side of Amos L. Gosnell -- Employed at Springfield Hospital

Amos L. Gosnel, a citizen of Carroll county, residing about three quarters of a mile north of Woodbine, was found dead Wednesday morning near his home with a bullet hole through his head above the temple. An old time Colt's 38-calibre revolver was lying by his side. The man evidently took his own life.

Gosnell, who was employed as a guard at the Springfield hospital, arrived at his home Tuesday morning about 9:30 o'clock and left again at 1:30 p.m., supposedly to return to his duties, his family stated. He was not seen until Wednesday morning, when his body was discovered in a secluded spot about 400 yards from his home.

Note: A headstone for an Elsie Gosnel exists at Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church Cemetery in Frederick County, Maryland. The headstone inscription indicates birth 30 JUL 1888 and death 16 DEC 1918. This was previously suspected to be the grave of the daughter of Amos and Althea Gosnell, however the birth month is inconsistent with the 1900 census. I think the Elsie Gosnell buried in Frederick County was the daughter of another Gosnell family -- I believe she was the Elsie listed on the 1900 census with her brother Roy Gosnell at Frederick, MD, with a birth date of July 1887. Her mother was Elizabeth, maiden name unknown, married for four years to her step-father John Covell. I am not able to determine who her Gosnell father was with the tools available to me at this time. DLB 2020.
