     Hope Thomas Gravely was born on 19 December 1898 at Martinsville City, Henry Co., VA. She was the daughter of Henry Clay Gravely and Ann Hope Thomas. Hope Thomas Gravely married Merrill Clifford Leibensberger, son of Oliver Leibensberger and Dorothea E. Engleman, on 25 April 1922 at Henry Co., VA. Hope Thomas Gravely lived between 1935 and 1940 at Richmond, VA.¹ She died on 31 March 1985 at Richmond, Henrico Co., VA, at age 86.

     John Thomas Gravely was born on 1 May 1849 at Leatherwood, Henry Co., VA. He was the son of Benjamin Franklin Gravely and Julia Caroline Thomas. John Thomas Gravely married Elizabeth Montgomery Stuart on 27 October 1886. John Thomas Gravely died on 26 March 1893 at Leatherwood, Henry Co., VA, at age 43.

     Julian Stuart Gravely was born on 1 September 1887 at Leatherwood, Henry Co., VA. He was the son of John Thomas Gravely and Elizabeth Montgomery Stuart. Julian Stuart Gravely married Virginia Dew. Julian Stuart Gravely died on 10 November 1947 at age 60.      Julian Stuart Gravely Jr. was born on 11 February 1913 at Pittsfield, Berkshire Co., MA. He was the son of Julian Stuart Gravely and Virginia Dew. Julian Stuart Gravely Jr. began military service on 28 April 1941 WW II service, enlisted, U.S. Navy Reserve, Lieut., served aboard USS Hope, released 15 NOV 1945. He married Jean Grosvenor Parker on 8 February 1942 at St. Johns Co., FL. Julian Stuart Gravely Jr. and Jean Grosvenor Parker were divorced in 1946 at St. Johns Co., FL; Jean remarried to Lester E. Waterbury in 1949. Julian Stuart Gravely Jr. died on 12 November 1983 at age 70. He was buried in November 1983 at East End Cemetery, Wytheville, Wythe Co., VA, Findagrave #38194569.

     Nancy Gravely was born on 28 December 1915 at Martinsville, Henry Co., VA.¹ She was the daughter of Richard Pleasants Gravely and Sarah Hay Mullins.¹ Nancy Gravely married Henry Evander Gilliam, son of Harry Edward Gilliam and Dorothy Alice Turpin, on 9 January 1943 at Martinsville, Henry Co., VA. Nancy Gravely married James Edward Shank. Nancy Gravely died on 22 February 2013 at Lynchburg, VA, at age 97 Obituary (findagrave.com):

Nancy Gravely Shank, 97, died Friday, February 22, 2013 at Westminster-Canterbury in Lynchburg.

She was born in Martinsville, on December 28, 1915, the daughter of Richard Pleasants Gravely and Sadie Mullins Gravely. She was the widow of J. Edward Shank of Goode.

Nancy graduated from Martinsville High School and Randolph-Macon Woman's College. Afterward she taught school briefly in Dalton, Georgia, and Martinsville. In 1941, she married Henry E. Gilliam, Jr. ("Van"). They lived in Norfolk during the war, afterward returning to reside in Lynchburg.

She was a member of St. John's Church, and active in the Junior League.

Through her love of laughter and big heart, "Big" managed to survive the continuous jokes of her first husband Van, and the raising of her daughter, Nancy Gravely Gilliam ("Little"), of Sagle, Idaho and even her son Henry E. Gilliam III("Harry") of Round Hill, VA. She is also survived by her stepson, Charles Shank, currently in Afghanistan, her adopted daughter Lucia Cucullu of NY, her sister Sadie Hay Hampson("Puff"0 of Franklin, MI, hers sister, Virginia Hufford ("Deeda") of Richmond, her sister Elizabeth Starling Gravely ("Betsy") of Martinsville, a surfeit of nieces and nephews, and a plethora of grand nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers: Richard, Harry, King, Frank and Robert Gravely.

After a successful stint peddling gas appliances to the unsuspecting masses for the Lynchburg Gas Company, Nancy joined her husband Van in running an employment agency in Lynchburg. After her husband's death in the early 1970's she continued running that business, Snelling & Snelling, until her retirement in the early 80's.

She was a constant lover of wildlife, especially anything even remotely resembling a bluebird. Eventually, in order to move to Westminster-Canterbury when she was 87 age was persuaded to part with her beloved cat, Sparkie, who also shared her love bluebirds.

At Westminster her kindness and constant sense of humor in the face of life's ever present challenges touched many and created many friends.

A private interment will be held at Spring Hill Cemetery. Funeral services will be held in the Chapel at Westminster-Canterbury, 501 VES Road, Lynchburg at 2pm, Tuesday, February 26, 2013.

     Paul Gravely was born in 1893. He was the son of Henry Clay Gravely and Ann Hope Thomas. Paul Gravely died in 1967.

     Reginald Whitten Gravely was born on 2 October 1919 at Henry Co., VA, Per WW II draft registration. Some public sources indicate a 1920 birth year, however Reginald is listed on the 1920 census, taken in January, and is shown as three months old. DLB 2017.¹ He was the son of Richard Pleasants Gravely and Sarah Hay Mullins.¹ Reginald Whitten Gravely began military service on 3 February 1941 at Martinsville, Henry Co., VA, WW II service, U.S. Army National Guard. He married Zella Davis Townes, daughter of Benjamin Marshall Townes and Zulah Davis, on 27 April 1946 at Martinsville, Henry Co., VA. Reginald Whitten Gravely died on 9 January 1978 at Martinsville, Henry Co., VA, at age 58.

     Richard Pleasants Gravely was born on 24 September 1886 at Virginia.¹ He was the son of Henry Clay Gravely and Ann Hope Thomas. Richard Pleasants Gravely married Sarah Hay Mullins, daughter of Judge Henry Green Mullins and Ann Whitten McCabe, on 30 April 1915 at Henry Co., VA.

The opportunity is now present for the completion of the hard surface road between Martinsville and Fieldale, a link urgently needed for the good and progress of out city. At present a plan is on foot whereby the city of Martinsville guarantees $13,400.00 on the project, provided the citizens of the city subscribe $6,000; the total cost of building the road being $19,400.00. We are gratified to say the response to the appeal for funds from some quarters has been exceedingly good, while others have a tendency to lag behind, and a great many yet to be heard from. There is no question about the importance and necessity of building this piece of hard surface road; its urgent need being recognized by all of us - - and, THE QUICKER WE RAISE THE MONEY, THE SOONER WE GET THE ROAD. The time to act is NOW - - it is simply a case of PUTTING UP or SHUTTING UP about the bumps, broken springs, etc., and the otherwise terrible condition of this road.      Harriet Graverson was born on 28 March 1909 at Nebraska. She married Thomas B. Patterson, son of William H. Patterson and Julia Hunt Gillmore, on 1 July 1932 at Yakima, Yakima Co., WA, no children as of April, 1940. Harriet Graverson died in December 1988 at age 79.

     Alice M. Graves was born circa 1906 at Sedgwick Co. (probably), KS.¹ She was the daughter of Charles Graves and Lillian May Armstrong.¹

     Ashley Graves was born in 1800 at Massachusetts. He married Jenima Gunn. Ashley Graves died on 16 December 1867 at Licking Co., OH. He was buried in December 1867 at Old Colony Burying Ground, Granville, Licking Co., OH, Findagrave #19662210.

     Bennie Mayford Graves was born on 4 February 1900 at Loudon Co., TN. He was the son of William Graves and Elizabeth Rogers.      Carolyn Graves was also known as "Carrie". She was born on 8 March 1874; daughter of William H. and Jennie Frances (Montgomery) Graves. She married Fourth Pattee Starr, son of Nehemiah Davis Starr and Henrietta Hadley. Carolyn Graves died on 25 October 1966 at age 92. She was buried in October 1966 at Forest Grove Cemetery, Canton, Lewis Co., MO, Findagrave #7969260.

     Charles Graves was born on 18 July 1873 at Kansas.¹ He married Lillian May Armstrong, daughter of Christopher Armstrong and Mary Ann Poland, on 25 December 1902. Charles Graves died on 17 April 1967 at Wichita, Sedgwick Co., KS, at age 93.

     Daisy R. Graves was born circa June 1909 at Wichita, Sedgwick Co., KS.¹ She was the daughter of Charles Graves and Lillian May Armstrong.¹

     Harriet Maria Graves was born on 10 December 1833 at Sunderland, Franklin Co., MA. She was the daughter of Ashley Graves and Jenima Gunn. Harriet Maria Graves married Jeremiah Brumback, son of John Brumback and Rebecca Davis, on 19 December 1856 at Franklin, Johnson Co., IN. Harriet Maria Graves died on 21 January 1900 at McMinnville, Yamhill Co., OR, at age 66. She was buried in January 1900 at Pioneer Cemetery, Boise, Ada Co., ID.

     John Moffett Graves was born in 1852. He married Leonora E. Pierce, daughter of Daniel E. Pierce and S. Virginia Swyer, on 1 October 1878 at Jasper Co., MO, One child (Minnie) born to the marriage. Occupation: Teamster in 1900 at Boulder Co., CO.¹ John Moffett Graves died in 1924. He was buried in 1924 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Glendale, Glendale, Los Angeles Co., CA, Findagrave #127946856.

     Mary Ellen Graves was born on 24 August 1873 at Shipman, Macoupin Co., IL. She married John Christian Payne on 11 February 1892 at Oberlin, Decatur Co., KS. Mary Ellen Graves died on 5 September 1935 at New Castle, Garfield Co., CO, at age 62.

     Mayford Ogeta Graves was born on 23 August 1923 at Anthony, Harper Co., KS. He was the son of Bennie Mayford Graves and Mary Dalene Windle. Mayford Ogeta Graves died on 7 September 2007 at Harper Co., KS, at age 84.

     Minnie Viola Graves was born on 2 September 1882 at Wapello Co. (probably), IA.¹ She was the daughter of John Moffett Graves and Leonora E.
