Duane Wendel Hennigh

M, b. 7 February 1930, d. 6 July 2013
Duane Wendel Hennigh was born on 7 February 1930 at Ashland, Clark Co., KS. He died on 6 July 2013 at Elk City, Beckham Co., OK, at age 83 Obituary (Findagrave.com):

Son of Ursal & Ruby Hennigh in a family of eight children. Duane grew up on the Cimarron River southwest of Englewood, KS where he attended school. Duane was two weeks shy of a high school diploma when the call of a rodeo came upon him, which he couldn't resist.

Duane married Marjorie Jean McKee at Canadian, TX, on July 31, 1949; they began raising a family in Laverne, OK. Duane participated in amateur rodeos until 1951 then with the support of a friend, R.A. Lotspeich, he embarked on his professional rodeo career. He was an All-Around Cowboy. He competed in every event. In 1955 he won the bareback riding at the World's Championship Rodeo in Madison Square Garden in New York City,

You never knew after a weekend of rodeoing what the aspiring young cowboy, Duane, would bring home. They had high hopes of learning from his skills and he was glad to oblige. On the other hand, sometimes Duane just needed to be a hand on the ranch.

During the 1960s, later in his rodeo career, Duane began training race horses in his local town of Laverne, OK, while still hitting the rodeo scene. He moved to Sayre, OK, in 1973. In 1977, Duane fully retired from rodeo & began his second career of training race horses. This aspect of his life would take him to many race tracks around the country. This would allow him to add to his many accomplishments as a true horseman. This included things like Top Trainer at La Mesa Park in Raton, NM. Duane was inducted into the Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City in 2000. During his careers in both professions he toted his family along. It gave his kids & grandkids experiences & memories they will cherish forever. Duane's passion for horses would last his lifetime.

Duane was a good man.

He was buried in July 2013 at Sayre-Doxey Cemetery, Sayre, Beckham Co., OK, Findagrave #113830427.
