Charles "Corky" Harger was born October 18, 1941, in Vinton, Iowa, and went to be with his loving wife, Sandy, and best friend, Ben Reynolds, on June 20, 2017. He was the third of five children born to Orland & Lois Harger.

He was predeceased by his parents and oldest brother, Lyle Harger.

He is survived by his brother, Dr. M. L. Harger and his wife, Helen, of Deer Park, Cheryl Boyd and her husband, Sam, of Horseshoe Bay and brother, Gary Harger and his wife, Elene, of Georgetown. He is also survived by his four children, Tammy Tinsley and her husband, Pat, of Lubbock, James Harger and his wife, Donna, of Lubbock, Lee Harger and his wife, Michelle, of Lubbock and Chris Harger and his wife, Heather, of Lubbock. He was also a proud granddad and great granddad of 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

An honorably discharged veteran of the USAF as a radar technician, Corky spent many years following his discharge servicing radio towers and radio phones long before the advent of the cell phone. In his time, he climbed some of the tallest radio towers throughout Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. In more recent years, he and his late wife Sandy were the owners and operators of Ft. Bend Saddlery, a tack and leather supply company based in Richmond/Rosenberg focused on the hunter/jumper clubs and shows throughout the Southwest.

Other than his family and “Big Red” his Harley, his proudest achievement was his involvement with Alcoholics Anonymous clubs in the Richmond area and the lives he has directly impacted through his sobriety, love, encouragement and commitment. His family thanks this larger family of his closest friends for their love, encouragement and support over the past few months as his health declined. A special thank you is due to Thurman Bolton and Dr. Ivan Mefford for their devotion and continued care.

A celebration of his life and the lives of those he touched will be held at Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home in Rosenberg with a time for friends and family on this Friday, June 23, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., service on Saturday, June 24, 2016, at 2:00 p.m., graveside immediately following at Morton Cemetery in Richmond.

Pallbearers are Gary Carol, Gary Bob Moran, Al Kovar, Thurman Bolton, Sam Sloan and grandson Jason Johnson.

Harold L. Harger, 90, a longtime resident of Des Peres, MO, died peacefully in his home on Saturday, Aug. 23, 2008.

Harold was born March 4, 1918, in Benton County, IA, the son of Grover and Nellie Harger. He graduated from Urbana High School in 1936 and Cedar Rapids Business College in 1939. He enlisted in the Army in 1942, attended Officer Candidate School, and served in Europe until December 1945 as a First Lieutenant in the 398th Quartermaster Truck Company. He married Pauline Zimmerman, his wife of 60 years, on July 12, 1942.

After high school, Harold worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) during The Depression under the Iowa National Guard. He was a salesman for Wilson Meat Co. for several years. After his military service he obtained his private pilot's license on the GI Bill. In 1949, he was employed as a salesman for Allied Mills, Inc., a position he held until his retirement in 1983. Harold was a hard worker, dependable and honest, and enjoyed his work. He received many honors for outstanding performance as a salesman, including the Pacesetter Award in 1976. He made many lasting friendships from those he met in his work.

Harold enjoyed traveling and made regular trips with his family as their children were growing up. After he retired, he and Pauline wintered in their travel trailer in Florida and South Texas for many years. They traveled extensively across the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii, and visited friends and family from coast-to- coast. He also returned to Europe with an Army buddy and their wives to revisit places they had seen during World War II. After Pauline suffered a severe stroke in 1989 and became disabled, Harold cared for her at home for 11 years. He loved his wife, his children, his grandchildren, his home, and his friends. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, carpentry projects, growing tomatoes, flying, and travel. Harold was a very social person: he was a member of Kirkwood United Methodist Church, Kirkwood Masonic Lodge 484, and the St. Louis Shrine.

Harold is survived by his children, Joann Bender of Iowa City, IA, Patricia Bax of Des Peres, MO, Thomas (Barbara) of Albuquerque, NM, and James (Karen) of Rockford, IL; his sister, Annabell Weaver of Cedar Rapids, IA; his brother, Verle Harger of Bellflower, CA; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Pauline (Zimmerman) Harger in 2002; his brother, Orland Harger in 1995; and his grandson, Bret David Bender in 2007.

Visitation will be at Kirkwood United Methodist Church, 210 W. Adams, Kirkwood, MO, on Thursday, Aug. 28, from 2 to 4 PM, followed immediately by the memorial service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Harold's memory to Kirkwood United Methodist Church, St. John's Hospice, or the Shriner's Hospital for Children, St. Louis.

Joann B. Bender, 71, of Iowa City, died unexpectedly Friday, July 24, 2015.

A gathering for family and friends will be held from 3-4:30 p.m., Friday, July 31st at the Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City, concluding with a time of sharing, beginning at 4:30 p.m. Following that time, an open house will be held at 2433 Nevada Avenue in Iowa City. Memorials in Joann's name may be directed to the Brain Injury Alliance of Iowa.

Joann Beth Bender graduated from Kirkwood High school in St. Louis, Missouri in 1961, and earned her Nursing Degree from St. Louis' Deaconess College of Nursing in 1964. She was dedicated to her career in nursing and to helping others. She worked at the St. Louis Children's Hospital, St. Luke's in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, The University of Iowa Orthopedics Department and Hospital Schools. She later worked part-time at WIC of Johnson County.

Joann had a strong sense of community and volunteered continuously throughout her life. She was an active member of Big Brothers Big Sisters, as each of her children where "Littles". She served on the board, organizing events, and as a recruiter. She was integral to the organization's transition from the locally based PALS program to the Big Brothers Big Sisters national affiliation. For the past ten years, she was an active member of the Brain Injury Alliance of Southeastern Iowa, serving on the board, organizing events, and helping to create a support group for caretakers. In 2013 she was named volunteer of the year through The ARC.

She was a devoted single mother of four, a daughter, a big sister, and a friend. She never hesitated to go the extra mile – literally or figuratively – for those she loved. Her love and generosity expended far beyond the family she was born into. Many people regarded her as second a mother and a grandmother. She organized family events, hosted holidays, and was the keeper of the family history. She loved to travel and experience new things. She was an artist, loved to sew and craft. She was a do-it-yourselfer to the end. She was the definition of strength, fortitude, and grace, and demonstrated this through every challenge she faced. She was always present, willing to listen, often giving advice, forming a plan and taking action; whether aiding a friend in need or caring for a sick family member she gave her all. She was an inspiration to everyone who knew her.

Joann was preceded in death by her parents, Pauline and Harold Harger and her youngest son, Bret Bender. She is survived by her children, Scott (Santwana Dasgupta), Sarah and Kathleen (Seth Owen), and their families; a sister, Pat Bax, and brothers, Tom (Barb) Harger, and Jim (Karen) Harger, and their families.

Joann was an amazing, independent woman whose strength and luminosity will continue to radiate. She will continue to be a motivation in the lives of everyone she knew.

Pals Program: Appreciation Week

The biggest boosters of the Pals Program are probably the people it serves.

Joann Bender, 2433 Nevada Ave., has two children in the program.

Scott, 12, a seventh grader at South East Junior High School, was matched last April with Jack Darland, 316 S. Johnson St., a University of Iowa student.

Sarah, 9, a fourth grader at Grant Wood Elementary School, was matched in November with Pat Curry, 547 Emerald St., an employee of Hawkeye Wholesale.

The Benders wrote letters about their experiences with the program.

A mother's view:

"Single parenting is a balancing act," involves "trying to somehow make time and money and energy stretch far enough to give everyone a fair share," Bender said in a letter of support for the Pals Program.

"Four children (ages 3, 6, 9 and 12) a job, a house, a car, the yard, the finances, laundry, shopping, cooking, illnesses, child care and other activities of daily living seemed at times like a never-ending uphill climb.

"Always conspicuous was the ever present need of four special children for individual recognition, to be talked to and listened to, to develop their own ever broadening personal interests."

"I tried many approaches. I let one stay up late, in turn. I occasionally kept one home from school.

"We took turns having private outings with mom. I pent a lot of money for sitters to leave three to be with one and always came home to three children who felt somewhat slighted and demanded even more of my attention. I felt I always 'owed' something to someone.

"Then I found Pals. My children were enthusiastic from the start and very accepting of my honestly stating the problem: you need a special adult and it can't always be me.'

"We have a family agreement that each child gets a Pal when he or she enters first grade and then gets less of Mom's time. This seems fair to everyone and has eliminated any jealousy from the young ones."

"Scot has learned to travel confidently by bus and can ride his bike safely in city traffic. (His Pal doesn't have a car). He got started in model rocketry with good supervision. (What do Moms know of such things?)

"Sarah made a beautiful piece of macramé (not one of my skills), had help making puppets and someone to listen to her plays which can go on indefinitely.

"Both children are seeing a different life style and are learning attitudes unlike my own which will broaden their consideration of choices as adults.

"While Sarah and Scott are busy with their Pals, I can spend time with the younger children without anyone feeling slighted.

"Even our family outings are more relaxed and fun because no one is pushing forward with a terribly acute need for individual attention.

"Single parenting is still a struggle, though not without its rewards. But Pals has tipped the scales to everyone's advantage in my family.

"My unending gratitude goes out to all the fine people at Pals."
Scott says:

Pals is a good group because:
1. My Mom works 3 to 11 p.m. so we can't really do after school activities.
2. Gives you someone you can really talk to.
3. Show you new things.
4. Gives you another view on problems.
5. Visits give you something to look forward to.
6. Help on work and projects.
7. Can do things with a Pal without little brothers or sisters getting in the way.

Sarah says:

I like having a Pal because I can do new things I didn't know about before like macramé and playing chess. I wasn't able to do a lot of stuff before my pal came because of the two youngest kids in our family. The most fun thing is meeting a new person that likes to do the things you like to do and even more. I like being with my Pal because when my mom can't do something with me once a eek, my Pal can.

Lyle Hargers Are To Live In Houston

WICHITA FALLS (Special) -- Mr. and Mrs., Lyle Edwin Harger (Patricia Nell Dowdy), whose marriage took place at 8 p.m. Thursday at First Methodist Church will be at home in Houston, where she is employed with Humble Oil and Refining Co. and he is a student at the University of Houston.

Mr. and Mrs. Paul Dowdy of this city and Mr. and Mrs. O. F. Harger of 2422 32nd St. Lubbock, are parents of this couple.

The Rev. Neil Winslow officiated at a double-ring ceremony following musical numbers by Don Owen and Jim Herndon.

Presented in marriage by her father, the bride wore a gown of embroidered tulle, the fitted bodice featuring a portrait neckline edged in lace, brief sleeves and a bouffant skirt fashioned with nine tiers of embroidered tulle terminating in a fan shaped train. The tiered veil of imported French illusion fell to fingertip length from a tiara of seed pearls and iridescent sequins. The bride carried white sweetheart roses with shower of lilies-of-the valley.

Sisters Are Attendants

The bride's attendants were her sister, Mrs. Denny Bishop of Houston and the bridegroom's sister, Miss Cheryl Harger of Lubbock. They wore royal blue street-length peau de soie dresses made with scoop necklines, cap sleeves and fitted with pearl trim and carried stylized arrangements of white pompons.

Dennis Frank Bishop of Houston was best man and the bride's brother, Ronnie Dowdy, was groomsman. Guests were seated by C. H. Dowdy Jr. and Tommy Thompson and Donald Scheverak of Houston.

Following the reception in Fellowship Hall, the couple left for a trip to Corpus Christi, the bride traveling in a navy blue silk suit with matching accessories and a corsage of white roses.

Mrs. Harger, a former student at Midwestern university in this city, received a BBA degree from the University of Houston. She was presented as a Junior Forum debutante in Wichita Falls.

Her husband attended Tom S. Lubbock High School and graduated from Schreiner Institute, Kerrville. He is a member of the university basketball team.

Silver Wedding Day Will Be Observed By Hargers

Mr. and Mrs. O. F. Harger, 2422 32nd St., will celebrate their silver wedding anniversary at an open house from 7 until 10 p.m. Saturday at their home.

The couple have four sons, Lyle and Merlyn Harger of Houston; Charles Harger of Amarillo and Gary of the home, and one daughter, Miss Cheryl Harger.

Honest Man Finds Merchant's Lost Cash Box

"My faith in mankind has been renewed," said Orland F. Harger of Belleville Tuesday after a stranger returned his cash box containing $260 that he had misplaced on Monday afternoon.

Mr. Harger, who recently opened the Belleville Feed and Supply Company at 601 Benton st., Belleville said he had placed the metal box on top of his car about 5:20 p.m. Monday. He was holding several other articles when he entered the car.

When he drove away, the box fell to the pavement near his company. The finder, Danny Walta. 26, a florist of 2209 Caseyville ave., East St. Louis, took the cash box to the Belleville police station.

Mr. Harger called the police to report the loss at 7 p.m. and was informed that the box was awaiting him at the station. It contained $130 in cash and the same amount in checks.

Mr. Walta received a $10 reward from Mr. Harger.

Verle Dean Harger, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died June 29, 2012, in Bellflower, Calif., after a long illness. Services were held today at Fairhaven Memorial Park, Santa Ana, Calif.

Verle was born to Grover and Nellie (Johnson) Harger on May 29, 1930, in the back of his parent’s grocery store in Urbana, lowa. During the Depression his parents moved to a farm where he attended a one-room schoolhouse. His family later moved to Cedar Rapids and he graduated in 1946 from Wilson High School.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia; daughter, Rebecca Burner; and brothers, Orland and Harold Harger.

He is survived by a son, Verle Tom Harger (Daneen) of Parker, Colo; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Annabell Weaver of Cedar Rapids.

Verle had a tire company in Wilmington, Calif., supplying tires to trucks stranded on the highway. He had this business until he retired.

Verle loved his Lord and considered everyone he met a friend. He was generous to a fault.

Two San Mateo Sisters Die After R. C. Traffic Accident
A luncheon outing ended tragically yesterday when two elderly San Mateo sisters were fatally injured in a Redwood City traffic acident.
Mrs. Daisy Summers, 83 and her sister, Mrs. Bertha Hargett, 79, both of 1510 Lorraine Avenue in San Mateo, died early today at Kaiser Hospital, Redwood City, of internal injuries suffered in the crash.
A third sister, Mrs. Nona Darnall, 81 also of the same address, was seriously injured and is reported in fair condition at Mills Memorial Hospital. Also injured was Mrs. Dora Sherer, 55, 438 Cavanaugh Street, San Mateo, and Mrs. Shirley A. Morrris, 59 1121 Juanita Avenue, Burlingame. Mrs. Sherer is in fair condition at Mills Hospital with a head injury. Mrs. Morris was treated for cuts at Kaiser Hospital. The accident occurred at 12:20 p. m. at the intersection of Woodside Expressway and Broadway when a car driven by Mrs. Morris made a left turn from the center eastbound lane of the expressway and was sruck by an oncoming pickup truck driven by Laurence O. Clark, 36, a Castro Valley cabinet maker.
Policemen Pete McDonald and Vincent Truscelli said that Mrs. Morris apparently became confused by the traffic signal arrow and made the left turn from the optional center lane while the arrow was showing green for straight ahead traffic only.
Police say the arrow system which sometimes permits a left turn from the center lane, poses a safety hazard at the intersetion with drivers not only making left turns on the straight ahead arrow, but stopping on the green arrow to wait for the left turn arrow. The signal system was installed by the state and is maintained by the division of highways.

Mrs. Morris told the police officers that she was making the turn onto Broadway with the intention of going to a nearby restaurant where the the women intended to have lunch.
Mrs. Hargett is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Velma Heinrich, of 627 Vera Avenue, Redwood City.

After a life well-lived, Arden Lee White and Sheryl Elaine "Sherry" (Hargett) White went to be with their Lord and Savior on June 4, 2016. Arden was born to James & Opal White in Wellington, KS March 19, 1944. Sherry was born to Bill and Doris Hargett in Hutchinson, KS on July 2, 1947. They met and married in Stafford, KS on June 18, 1967. Arden and Sherry lived in California briefly while Arden served his country in the United States Navy. After serving in the Navy, they moved to Oklahoma City. They lived in their current home for over 44 years. Sherry worked for a while as an RN in OKC and Moore; they both owned and operated A&L Heat & Air, Inc for 20 years. Arden & Sherry loved to travel, and especially enjoyed camping and boating. Sherry loved to quilt, sew and craft, while Arden loved woodworking and fixing almost anything. For over 45 years, they were members of Hillcrest Christian Church. Arden & Sherry enjoyed being with each other and were almost always together during work, play, worship and now even in death! They were both preceded in death by their parents; and Arden's sister, Joyce Boos. Arden & Sherry are survived by daughters, Angela Snowden & husband Jonathan and Jennifer Smith & husband Jeffery; grandchildren, Cody, Julie, and Jaci Smith; and Elaine, Renee, and Nathan Snowden; Arden's brother, Gary; Sherry's sister, Lynette, and brother, Kevin; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Thomas F. Hargis, was born in the quiet hamlet of Jackson (named in honor of Andrew Jackson), situated in Breathitt county. The date of his birth on the family record reads, 24th day of June, 1842. He was reared in his native county, and something of the spirit and strength, capability and resource of it seems to have taken root and flourished in his sturdy, enduring, but affable and sunny disposition. He applied himself to the study of law, and in April, 1866, he received his license to practice his profession. He entered upon the same in Rowan county, Ky., but in 1868 he removed to Carlisle, Nicholas county, Ky., where a finer opening awaited his energy and his ambition, and where the culmination of his heart's desire was reached, for in the month of June--the glorious time of sunshine and roses--on the 23rd day of said month in the following year, 1869, he was married to Miss Lucy Stewart Norvell, of Carlisle, Ky. From this auspicious moment fortune and honor seemed to have clasped hands and united energies in their desire to shower benefits on him.
At an especial election for county judge held in September, 1869, he was elected to fill the position, which he did with such credit to himself and satisfaction to the general public that in August, 1870, he was re-elected to the same position without opposition. In 1871 he was nominated by a Democratic convention, and at the August election, 1871, he was chosen senator from the Thirtieth district, defeating Judge James W. Anderson by four hundred and fifty-nine majority. He served four years in that position, winning many friends in his public career, and endearing himself to his constituents by a manly and conscientious adherence to their interests.
At the convention held for the purpose of nominating a criminal and equity judge of the Fourteenth Judicial district, Mr. Hargis was nominated unanimously, and was elected in March, 1878, over Colonel John L. Hickman (Republican), of Maysville, Ky., by twenty-two hundred and fourteen majority. He filled this position also with great credit to himself until April 24, 1879, when he received the nomination at Owingsville, Ky., as the choice of the Democratic party for the Court of Appeals for the First Appellate district, and on the 12th day of May, 1879, he was elected over the present incumbent, Judge W. H. Holt, of Mount Sterling, Ky., and this by the handsome majority of thirty-five hundred and fifty-five votes. He served on the bench of the Court of Appeals until the 1st day of September, 1884.
At the close of his term Judge Hargis removed to Louisville, Ky., and began the practice of law, having declined to run for re-election to the arduous position he had so creditably filled. His opinions while on the Supreme Bench of Kentucky met with the highest praise among attorneys in and out of the State. He has formed here a partnership with Captain George M. Eastin, than whom lives not on earth a more gallant and gracious gentleman, and the firm name is "Hargis & Eastin," and I venture the prophecy that it will become a power at the bar throughout the Commonwealth, for as practitioners of the law both gentlemen have a profound and thorough knowledge of its principles, and the most approved forms of practice, and as a consequence are bound to hold their eminence in the profession and add new laurels to their fame as clear, logical, and forcible practitioners.
Judge Hargis is candid and honest, bold and fearless, a ready debater, an able lawyer, and exhaustive thinker. His intellect is of a high order. In every relation of life, by firm and inflexible integrity, he has won the approbation of his fellowmen, and the warm and sincere affection of his many personal friends. He is a self-made man, and is one of the finest examples of the ennobling tendency of Republican institutions, and an encouragement to all meritorious and aspiring young men in America.
