William Franklin Herbert

     William Franklin Herbert was born on 24 April 1914 at Williamsport, Washington Co., MD. He began military service WW II service, U.S. Army, North Africa and Italy. He married Ruth Marie McIlnay, daughter of Burton Kridler McIlnay and Verna Barnhizer, no children. William Franklin Herbert died on 21 April 2005 at Austin, Travis Co., TX, at age 90

William Franklin (Frank) Herbert, age 90, of Austin, passed away Saturday, May 21, 2005. He was born April 24, 1914, in Williamsport, Maryland, the son of B.F. and Anna Herbert.

He served four years in the Army during World War II and received six battle stars for participation in the North African and Italian battles. Upon the war's end, he went to work with the Veterans Administration in Washington, D.C. He was transferred to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1960, to pioneer in the computer application of Veteran's records. Frank was then transferred to Austin, Texas in 1966, prior to the opening of the VA computer center.

He became a member of the Hill City Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite Bodies and the Ben Hur Shrine Temple. Frank was an avid golfer and was proud of the fact he often scored better than his age. He also liked to tell stories and shared his humor with all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Herbert in September 3, 2003; his parents, and two brothers, Fred and Ralph.

Memorial services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Thursday, June 9, 2005 at First United Methodist Church, 1201 Lavaca St., Austin, Texas 78701.

He was buried in 2005 at Houston National Cemetery, Houston, Harris Co., TX, Findagrave #11092074.
