SUMMERVILLE -- Funeral services for Mrs. Hellen Haws Hardin were held today at Bethany Methodist Church, with burial in Live Oak Cemetery, Walterboro.

Mrs. Hardin, 64, wife of William Lawrence Hardin, died Wednesday at a Charleston hospital.

Born in Walterboro, she was a daughter of Samuel N. and Kathleen Reeves Haws. She was an administrative assistant at Baptist College, Charleston.

Surviving are her husband; a son, Lawrence G. Hardin of Columbia; two daughters, Mrs. Thomas W. Harwood of Florence and Mrs. W. N. McDowell Jr. of Columbia; three sisters, Mrs. W. Perry Murphy, Mrs. Ted C. Hodges and Mrs. Mary C. Stone of Walterboro, and two granddaughters.

Memorials may be made to the new dormitory fund at Baptist College.

News of the death of J. Harrison Haws, prominent Sullivan Countian, and well known in Kingsport, at his home on the Horse Creek Road, near Haws' Cross Road, was received here today. Reports are that Mr. Haws, who is about 80 years of age, died suddenly of heart failure about 11 o'clock yesterday morning.

He was former president of the old Interstate Trust and Savings Bank, now the Farmers and Merchants Bank here. His son, S. N. Haws, now in New York City, is also prominently connected in Kingsport.

Funeral and interment will be held tomorrow afternoon at two o'clock according to the report from Jonesboro, the undertaking establishment there having the body in charge. Arrangements are pending, awaiting word from S. N. Haws. Interment will take place at Jonesboro.

-Besides his wife, the deceased is survived by a brother, Tom Haws, of Horse Creek Road and many other relatives in this section.

     Mary Haws was also known as "Polly". She was born on 22 December 1794 at Virginia. She married Jacob Armay Keebler III, son of Rev. Jacob Armay Keebler and Mary Young, on 29 October 1812 at Jonesborough, Washington Co., TN. Mary Haws died on 23 August 1865 at Washington Co., TN, at age 70.

     Mary Claire Haws was born on 6 February 1911 at Johnson City, Washington Co., TN.¹ She was the daughter of Samuel Nathan Haws and Kathleen Reeves.¹ Mary Claire Haws married Everett Bascom Stone Jr. on 29 May 1948, no children. WALTERBORO - Elizabeth Haws Murphy, 95, a retired school teacher, died Thursday at the Colleton Place.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday at the Graveside in Live Oak Cemetery, conducted by Rev. Lee Cothran and directed by THE FRED PARKER FUNERAL HOME.
Mrs. Murphy was born March 29, 1905 in Bristol, TN, a daughter of the late Samuel Nathan Haws and Kathleen Reeves Haws. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church and the D.A.R. She was a graduate of Cornell University. She was the the widow of William Perry Murphy.

Surviving are: 3 nieces, Carol R. Simmons of Walterboro, Kathleen Harwood of Ridgeway and Helen McDowell of Irmo and a nephew, Lawrence G. Hardin of Columbia.

Samuel Nathan Haws was born on 28 June 1879 in Tennessee. His father was a farmer near Kingsport, Tennessee. Throughout Samuel Hawsf life he invested in land and stocks, ran lumber companies, and farmed. He owned lumber tracts just outside Walterboro, South Carolina; Johnson City, Tennessee; and Kingsport, Tennessee.

He married Kathleen Reeves on 22 June 1904. Her family home was Wheatland plantation in Washington County, Tennessee. She graduated from Jonesboro [Tennessee] High School on 23 May 1895 and attended Peabody Normal College. She worked as a teacher prior to their marriage, and in April 1921 she was appointed to the Kingsport [Tennessee] Board of Education.

Following their marriage, the couple moved to St. Matthews, South Carolina, where Samuel Haws practiced law for a number of years. In 1913 he bought a tract of land near Kingsport, Tennessee, for use in his lumber business. The following year, he financed the building of a railroad siding for use in these endeavors. By 1917 he had moved his family to a 2,740-acre land tract near Stokes, South Carolina (just north of Walterboro). This land was used in his lumber operation, but he also farmed and raised livestock on it. Over the next several years, Haws frequently traveled between Walterboro and his various business interests in Tennessee.

From 1924 to 1926 the family lived in Jackson Heights, New York. During this time, Hawsf daughters attended Camp Norchunkaw in Queens, New York. The family moved back south but returned in 1933 when Haws became the office manager for the Government Crop Loans program.

He was associated with the Haws-Harmon Lumber Company (Johnson City and Kingsport, Tennessee), the S.N. Haws Wholesale Lumber (Johnson City, Tennessee), the Walterboro Lumber Company (Walterboro, South Carolina), the Holston Lumber Corporation (Kingsport, Tennessee), and the Palmetto Corporation (of which he was principal stockholder).

In addition, he was on the board of directors for the First National Bank of Walterboro and the Walterboro Press & Standard newspaper.

Miss Kathleen Reeves, daughter of Mrs. Mary Reeves, of this city, was married to Mr. Samuel N. Haws at 8:30 o'clock this evening in the First Presbyterian Church. Dr. W. O. Cochrane officiated. The bride is a daughter of the late Capt. I. E. Reeves, of Jonesboro, Tenn. For two years she had been in Bristol as a teacher in the city schools. The groom is a lawyer of Jonesboro.

South Carolina Man In Class Reunion

WASHINGTON -- Oct. 11 -- Samuel Haws, a lumberman from S. C., is one of the five surviving members of the class of 1900 at George Washington University, who had their first reunion at the university here this week.

This is a full attendance of the surviving members out of the 12 who composed the class of fifty-two years ago.

Miss Pearl E. Thonssen of Washington, retired assistant principal of Western High School was the only woman present. The four men had not met since they graduated from what was then Columbian College.

The quartet were Brig. Gen.. H. C. Coburn, U. S. A., retired; Hubert B. Fuller, a lawyer of Cleveland; William D. Serrett of Washington, and Haws.

     Sarah Haws was born on 22 June 1795 at Washington Co., TN.¹ She married James Keebler, son of Rev. Jacob Armay Keebler and Mary Young, on 6 August 1827 at Washington Co., TN. Sarah Haws died on 18 June 1888 at Washington Co., TN, at age 92. She was buried in June 1888 at Keebler Cemetery, Telford, Washington Co., TN, Findagrave #144845521.

     Sarah Malinda Haws was born on 23 November 1840 at Washington Co., TN. She was the daughter of James Haws and Mary Keebler. Sarah Malinda Haws married William W.      Lugenia Izora Hawthorne was born on 14 April 1871 at Highland Co., OH. She was the daughter of George Hawthorne and Orpha Malott. Lugenia Izora Hawthorne married Dallas Orlando Wilkin, son of Samuel Wilkin and Roseannah Webster, on 24 December 1894 at Highland Co., OH. Lugenia Izora Hawthorne died on 18 December 1952 at Fairview, Highland Co., OH, at age 81.

     Charles Oscar Hay was born on 6 July 1886. He was the son of John J. Hay and Katherine Waggoner. Charles Oscar Hay married Myrtie Lulu Newman, daughter of Stephen A. D. Newman and Samantha Emaline Tallman, on 25 September 1901.

     Edna Lillian Hay was born on 1 October 1903. She was the daughter of Charles Oscar Hay and Myrtie Lulu Newman. Edna Lillian Hay married Robert Herald Bainbridge on 20 August 1923.

     George Washington Hay was born in December 1870 at Stark Co., OH.¹ He was the son of Valentin Höh and Elvina Book.¹ George Washington Hay married Maggie H. (?) circa 1901.² George Washington Hay lived in April 1910 at Pike Twp., Stark Co., OH.²

     Ira C. Hay was born on 8 April 1881 at Sugar Creek Twp., Stark Co., OH. He was the son of Adolf M. Höh and Ellen J. Welty. Ira C. Hay married Nettie Leighley, daughter of Margaret (?), on 18 February 1906 at Stark Co., OH, no children. Ira C. Hay died on 16 September 1935 at Massillon, Stark Co., OH, at age 54. He was buried on 18 September 1935 at Union Lawn Cemetery, Navarre, Stark Co., OH.
