He was a son of Everett and Forest Bussart Hunter. He graduated from Amanda H.S. in 1945. He married Ruby Thompson and they had two children, Patti and Paul.

Harold was a lifelong member of the Mount Zion United Methodist Church, member of the Amanda Lions Club and Farm Bureau Council No. 13. He was an electrician for General Electric and retired after 33 years of service. After retiring, he enjoyed working for Old Mill Power Equipment in Ashville.
