Emma Claiborne James married Dr. Robert Searcy Wendel, son of David Wendel and Sarah Hale Neilson, on 3 November 1852 at Rutherford Co., TN. Emma Claiborne James died on 27 July 1886 at Murfreesboro, Rutherford Co., TN, at age 53.      Frederick James married Rebecca Starr, daughter of James Starr and Sarah Minshall, on 30 November 1797 at Middletown Meeting, Delaware Co., PA.

Eckerson and Anna G. Lapp, on 21 June 1893 at Cass Co., IL.² Harriet A. James lived in 1900 at Beardstown, Cass Co., IL. She lived in 1910 at 398 Park Street, Sheridan, Sheridan Co., WY.³ She lived in 1920 at 440 West Brundage, Sheridan, Sheridan Co., WY. She lived in February 1938 at Casper, Natrona Co., WY, per her mother's obituary. She died on 31 October 1958 at Casper, Natrona Co., WY.      Hattie Mae James was born on 17 June 1892 at St. James, Phelps Co., MO.¹ She was the daughter of Henry James and Medora Jane Moreland. Hattie Mae James married Julius Raymond DeVault, son of Thomas Davault and Lucinda Isabelle Blain, on 20 March 1914 at St. James, Phelps Co., MO. FARMER CITY -- The funeral of Mrs. Hattie Mae DeVault, 84, who died Wednesday, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Stensel's Funeral Home, Farmer City.
The Rev. Price Flannery will officiate. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
She was born June 17, 1892, in St. James, Mo., a daughter of Henry and Dora Bane (sic) James. She married Julius DeVault March 20, 1914, in St. James. He died March 24, 1970.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Dora O'Neal, Farmer City; Mrs. Clara Hooser, Mansfield, and Mrs. Dorothy Hubbs, Bloomington; four sons, Henry, William and Robert all of Farmer City, and Frank, Normal, a sister, Mrs. Minnie Hughes, St. James, Mo; 13 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons and a daughter.
Memorials may be made to the Cancer Fund or the United Heart Foundation.

     Helen Aitken James was born on 3 June 1916 at Hudson, Columbia Co., NY, New York State, Birth Index, 1881-1942 (Ancestry.com.)¹ She was the daughter of Lee Roy James and Caroline Louise Aitkin.¹ Helen Aitken James lived on 20 April 1940 at East 31st Street, Manhattan, New York Co., NY; lodging with her sister Carolyn in the household of John and Alma Ramage, working as a secretary in a church.² She married John Elliott McCrea Jr. on 3 August 1940 at Manhattan, New York Co., NY; no children as of the 1950 census. Helen remarried at Manhattan in 1968 to W. Dodge. Helen Aitken James lived on 6 April 1950 at East 27th Street, New York, New York Co., NY, Secretary for church.³ She died on 30 April 1998 at age 81.

     Henry James was born on 2 November 1857 at Maries Co., MO. He married Medora Jane Moreland on 2 August 1877 at Maries Co., MO. Henry James died on 30 September 1937 at St. James, Phelps Co., MO, at age 79.

     Isaac James was born in March 1858 at Virginia or Pensylvania per daughter Nettie's 1900 census information.¹

     James S. James was born circa 1820 at Wales.¹ He married Margaret (?).¹

     Janice L. James was born on 3 April 1908 at Sheridan, Sheridan Co. (probably), WY.^2,1 She was the daughter of Lee Roy James and Caroline Louise Aitkin.¹ Janice L. James married Charles Haywood Hall on 23 February 1934 at Claverack, Columbia Co., NY. Janice L. James lived on 4 April 1950 at 16855 Pinehurst, Detroit, Wayne Co., MI.³ She died on 12 September 1993 at Marquette, Marquette Co., MI, at age 85.

     John Ashton James was born on 2 January 1918 at Newark, Licking Co., OH.¹ He was the son of Lewis R. James and Mary Edna Ashton.¹ John Ashton James died on 22 March 1999 at Licking Co., OH, at age 81.

Paralytic Stroke Occurring
On November 27, Is Cause

Mrs. William Briggs, aged and respected resident, passed away, at 8:15 o'clock, Sunday evening, at her home, on the west side, following an illness of many months' duration. Suffering a severe paralytic stroke in May 1934, she had been an invalid since that time, a second stroke, on November 27, resulting in her death.
She was in her 76th year, observing her 56th wedding anniversary upon Christmas Eve, and was the wife and mother of one of the community's most widely known families.
Rearing 11 children and two grand daughters to maturity, hers was the first death to occur in the immediate family, the comparative record being a very unusual one.
Being of a home and family loving disposition to a degree almost extraordinary, she was markedly reserved and loved by all of those who had gained her acquaintance.
The following obituary tells much of her life's history:
Elizabeth James, wife of William Briggs, was the daughter of the late Strawder and Rebecca Bush James. Born at Austin, Concord township, Ross County, on August 2, 1860, she was 75 years, four months and 27 days of age, departing this life upon December 29, 1935.
Being one of a family of eight children, she spent her girlhood days in the Austin community. She attended the Austin schools, completing her education at Ohio Wesleyan University, at Delaware. A talented artist in piano, she was a member of the Clionian musical sorority of that institution.
On December 24, 1879, she was united in marriage with William Briggs, a son of another of those pioneer Concord township families. To this union were born 11 children, six sons and five daughters, all of whom survive with the husband.
The children are: Harry, of Circleville; Lillie, Strawder, Jane, wife of Percy May, Warren, Bryce, of Circleville; Cecil, Lena, wife of Floyd James, Annalee, wife of McKinley Stinson, of Cleveland; Dudley, and Elizabeth, wife of Willard Peterson, of Austin.
Of her immediate family she leaves one sister, Mrs. Nancy Mallow, of Frankfort. Two brothers, Milton and Charles James, and two sisters, Mrs. Bell Putnam and Mrs. Clara Pancake, preceded her in death but a few years, one brother and one sister passing in infancy. There are 17 grand children and one great grand daughter. Betsy and Wilma, daughters of Strawder Briggs, were reared by the deceased and her husband.
Christmas Eve would have been celebrated as their 56th wedding anniversary, an event which in more recent years had been looked to in eager anticipation.
Her demise being the first in the family during the entire 56 years, an incentive is felt for even deeper sorrow.
She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church.
She was a loving wife and mother. Her religion was in her understanding and devoted love for her family, together with all of the Better Things. Motherly and neighborly hers was a useful life, one which can well be cherished by those who knew her.

Funeral services were conducted, at 2:00 o'clock, Tuesday afternoon, at the M.E. church. A large assemblage of relatives and friends paid their respects and there were many floral tributes.
Rev. H.E. Keifer, of Washington C.H., a former pastor of the church, read the funeral sermon, offering his personal praise for the deceased. Rev. F.E. Roberts, of Columbus, former local Church of Christ minister, sang beautifully three hymns accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Roberts. Rev. R.M. Morris, pastor of the church, offered a prayer.
The pallbearers were the six sons. Burial was made in the family lot in Concord cemetery, Frankfort. Arrangements were in charge of the Kirk Morticians.

     Lee Roy James was born on 27 November 1880 at Creston, Union Co., IA; WW II draft registration (Ancestry.com.)¹ He was the son of Arthur Edwin James and Edith M. Munson.¹ Lee Roy James lived on 1 June 1900 at Beardstown, Cass Co., IL.¹ He married Caroline Louise Aitkin on 18 June 1907 at Hudson, Columbia Co., NY. Occupation: Dentist, per WW I draft registration and censuses between 1910 and 1940. Lee Roy James lived in May 1910 at 44 Gould Street, Sheridan, Sheridan Co., WY, Dentist.² He lived in 1917 at Hudson, Columbia Co., NY, WW I draft registration. He lived on 9 January 1920 at Green Street, Hudson, Columbia Co., NY, Dentist.³ He lived on 3 May 1940 at 610 Columbia Street, Hudson, Columbia Co., NY.⁴ He died before 17 April 1950 at Hudson, Columbia Co. (probably), NY; living as of 1942 WW II draft registration, but his wife was widowed as of the 1950 census.

     Lewis R. James was born in 1859. He was the son of James S. James and Margaret (?)¹ Lewis R. James lived on 8 June 1900 at Columbus State Hospital, Columbus, Franklin Co., OH.² He married Mary Edna Ashton, daughter of John Henry Ashton and Angeline Catherine Jewett, on 31 July 1902 at Licking Co., OH. Lewis R. James died in 1951. He was buried in 1951 at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Newark, Licking Co., OH, Find A Grave Memorial# 112247305.

     Margaret J. James was born circa 1905. She married Edmund Madison Starling, son of John Madison Starling and Jennie Mercer, on 29 September 1932 at Duval Co., FL, Margaret was briefly married to an Almand. She was listed as single on the 1930 census, Jacksonville, FL.

     Margaret K. James was also known as "Maggie". She was born on 20 January 1867 at Pennsylvania.¹ She was the daughter of William James and Rebecca McNichol. Margaret K. James married Samuel B. Spiker in 1889. Margaret K. James married Charles E. Triem, son of Phillip Triem and Harriet C. Hartong, circa 1903.¹ Margaret K. James died on 16 August 1910 at Salem, Columbiana Co., OH, at age 43.

     Mary James was born on 23 December 1919 at Leesburg, Loudoun Co., VA. She married Glendon Paul Weatherholtz before 16 October 1940. Mary James and Glendon Paul Weatherholtz were divorced in June 1961 at Duval Co., FL. Mary James died on 28 March 2008 at Aldie, Loudoun Co., VA, at age 88.

     Mary Denver James married Arthur Sullivant Hoffman, son of Ripley C. Hoffman and Mary Eliza Sullivant. Mary Denver James was born in 1873. She died in 1910.

     Nettie James was born in October 1881 at Illinois.¹ She was the daughter of Isaac James.

     Ola Etta James was born in September 1872 at Indiana.¹ She married James Hitch Henton, son of Samuel R. Henton and Mary Jane Hitch, on 22 November 1893 at Cook Co., IL, no surviving children. Ola Etta James died in 1909. She was buried in 1909 at Greenwood Cemetery, Arrowsmith, McLean Co., IL, Findagrave #23030325.

     Patricia Ann James was born on 13 September 1922. She married Robert Nelson Ackerly on 5 July 1943 at Jackson Co., MO. Patricia Ann James died on 26 September 2011 at age 89. She was buried in 2011 at Saint Stephens Episcopal Memory Garden, Richmond, VA, Findagrave #184629931.

     Philip James married Mary Nichols, daughter of Nathaniel Nichols and Elizabeth Lincoln, on 25 May 1738 at Hingham, Plymouth Co., MA.

     Ruth Ann James was born on 17 October 1922 at Newark, Licking Co., OH.¹ She was the daughter of Lewis R. James and Mary Edna Ashton.¹ Ruth Ann James married William Ernest Harris, son of Ernest Stanley Harris and Mabel Marie Warrick, on 30 July 1942 at Licking Co., OH. Ruth Ann James died on 13 January 2011 at Newark, Licking Co., OH, at age 88 Dates per SSDI. She was buried in January 2011 at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Newark, Licking Co., OH, Find A Grave Memorial# 112129749.

     Sarah A. James was born on 6 May 1836 at Scioto Co., OH. She was the daughter of Jonathan James and Phebe Roberts. Sarah A. James married Dr. Jacob Hillyard Windle, son of Nicholas Hetrick Windle and Catherine Hillyard. Sarah A. James died on 28 November 1903 at Rarden, Scioto Co., OH, at age 67.

     Thelma James was born circa 1899 at Virginia.¹ She married Whitney M. Wells.
