Pioneer Woman Dentist Is Dead
Dr. Edith Jewell Garrels Succumbs at Home in Arlington County
Dr. Edith Jewell Garrels, said to be one of the first women to practice dentistry in the District, died yesterday at her residence, Dawson Terrace, Mackeys Hill, Arlington County, Virginia.

Friends of Mrs. Garrels said that she was the first woman to be graduated in dentistry from any of the medical schools in Washington. She received her degree from the Medical School of the old Columbian College, now George Washington University in 1899. She was a member of the Gunton Temple Christian Church and the Woman's Christian Temperance Union.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the S.H. Hines Funeral Parlors, 2910 Fourteenth Street Northwest. The Rev. Barnard Baskamp, pastor of Gunton Temple Presbyterian Church will officiate. Burial will be private at Oak Hill Cemetery.

     L. A. Jewett was born circa 1822 at Ohio.¹ He married Eliza Ann (?). L. A. Jewett died before 24 June 1870.

     Abel Jewitt was born on 22 February 1834 at Litchfield, Medina Co., OH.¹ He married Mary Eliza Jane Warren on 25 February 1855 at Jones Co., IA.      Dr. Dale Brice Jillson was born on 9 August 1927 at Elgin, Antelope Co., NE. He was the son of Dr. Paul Myron Jillson and Juanita Jerrene Bartlett. Dr. Dale Brice Jillson was graduated in 1953 at Iowa State University, Ames, Story Co., IA; DVM. He married Virginia Ruth Taylor, daughter of Lyle Dearborn Taylor and Beatrice Salena Talley, on 11 September 1955 at Harlan, Pottawattamie Co., IA. Occupation: Veterinarian. Dr. Dale Brice Jillson, DVM, of Elgin, Nebraska, passed away Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at the Eastern Nebraska Veterans Home in Bellevue, Nebraska. Dale, son of Dr. Paul M. and Juanita (Bartlett) Jillson, was born August 9, 1927 at Elgin, Nebraska.

Dale attended Elgin Public (NE.) High School, lettering in football and basketball, graduating with the class of 1945. He served his country in the Army Air Corps before attending college at University of Nebraska and graduating from Iowa State in 1953 with a degree in Veterinary Science.

Dale married Virginia Taylor on September 11, 1955 in Harlan, Iowa. After a few years living in Neligh, Nebraska, they moved in 1961 to his home community of Elgin. He served his community as a veterinarian for 43 years before retiring in 1997. He considered himself a lifelong resident of Elgin, Nebraska.

In the early years he served as a school board member and assisted with community celebrations. He also contributed as a volunteer fire fighter and chaired the Ice Cream Social for many years. A member of the United Methodist Church, he served on various committees throughout the years. He was a longtime member of the Masonic Diamond Lodge #291 A.M. and F.M. He was an avid sports enthusiast following Elgin and Nebraska sports. Dale was a devoted husband and father.

Dale is survived by: daughters, Kathryn Jillson and husband Steve Cook of Strongsville, Ohio, Kristine Boyer and husband Ray of Salina, Kansas, Elizabeth Jillson-Clark and husband Roger of Lincoln, Nebraska and Mary Jillson and husband James Heesacker of LaVista, Nebraska eight grandchildren; one great-grandson; brothers-in-law: Kenneth D. Bennett of Elgin, Nebraska and Dwight (Darlene) Taylor of St. Charles, Missouri; sisters-in-law: Lucille Jillson of Lincoln, Nebraska and Shari Jillson of Des Moines, Iowa and a host relatives and friends.

Dale was preceded in death by: parents; wife, Virginia Jillson in 2004; brothers, Ted, Paul and Gene Jillson and sister, Jerrene Bennett.

Interment was in the West Cedar Valley Cemetery, Elgin, Nebraska with military rites by American Legion Post #229 and VFW Post #5816 of Elgin, Nebraska.

     Douglas C. Jillson was born on 4 June 1878 at Marion Co. (probably), IN.¹ He was the son of William M. Jillson and Mary Cook Clippinger.¹ Douglas C. Jillson married Helen Dickinson Ballard on 24 April 1903 at Marion Co., IN. Douglas C. Jillson lived on 15 April 1910 at 1424 North Delaware Street, Indianapolis, Marion Co., IN, in his father's household, clerk in his father's railway supply company.² He died on 4 February 1961 at Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis, Marion Co., IN, at age 82.

     Gene Brice Jillson was born on 4 August 1930 at Elgin, Antelope Co., NE. He was the son of Dr. Paul Myron Jillson and Juanita Jerrene Bartlett. Gene Brice Jillson began military service U.S. Air Force, SSgt. He died on 15 May 1998 at West Des Moines, Polk Co., IA, at age 67. He was buried in May 1998 at Resthaven Cemetery, West Des Moines, Polk Co., IA.

     Jerrene Joyce Jillson was born on 3 May 1924 at Elgin, Antelope Co., NE. She was the daughter of Dr. Paul Myron Jillson and Juanita Jerrene Bartlett. Jerrene Joyce Jillson married Kenneth Dale Bennett, son of William Harrison Bennett and Alma Petersen, on 23 March 1947 at Presbyterian Church, Elgin, Antelope Co., NE. Jerrene Joyce Jillson died on 9 May 2011 at Battle Creek, Madison Co., NE, at age 87 Obituary (findagrave.com):

Jerrene Joyce Bennett, daughter of Dr. Paul M. and Juanita (Bartlett) Jillson, was born May 3, 1924 at Elgin, NE. She attended Elgin Public Schools, graduated from Elgin High School in 1942, and taught country school for a year, riding a horse to school. She then furthered her education at Midland College in Fremont and graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Nursing in 1946 as a Registered Nurse.

On March 23, 1947, Jerrene was united in marriage with Kenneth D. Bennett at the Presbyterian Church in Elgin, NE. The couple lived in Pensacola, FL for five months until Kenneth was honorably discharged from the service. They returned to Nebraska and made there home in Elgin, NE. Jerrene worked as a registered nurse for 20 years in nursing homes in Neligh and Tilden.

Jerrene was an Admiral of the Nebraska Navy, a devoted volunteer at the Red Cross Blood Drives, an original and long-term member of the Elgin EMT's, and worked for more than 10 years as the head nurse at the "Girls' State" event. Jerrene was extremely involved in the republican party; both at the state and national levels. Jerrene enjoyed her work, her volunteerism, her family and playing Bridge.

Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Kenneth Bennett of Elgin, NE; two sons: Michael Bennett and his wife Peggy of Kennesaw, GA; William P. Bennett, Sr and wife JoAnne of Papillion, NE; six grandchildren: Michelle (Bryan) Howley; Christopher Bennett; Courtney S. (Schyler) Fricke; William "Paul" Bennett Jr. and fiancé Allison Leapley; Whitney A. Bennett; Matthew H. Bennett; one great-granddaughter: Brooklynn Howley; and one brother: Dr. Dale Jillson of Elgin, NE.

Jerrene was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers: Ted, Paul and Gene Jillson.
