Obituary:

Henderson -The funeral for J. Aiken Montague, 91, a former teacher, principal and board of education president of Henderson schools, as well as justice of the peace, farmer and fishing guide who died at 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 13, at the Jefferson County hospital, Watertown, where he had been a patient nine days. His funeral was at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Henderson Universalist church. Burial was in Evergreen cemetery, Roberts Corners. Officers of Bayview lodge 905, F. & A. M., Henderson, conducted a Masonic memorial service at 8 p.m. at, the Carpenter-Stoodley funeral home.

Mr. Montague is survived by a son, Dr. Terry S. Montague, Henderson, superintendent of Jefferson county hospital; a grandson, Capt. Leonard A. Montague, stationed at Plattsburgh Air Force Base; a granddaughter, Mrs. Martin (Ann) Maurer, Baldwinsville, and five great-grandchildren.

Mr. Montague was born November 25, 1871, son of Thomas D. and Edwina Fuller Montague. He was a descendant of one of Henderson's pioneer families. His grandfather, also named J. Aiken Montague, came here in 1815 from Pawlet, Vt.

He married Miss Harriette A. Terry on February 21, 1901, at the Henderson Universalist church, with Rev. George Adams, pastor, officiating. She died October 16, 1961.

Mr. Montague was graduated from Belleville Union academy in 1892. His first teaching position was in a Henderson district school. He later taught at Ellisburg and the old Northern Business school, Watertown.

After a short stay at Chaumont, where he was a bookkeeper and stenographer, he resumed teaching in Henderson district schools. In January, 1899, he rejoined the Henderson village faculty and was active in a movement which resulted in converting that school into a Union Free unit, with a state regents charter.

He was the first principal or the Union Free School and after six years, assumed the same position at the LaFargeville Union Free School.

In 1908 he returned to Henderson, left teaching and purchased the old Seaton homestead. His career then involved farming, carpentry, raising sheep on Stony Island and serving as a mail carrier and fishing guide. During later years he was also a justice of the peace.

Mr. Montague kept in close touch with the local educational situation and was a school board member for years. He led the move to merge the village district and 12 rural units into Henderson Central School, and was the first president of the centralized board of education from 1931 to 1941.

In March, 1944, when the principal post at the local school became vacant with the resignation of Roger W. Bancroft, who accepted a teaching position in Orange county, Mr. Montague took over the job, although he was in his 70's and had been inactive as a teacher for 36 years.

He had been a member of the Henderson Universalist church, the grange and local Masonic organizations. He was buried on 16 February 1963 at Evergreen Cemetery, Roberts Corners, Jefferson Co., NY.
