Knowles Divorce Decree Is Signed

A final decree has been signed in district court granting Shirley Jean Knowles a divorce from Gordon Nummer Knowles on the grounds of cruelty.

She was awarded all of the household effects, except for a television set, which, along with a 1940 automobile, was awarded to Knowles. He was ordered to settle an account owed by the couple at a clinic.

Another provision of the decree was that she return a diamond ring given her at the time of their engagement.

Momence; his father of Bourbonnais; one sister and brother-in-law, Louise and Dave Routien of Bourbonnais; 19 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mr. Knowles had retired from Momence Packing Company in 1995 and he had operated Knowles Plants in Momence.

He was a member of AARP. He enjoyed HO Model Trains and wood carving.

     Leslie Watkins Knowles was born on 14 September 1901 at Lawrence, Essex Co., MA. He married Frieda Nummer. Leslie Watkins Knowles died on 29 May 2002 at age 100.

     Mary Knowles was born circa 1903 at Illinois. She married Charles Henry Dasenbrook Jr., son of Charles H. Dasenbrook and Helen Spain, circa 1917.¹

     Cynthia Knowlton was born on 28 November 1799 at Phillipston, Worcester Co., MA. She married Jason Goulding on 3 November 1829 at Worcester Co., MA. Cynthia Knowlton died on 23 January 1845 at age 45.

     Betsey Knox was born in 1782. She married Lt. Sylvenus Mitchell. Betsey Knox died in 1851 at Knox Co., OH.

Last Tuesday evening the 4th at 6:30 o'clock, Miss Clara Knox was united in marriage to Mr. Elmer Duebbert at the splendid Knox home south of town. With Miss Geneva Ellis at the Piano, the young couple was escorted into the lighted parlor by Mr. Frank Knox and Miss Martha Powell, where Rev. Arbuthnot performed the ceremony using the ring service. Rev Arbuthnot introduced the ceremony with appropriate remarks that seemed to drive the usual tenseness of such occasions. Elmer and bride drove to town and left on the evening train for a short stay. They will reside in Mexico Missouri, where Elmer has a position with the Pollock Milling Company. Miss Clara is the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Knox and the good wishes of our community go out to her and Elmer in their new relationship.

     David Franklin Knox was born on 28 October 1826. He was the son of William Knox and Sarah Clark. David Franklin Knox married Catherine DaVault, daughter of Peter Davault and Mary Virginia Hoss, in 1858 at New Florence, Montgomery Co., MO. Occupation: At one time David was Sheriff of Montgomery Co., and he appointed his brother-in-law, Alf Davault, as his deputy. David F. Knox, eldest son of William & Sarah (Clark) Knox, owns some 1300 acres and has one of the choice stock farms of the township, a handsome place of some 400 acres near New Florence where he has lived since about the time of his marriage in 1858. He held office of sheriff for three terms 1856 - 1858 - 1870, the 1st anti-radical sheriff of the county after the war, member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, died in 1875. (last date is not correct.)

He was buried in August 1888 at New Florence Cemetery, New Florence, Montgomery Co., MO.

     David Franklin Knox was born on 11 September 1891 at New Florence, Montgomery Co., MO. He was the son of William Henry Knox and Nellie Irene Bordeaux. David Franklin Knox married Martha Virginia Powell, daughter of William Lewis Powell and Margaret Ellen Vogt, on 22 October 1919 at New Florence, Montgomery Co., MO, no children. David Franklin Knox died on 11 December 1976 at age 85. He was buried in December 1976 at New Florence Cemetery, New Florence, Montgomery Co., MO.

     Hale Talbert Knox was born on 8 November 1898. He was the son of John Upton Knox and Honora Estrella Hunter. Hale Talbert Knox died in January 1964 at age 65.

     John Upton Knox was born on 19 May 1872 at New Florence, Montgomery Co., MO. He was the son of David Franklin Knox and Catherine DaVault. John Upton Knox was graduated at University of Missouri, Columbia, Boone Co., MO. He married Honora Estrella Hunter, daughter of Benjamin F. Hunter and Amy A. Larkin, on 16 May 1894 at St. Joseph, Buchanan Co., MO. Occupation: Livestock and horse breeder, later sold fire insurance.

John U. Knox Dies At His Home Sunday

John Upton Knox, 74, well known farmer and son of one of Montgomery County's pioneer settlers died Sunday morning at his home one mile west of New Florence after a short illness.
He had been under the care of a doctor for the past two weeks and was believed to be improving when he was found seriously ill Sunday morning by Albert Hahn. A doctor was called, but he died a short time after.
His grandfather, the late David F Knox was one of the pioneer settlers of Montgomery County. He settled near the present site of New Florence in 1818 after moving west from Kentucky. He was married to Sarah Clark of Kentucky and they reared five children.
The youngest of the children, David R. Knox, married Miss Catherine Davault, a member of another pioneer family. To this union four children were born, Sarah l., William H., Mary Lula, and John Upton, who was born May 19, 1872. The other three preceded J. U. in death.
His early childhood was spent with his parents at their farm near New Florence. He later attended Missouri University. He later was in business in St. Joseph, Mo., for two years. While at St. Joseph he met and married Miss Honorah Hunter, of Taris (sic), Ill., on May 16, 1894.
They then moved to their home on the site of the historical Davault Tavern one mile south of New Florence where thay lived for the remainder of their lives. Their homesite is marked by a DAR marker as one of the historical places of Missouri.
Mr. and Mrs. Knox adopted Miss Martha Talbot, now Mrs. Thos. Farnen of Warrenton, when she was a child and she has been as a daughter to them through the years.
Mr. Knox was for many years a breeder of fine horses some of his stock being prize winners in horseshows throughout this middle west. He had however gone out of the stock breeding business.
He was an ardent football fan and was able to see one Missouri University game this fall.
He was one of the leaders in farm improvement and work in this county and devoted much time toward the betterment of farm condition in this county.
He was a member of the Methodist church, the MWA and numerous other organizations. For many years he had been a representative of the Montgomery County Mutual Fire Insurance Company.
Funeral services were from the home Tuesday afternoon by Rev. M. T. Workman. Interment was in the Jonesburg Catholic cemetery.
His passing marks the departure of one of the county's widely known men. His friends were many and his name respected wherever he was known.
This newspaper extends sympathy to the bereaved daughter and the other relatives in his passing.

     Mary Louise Knox was also known as "Lula". She was born on 20 May 1865. She was the daughter of David Franklin Knox and Catherine DaVault. Mary Louise Knox married Elden M. Goss, son of George W. Goss and Susan C. (?), on 23 October 1890 at New Florence, Montgomery Co., MO. Mary Louise Knox lived at San Jose, Santa Clara Co., CA. She died on 10 June 1944 at Santa Clara Co., CA, at age 79.

     Sarah B. Knox was also known as "Sallie". She was born on 27 February 1861. She was the daughter of David Franklin Knox and Catherine DaVault. Sarah B. Knox died on 18 March 1885 at age 24. She was buried in March 1885.

     Sarah E. Knox was born in October 1854 at Ohio.¹ She married Robert W. Wilson circa 1870.¹ Sarah E. Knox lived on 9 April 1930 at 3843 South Flower Drive, Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., CA.² She died after April 1930.

     William Knox married Sarah Clark.

     William Henry Knox was born on 1 January 1863 at New Florence, Montgomery Co., MO. He was the son of David Franklin Knox and Catherine DaVault. William Henry Knox married Nellie Irene Bordeaux, daughter of Edward Bordeaux and Martha Kelly, on 23 October 1890 at New Florence, Montgomery Co., MO. William Henry Knox died on 25 August 1944 at New Florence, Montgomery Co., MO, at age 81 OBITUARY:

William Henry Knox, son of David Franklin Knox and Catherine Davault Knox was born near New Florence, Missouri, January 1, 1863, and departed this life at his birthplace on August 25, 1944, at the age of 81 years, 7 months and 24 days.
On October 23, 1890, he was united in marriage to Miss Nellie Bordeaux. To this union three children were born -- David Franklin of New Florence; Clara Louise, now Mrs. E. H. Duebbert of New Florence; and William Henry, Jr., of St. Louis, Missouri.
Besides his devoted wife and children he leaves to mourn his departure three grandchildren Dorothy Louise Duebbert, Mildren Knox Duebbert, and Jimmy Knox all of St. Louis, Missouri; one brother, J. U. Knox of New Florence; three nieces, Edna Louise Goss, Georgia Knox Goss, and Mildren Knox Goss of San Jose, Calif; one nephew Eldon L. Goss of Oakland, California; and many other relatives and friends.
For over fifty years Mr. Knox was a member of Florence Lodge, No. 261, A. F. & A. M. He was also a member of Triune Chapter, No 93 Royal Arch Masons of Wellsville, Missouri, and Centralia Council, No. 34 Royal and Select Masters of Centralia, Missouri. He was a charter member of the New Florence Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, acting as the chapter's first patron.
Mr. Knox, a representative of one of the pioneer families of the county, was at the same time a man who by his own exertions and merits placed himself among the leading successful farmers of the county. In the absence of his father from ill health, he undertook the entire management of several farms when he was quite young to assume such responsibility. From that time until his death he was actively engaged in farming. The general esteem in which he was held was the result of his high character, his many estimable qualities as a neighbor, and his well-known integrity and upright life. The warmth of his hospitality will always be remembered by the many persons who visited in his home.
Thus ends a fruitful life that may serve as an example to the generations which follow him.

Funeral services were held at the home Sunday afternoon, at 2:30 o'clock conducted by Rev. Paul C. Paschal, who paid a very beautiful tribute to the memory of the deceased. Burial was in New Florence Cemetery. Services at the grave were conducted by the Masons. The floral tributes were very beautiful and profuse attesting the esteem in which he was held.

     George Knudson married Cornelia Peterson.

     Leo Van Knudson was born on 12 August 1910. He was the son of Knudt Knudtsen and Annie (?)¹ Leo Van Knudson married Nellie Lucille Windle, daughter of William Windle and Bertha Irene Phelps, on 11 August 1934 at Dakota City, Dakota Co., NE. Leo Van Knudson died on 13 November 1984 at age 74. He was buried in November 1984 at Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City, Woodbury Co., IA.

     Wendell Samuel Knudson was born on 9 April 1914 at Morris, Grundy, IL. He was the son of George Knudson and Cornelia Peterson. Wendell Samuel Knudson married Reva Irene Hawn, daughter of Dennis Valley Hawn and Mary Kathryn Sturdevant, on 25 December 1938. Wendall began farming in Kendall County, was owner of the Knudson Real Estate Agency but was best known for 45 years as Joliet's Premier Auctioneer. His memberships in organizations and churches include Joliet Grade School and High School Band Parents, Joliet Exchange Club, Matteson Lodge No. 175, A.F.&A.M: and Chapter Dad of Swordsman Chapter Order of DeMolay, Medinah Temple-Chicago, Grace United Methodist Church and former member of Ottawa Street United Methodist Church.
Wendall was a lover of people. He always reached out-his hand and was the first to greet every person, he met with a hand shake and a smile. He enjoyed talking to people.
Family will receive friends Sunday, April 16, 2000 at the Blackburn-Giegerich-Sonntag Funeral Home from 3-8 p.m. with Masonic Memorial Service at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held Monday, April 17, 2000 at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Barbara Donica officiating. Interment Aux Sable Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to Trinity Services would, be appreciated.
