Margaret DeVault
Margaret Masengill DeVault was born in 1914 to attorney Charles H. Masengill and Sara Akard Masengill in Blountville, Tenn. She received a two-year degree from Virginia Intermont College in Bristol and a four-year degree from King College. Margaret had the highest grade point average of her graduating class at King College and was also selected the College's May Queen.
In 1939, Margaret married Chauncey DeVault, who had played football at Kingsport's Dobyns-Bennett High School and had captained Emory & Henry College's football team. As Chauncey matriculated for his master's degree at Columbia University and received specialized naval training at Princeton University, he and Margaret temporarily relocated to New York City and then to Princeton, N.J. Margaret lived with her parents in Blountville while Chauncey served as a naval officer in the Pacific theater during World War II.
Margaret and Chauncey are survived by three children; daughter, Meredith DeVault Pence resides in Nashville, Tenn., with her husband Ken and their two children, Charlton DeVault Pence and Meredith Masengill Pence. Meredith is a senior counsel to the Tennessee Attorney General and her husband Ken is a professor at Vanderbilt University; son, Merle Masengill DeVault is retired from his management position at Levi-Strauss and continues to live in San Francisco; and son, Charlton R. DeVault Jr. practices law in Kingsport, Tenn.
Growing up, Margaret's three children listened in amazement as their mother recounted episodes of her sojourn in the northeast, described her naive walks through New York's Harlem district and Central Park, her rides on the city's subway system, and told them about her acquaintance with Albert Einstein at Princeton. Margaret's memories of her repeated trips from Bristol to San Francisco on troop trains to see Chauncey after his ship had docked for leave are bittersweet. She had to watch from the Golden Gate Bridge as her husband sailed back out to war.
Margaret taught mathematics and geometry at Blountville High School before moving to Bristol with her husband. Chauncey had coached at Appalachia Virginia High School and Virginia High School and had been principal of Virginia High School immediately before the war. In 1945, Chauncey and Margaret opened DeVault's Sporting Goods Store in Bristol Virginia. Chauncey operated the store and also served as president of Major League Baseball's Appalachian Rookie League until his death in 1980.
After her youngest child was of school age, Margaret began teaching the fifth grade at Fairmount Elementary School in Bristol Tennessee. During the mid-1960s Margaret transferred to Vance Junior High School, where she taught mathematics until she retired in 1979. Margaret was active in various State Street United Methodist Church circles and classes, in local Bristol book clubs and in the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Margaret also served her community as a member of the Bristol Charter Review Committee and the Bristol Planning Commission. In 1982, Margaret was elected to the Sullivan County Commission, where she represented her Bristol constituency and the entire county for 12 years. In addition to chairing the county's administrative committee and serving on various other committees, Margaret chaired specially designated justice center committees which promoted, co-ordinated, planned and monitored the construction of the Kingsport Justice Center and the Sullivan County Justice Center in Blountville, Tenn. Her justice center committee also initiated the planning for the City County building in Bristol.
At the time of her death on Wednesday, April 29, 2009, Margaret was residing at The Oaks in Kingsport, Tenn.
The memorial service for Mrs. DeVault will be held at 3 o'clock Saturday, May 2, 2009, at State Street United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Mike Jackson officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. The committal service will be at 3 o'clock Sunday, May 3, 2009, in Glenwood Cemetery.
In memoriam, the family requests that contributions be made to the State Street United Methodist Church, 300 W. Valley Drive, Bristol, VA 24201. Condolences and memories may be sent to and viewed by visiting www.oakley-cook.com.
Mrs. DeVault and her family are in the care of Oakley Cook Funeral Home and Crematory.

Newspaper article:

Long-time Sullivan County officials are mourning the loss of one of their own this week, following the death Wednesday of Margaret Massengill DeVault.
A memorial service is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday at the State Street Methodist Church.
DeVault represented the city of Bristol on the Sullivan County Commission from 1982 to 1994. She also taught fifth-grade classes at Fairmount Elementary School and math at Vance Middle School before retiring in 1979.
“She was just an exceptional commissioner,” said County Commissioner John McKamey of Piney Flats. “She served on the commission just like she taught school. She did everything by the book.”
McKamey said he worked side-by-side with DeVault when she served on the commission. They were especially tight at the end of her tenure when McKamey served as county executive and DeVault chaired the commission’s Administrative Committee.
In addition to her duties with that committee, DeVault headed up the commission’s justice center committees, which played a role in designing and building the Kingsport and Blountville Justice Centers.
“She stayed on top of everything,” McKamey said. “Her mind was as sharp as a tack.”
DeVault was 94 at the time of her death and is survived by three children: Meredith Pence, Merle DeVault and Charlton DeVault.

She was buried in May 2009 at Glenwood Cemetery, Bristol, Sullivan Co., TN.

Obituary -- Fort Worth Star-Telegram; Fort Worth, Texas; Sunday, May 12, 2013; Page 59 (GenealogyBank.com)

ARLINGTON -- Harry Naill Mason passed away Monday, May 6, 2013.
Harry was born in New York City with a double cleft lip and a cleft palate. He needed emergency surgery upon birth to breathe and eat. Over the years, having many surgeries, he became tough yet sensitive to the needs of others. Growing up in the Bronx projects with a physical deformity and a single mother, he learned to be tough, yet always sensitive to the needs of the less fortunate.
He left home at a young age, made his way first on offshore oil rigs where he quickly advanced to the top and acquired his position as a driller, and then as manager of a Texas communications tower company, Trico Tower Service. For the past 20 years, Harry put all his focus and energy into raising his one and only son, Nathan Mason, and going to work no matter how he felt. Despite serious medical conditions, he continued to work. Although he did not need to climb towers, he did so as early (sic) as a month ago.
Harry will be remembered by his loved ones as being generous, loyal, dedicated to his family and, yes, difficult and grumpy at times, but who could blame him. He left us too soon, at 59. He will be missed immensely and remembered always.
He was preceded in death by his father, Nathaniel Mason; and his mother, Mary Naill.
SURVIVORS: His son, Nathaniel Riley Mason of Arlington; sisters, Jennifer Mason Zurowski of Hobe Sound, Fla., Dovia Jenna Mason Fehrenbach of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Linda Duswalt Ciangetti of Manahawkin, N.J; brother, Steven Duswalt of Austin; nephews Matt Reece, Cliff Reece and Eric Scroggins; and nieces Alannahg Mason and Stephanie Duswalt.
