Dr. James H. Ashabranner, 75, widely known in medical and literary circles of the city for many years, died at 10:30 o'clock Wednesday night in St. Edward's Hospital from a heart ailment. He had been confined to the institution since January, 1932.
Dr. Ashabranner, who began the practice of medicine thirty-seven years ago, was graduated from the Electic medical College of Cincinnati in 1899. He located in New Albany and later removed to Los Angeles, where he remained only a short time. He returned to this city and continued his profession until he was stricken ill.
A native of Clark county, Dr. Ashabranner was born and reared in the vicinity of "Dead Man's Hollow." He received his early education in that county and also attended a college in Marengo, then known for it's high standing as an educational center.
For a number of years, Dr. Ashabranner served as secretary of the old Y. M. C. A. and also had charge of its library, which was the forerunner of the Public library made possible through the Carnegie Foundation. He became the first librarian in the new building at Bank and Spring streets.
Dr. Ashabranner joined the Floyd County Medical society sixteen years ago and was a former vice president of the organization. He was one of the founders of LaBelle Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, and served as its first worthy patron. He was also a member of DePauw Lodge of Masons and of the Trinity M. E. Church. Dr. Ashabranner and his wife, who died several years ago, were active in church work, taking prominent roles in musical programs.
Dr. Ashabranner enjoyed unusual literary talent and his work was recognized by nationally known magazines which published his contributions. His local contributions which were made exclusively to The Tribune, included chiefly poems on timely subjects.
He wrote frequently during the time he was confined to his bed in the hospital. His last poem, which appeared in this publication several weeks ago, entitled "Woman," was dedicated to Helen Louise Probert, chosen "Miss New Albany" in a bathing beauty contest.
Dr. Ashabranner traveled extensively. A few years ago he made a trip to Hawaii.
Surviving are a number of nephews and nieces.
The body is at the Mullineaux Chapel, Spring and Thirteenth streets, where funeral services will be conducted at 3 o'clock Friday afternoon. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.
