Leota Payne
     Leota Lucille Payne, age 75, of Salem, died Saturday, Nov. 30, 1991, at 11:39 a.m. at Washington County Memorial Hospital in Salem.
     She was a life resident of Washington County, and vice-president of old Morris Payne Farm Implement Company of Salem. She was a member of Olive Branch Primitive Baptist Church and Sweet Adeline Singing Group.
     Mrs. Payne was born April 27, 1916, in Pekin, to Edgar and Della Brown Leonard. She married Morris A. Payne May 16, 1934.
     Survivors are two daughters, Helen June Schwein of Pittsboro, Indiana, and Sandra F. Day, of Salem; a son, Bernard G. Payne of Salem; a brother, Marvin E. Leonard of Pekin; a half-sister, Imogene Tarr of Franklin, Indiana; a half-brother, Herman Hobson of Pekin; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
     Joint funeral services with her husband will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, at Dawalt Funeral Home in Salem with Elder Lloyd Chastain officiating. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery in Pekin. Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

She was buried in December 1991 at Olive Branch Cemetery, Polk Twp., Washington Co., IN.

     Margaret Marie Leonard was born on 13 January 1910 at Waterloo, Black Hawk Co., IA. She married John Raynor Beard in 1937. Leopold married Emma Davis, daughter of William Davis and Sarah Cook, on 24 January 1880, Ceremony by Rev. George S. Sorber.¹ Edgar A. Leopold died on 13 June 1913 at age 63.¹

     Elizabeth W. Leopold was born on 21 August 1873 at Pennsylvania.^1,2 She was the daughter of Howard Leopold and Annie C. Streeper.¹ Elizabeth W. Leopold married Hon. Newton Diehl Baker, son of Dr. Newton Diehl Baker Sr. and Mary Ann Dukehart, on 5 July 1902, Ceremony by Rev. H. M. Dykeman.¹ Elizabeth W. Leopold lived in April 1910 at 1863 Crawford Road N.E., Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., OH.² She died on 24 August 1951 at Shaker Heights, Cuyahoga Co., OH, at age 78.      Elwood H. Leopold was born on 17 February 1853 at Pennsylvania.¹ He was the son of Jonas Leopold and Anne Price.¹ Elwood H.      Frank L. Leopold was the son of Charles F. Leopold and Louisa L. (?) Frank L. Leopold married Elizabeth W. Pusey, daughter of Samuel W. Pusey and Sarah A. Sill, on 5 May 1886 at Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., PA.

     Grace Leopold was born on 16 October 1881.¹ She was the daughter of Edgar A. Leopold and Emma Davis.¹ Grace Leopold married Alvin M. Reinhold, son of Albert H. Reinhold and Sarah (?), on 20 December 1902, Ceremony by Rev. Ernest Pfatticker.¹

     Howard Leopold was born on 3 April 1849 at Pennsylvania.¹ He was the son of Jonas Leopold and Anne Price.¹ Howard Leopold married Annie C. Streeper, daughter of Jacob Dewees Streeper and Elizabeth J. Wells, on 31 October 1872, Ceremony by Rev. J. C. Thompson.¹ Occupation: Mr. Leopold acquired a normal school education and began teaching when 16 years old. Was in the Dry Goods business and manufacture of women's suits for fifty years, in which time he employed one thousand girls. He was Chairman of the Montg. Co. Prohibition Committee for over forty years; was always in demand as a singer and speaker in campaigns for prohibition and woman suffrage.¹

Stiel and Juliana Schryver, on 3 July 1924.¹ Howard Leopold lived at 67 North Franklin Street, Pottstown, Montgomery Co., PA.¹ He was Presbyterian.¹ He died on 11 March 1931 at Pottstown, Montgomery Co., PA, at age 81.      Jonas Leopold was born on 4 August 1820 at Pennsylvania.¹ He was the son of Joseph Leopold and Sarah Zimmerman.¹ Jonas Leopold married Anne Price, daughter of Rev. John Price and Mary Rinehart, on 14 March 1843.¹ Occupation: Jonas Leopold was a well-known farmer in East Coventry, Chester Co., Pa; he resided on the farm where he died, for fifty years; was active in educational and church work; served for a number of years as a School Director; was a school teacher for twenty-six years and for a long time was superintendent of the Sunday school of the Coventry Brethren Church.¹

Jonas Leopold died on 7 February 1907 at age 86.¹

     Joseph Leopold was the son of John Lubold and Elizabeth Reifsnyder.¹ Joseph Leopold married Sarah Zimmerman.¹

Josephine Leopold Davis Josephine Leopold Davis died peacefully on Tuesday, October 7, 2014, at Westminster Canterbury in Richmond, Virginia.

The daughter of Henrietta Schumann and Joseph Leopold, she was born in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and raised in Milton, Pennsylvania.

She enjoyed a wonderful marriage to Gustavus Morris Schwarzschild Jr. for over 40 years, until his death in 1980. In 1985, she married Ralph Oliver Davis and enjoyed another almost 20 years with him until his death in 2004. Jo lived in Staunton from the 1940's until she moved to Richmond in 2005.

Jo is survived by one daughter, Jane L. Shackelford and her husband, V. R. III; one grandson, V. Randolph Shackelford IV and his wife, Katrina; and one great-grandson, V. R. Shackelford V. She also had three step-children, one of whom predeceased her, three step-granddaughters and four step-great-granddaughters.

Jo graduated as co-valedictorian of her class from Milton High School, and she attended Goucher College. Jo had a contagious enthusiasm for life and was a multi-talented person with a wide range of interests and friends. With her impeccable taste and sense of style, she did most of the New York buying for Schwarzschild's, Inc., a women's specialty store in Staunton, that she owned and ran with Gus for over 30 years. She was something of a fashion icon in Staunton, totally comfortable in a sophisticated outfit from an avant-garde designer in New York one minute and her lucky golf attire in another. An accomplished golfer, she won numerous tournaments over five decades, playing mostly at Augusta Country Club, Country Club of Staunton and Spanish Wells Club in Hilton Head.

Her skill and love of the game earned her a position on the executive board of the VSGA, Women's Division, and also led to a spot on the People-to-People Golf Team, a quasi-ambassadorial program for the United States started by President Eisenhower, where she played foreign teams on renown courses in Spain, France, Ireland and Scotland.

As a young lady, Jo was a dancer and a pianist, and she graduated from the Bucknell University School of Music; she continued to play the piano for friends and enlivened many a Staunton party with her renditions. Having graduated from the National School of Fine Arts in D.C. and studied under Horace Day in Staunton, and Lois Dickensheets, Pat Lusk and others in Hilton Head, she was an excellent painter and had a deep interest in art. She was a member of Staunton Fine Arts and the Hilton Head Art League, a group with which Ralph and she took several interesting trips. In her retirement, she took great delight in bridge and her many bridge groups in Staunton, Hilton Head and Richmond, enjoying trips to tournaments along the East Coast with some of these friends.

Her interest in plants was evidenced by her having Charles Gillette design her Staunton garden, by the vases of her roses that she took to almost everyone she visited, and by her membership in the Rose Society. Jo was a creative and gracious hostess and a terrific cook, enjoying, but rarely needing, any of the bookshelves of cookbooks she collected. And throughout all of this, she was a loyal and dear friend to many, a devoted wife to two husbands who adored her, and an exceptionally dedicated and loving mother and grandmother to a daughter and grandson who cherish her memory.

The family appreciates the excellent help provided by her caregivers, including Brittney Hawkins, Joan Nave, Ayana Thompson and the team from Bon Secours Hospice. Burial was private. A memorial service will be held at a date to be determined.

Leopold began military service WW1 commissioned as 1st Lt. and later Captain, Army Engineer Corps.¹ He was born on 13 October 1876 at Pottstown, Montgomery Co., PA.¹ He was the son of Howard Leopold and Annie C. Streeper.¹ Leroy S. Leopold lived in 1926 at 1858 Columbia Road, Washington, D.C., Engaged in the U.S. Geological Survey Dept.¹ He died on 9 October 1953 at Accomack Co., VA, at age 76. Presented concerts in many of the leading cities of the U.S.¹ Ralph Herman Leopold was born on 14 February 1884.¹ He was the son of Howard Leopold and Annie C.      Sarah Leopold was born on 31 August 1883.¹ She was the daughter of Edgar A. Leopold and Emma Davis.¹ Sarah Leopold married Fred A. Spring, son of John Spring and Emma (?), on 1 September 1908, Ceremony by Rev. Geo. A. Kercher.¹

     Charlotte Leppla was born on 20 January 1836 at Oberweiler-Tiefenbach, Palatinate. Charlotte Leppla died on 18 January 1878 at Quirnbach bei Kusel, Palatinate, Germany, at age 41.
