Hon. Newton D. Baker1

M, b. 3 December 1871
Hon. Newton D. Baker was born on 3 December 1871 at Martinsburg, Berkeley Co., WV.1,2 He was the son of Dr. Newton D. Baker and Mary Dukehart.1 Hon. Newton D. Baker married Elizabeth W. Leopold, daughter of Howard Leopold and Annie C. Streeper, on 5 July 1902, Ceremony by Rev. H. M. Dykeman.1 Occupation: Mr. Baker has received degrees at Johns Hopkins and Washington and Lee Universities; at the age of 25 was appointed private secretary to Postmaster General Wilson in President Cleveland's cabinet. Removing to Cleveland, Ohio, he practiced law and in 1902 became City Solicitor, which position he held for 10 years until his election as Mayor; reelected, 1914. At the time of the Baltimore convention, when Woodrow Wilson was nominated for the Presidency, Mr. Baker was prominently mentioned for the Vice-Presidency because of the fight he made in support of Mr. Wilson. He was known as the original Wilson man in Ohio. At the time fo the Convention in 1912, Ex-Gov. Judson Harman was a candidate for the Presidential nomination and controlled a majority of the Buckeye delegation, but Baker was for Wilson, and swung with him a number of the northern Ohio delegates. The successful fight which he personally led on the floor of the convention to prevent the adoption of the unit rule, saved these Ohio votes to Wilson and did much to make possible his nomination.
As a lawyer, Mr. Baker was long regarded as a leader of the Ohio Bar and Mr. Wilson, regarding him as such, appointed him as Secretary of War, which trying position he filled with credit during the World War.
Mrs. Baker was graduated from Wilson College, Chambersburg, Pa., where she subsequently taught music; was soloist in the choir of the Presebyterian church of Pottstown, and for a time soloist in Holy Trinity Episcopal Memorial Chapel, Philadelphia.3
