Alida Francile Stone, 90, formerly of Greenfield, died Feb. 16, 2003 in Glendale, Ariz.

She was born March 21, 1912 to Maurice and Faye (Gary) Melvin in the Rubican neighborhood of Greene County. She attended the Rubican Grade School and graduated from Greenfield High School in the class of 1930. She married Harold Batty Feb. 4, 1934 and later married Donald Stone of Phoenix Feb. 29, 1964. Both preceded her in death.

Survivors are three daughters, Phyllis (Batty) Dilts of Chico, Calif., Sandra (Batty) Kirkland of Avondale, Ariz., and Linda (Batty) Meeks of Glendale, Ariz; one brother, Rev. Garrett Lee (Deb) Melvin of Greenfield; three sisters, Margery (Melvin) Hankins of Greenfield, Mildred Melvin of Springfield and Mary (Melvin) Fox of Godfrey; seven grandchildren, Phyllis (Loy) Thornton of Salmon, Idaho, Harold Wayne Loy of Payson, Ariz., Larry (Joe) Price of Virden, Melissa (King) Lanfy of Chico Valley, Ariz., William (Bill) King of Phoenix, Anita (King) VanHousen of Airfield, Conn. and Scott Dilts of Phoenix; 13 great-grandchildren, Tyler and Melissa Van Wormer; Casey and Cole Thornton; Whitney and Keaton Loy; Austin, Jeremiah and Echo Laney; Kyle, Kayla and Karla Price; Samantha Dilts; and one great-great-grandchild, Chelsey (Van Wormer) Cottrel.

STONE SERVICES

Funeral services for former Greenfield resident Mrs. Alida Francile (Melvin) Batty Stone, 90, of Glendale, Ariz., were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, at Shields Memorial Home in Greenfield, with her brother, the Rev. Garrett Lee Melvin officiating. Debra Powell was organist and special numbers included "Amazing Grace" and "Will the Circle Be Unbroken."

Casketbearers were Coy Hedgecock, Neal Twitchell, Ralph Twitchell, John Sampson, John Thien, Earl Gray, Joe Price, Austin Laney, Wayne Loy and Don Fox. Burial was at Oak Wood Cemetery in Greenfield.

Claudia Faye (Melvin) Sampson, 69, of Jacksonville, Illinois died Thursday, July 2, at Passavant Hospital. She was born September 5, 1950 in Carrollton, Illinois to Maurice J. and Georgia E. (Clark) Melvin. She married John G. Sampson April 10, 1985 in Springfield, Illinois and he survives.

Also surviving is a son, Roger Goeddey of Jacksonville, Illinois two sisters, Linda (Bob) Cox of Girard, Illinois, and Rhonda (Jerry) Walker of Greenfield, Ilinois and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and an infant brother, Edward.

Claudia was a homemaker and loved her family. She showed this by making homemade greeting cards for family and friends for all occasions.

Private family services will be held, with burial at Oak Wood Cemetery, Greenfield, Illinois.

A funeral procession will leave the Shields-Bishop Funeral Home in Greenfield at approximately 11:45 on Tuesday traveling east to highway 267 and then north to the cemetery. Anyone wishing to pay their respects can do so by parking along the route.

Memorials are suggested to the BJC Hospice of Greene County and can be mailed to the funeral home at 604 Walnut St. in Greenfield.

He was born Jan. 20, 1920, in Greenfield,IL to Maurice L. and Faye M. (Gary) Melvin. He married Alta Steckel in Greenfield,IL in 1950 and she preceded him in death.

Surviving are two sisters: Margery Hankins of Greenfield,IL and Mary (Don) Fox of Godfrey,IL; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; sisters, Francile Stone and Mildred Melvin; and brothers, Gary Melvin and Maurice J. Melvin.

Garrett served his country in the U.S. Air force during WWII. He was an American Baptist minister, having been ordained in Oklahoma in 1977. He served at the former Pleasant Point Church north of Greenfield and several other area churches. He served as the west regional director for the Underground Evangelism, an organization that distributed Bibles behind the "Iron Curtain." He was a Doctor of Chiropractic, receiving his license in 1957, and practiced in Illinois, Oklahoma and Missouri. He enjoyed playing his harmonica and enjoyed being in the Sunshine Band from Jerseyville,IL, horseback riding, and sharing a good joke.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at the Shields-Bishop Funeral Home in Greenfield until time of funeral service at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at the Oak Wood Cemetery, north of Greenfield. Memorials are suggested to a charity of the donor's choice.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, sisters, Francile Stone and Mildred Melvin, brothers, Maurice, Gary, and Garrett Lee Melvin, a grandson, Mark Fricker, and 3 sons-in-law, Michael Arebalo, Bill Hopper, and Raymond Columbo.

Marge was a farm wife and homemaker and volunteered for several organizations. She was an active member of the Greenfield United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women's Club. She was quite a lady (one of a kind) and was able to live in her own home until departing this earthly life.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, April 24, 2019 at 11 AM at the Shields-Bishop Funeral Home in Greenfield, IL. Visitation will be from 9 AM until time of funeral on Wednesday, April 24, 2019. Burial will follow at the Oak Wood Cemetery north of Greenfield.
