Katherine Doris McLean married Prof. William Brown Terrell, son of Bedford Terrell and Jennie Scott, on 13 July 1925 at Guilford Co., NC. Katherine Doris McLean died on 26 February 1940 at Greensboro, Guilford Co., NC, at age 35 OBITUARY:
One of the largest crowds that ever gathered at Friedens Lutheran Church, near Gibsonville, was present this afternoon for the last rites held for Mrs. Doris McLean Terrell, wife of Prof. W. B. Terrell, of Elon College. She had been teaching school for 13 years and had taught in Elon College for the past six years. She was active in religious activities here and had for may years taught a Sunday school class. She was an active member of the woman's missionary society of the Conregational Christian Church and a member of the Friedens Lutheran church. The service was conducted by her pastor, Rev. John L. Morgan, and he was assisted by Dr. G. O. Lankford, of Elon College, who had performed the wedding ceremony of Prof. and Mrs. Terrell-and Dr. L.E. Smith, of Elon College."

She was buried in 1940 at Friedens Lutheran Church Cemetery, Gibsonville, Guilford Co., NC.
Note: Katherine took flying lessons from her brothers. She graduated from Elon College in 1925. Katherine married a classmate, William Brown Terrell, that same year and started her teaching career. She taught Home Economics at the Tryon High School in Gaston County for two years. Katherine later moved to Rock Springs School, Denver, North Carolina. She was a member of the Elon College elementary school faculty for ten years as a seventh grade teacher.

     Marshall Edwin McLean was born on 20 March 1901 at Gibsonville, Guilford Co., NC. He was the son of Marshall Rankin McLean and Rachel Sophia DeVault. Marshall Edwin McLean married Mabel Fern Crutchfield, daughter of Joseph Everett Crutchfield and Mary Elizabeth Paris, on 2 August 1925 at Johnston Co., NC. Marshall Edwin McLean died on 29 July 1979 at Gibsonville, Guilford Co., NC, at age 78. He was buried in August 1979 at Alamance Memorial Park, Burlington, Alamance Co., NC.
Note: Marshall was a member of the Civil Air Patrol during World War II, He supervised the construction of a saw mill at Manteo for timber used to build hangers there. Marshall was the owner and operator of McLean Brothers Flying Service. He was a veteran of the Marines.

Marshall Rankin McLean married Rachel Sophia DeVault, daughter of Jacob A. DeVault and Mary Ann Alexander, on 18 September 1890. Marshall Rankin McLean died on 26 November 1933 at Gibsonville, Guilford Co., NC, at age 72. He was buried in November 1933 at Friedens Lutheran Church Cemetery, Gibsonville, Guilford Co., NC.
Note: Marshall Rankin McLean married Rachel Sophia DeVault. His mother was also a DeVault, Isabel Catherine "Ibby, Catherine or Katie" DeVault. Isabel Catherine is shown in the 1850 Census for Guilford County, North Carolina living with her parents under the name Isabel C. Duvolt. Her parents were Gideon DeVault (born 1810 in North Carolina) and Elizabeth Gerringer). Gideon's parents were Valentine DeVault (born 1769 in North Carolina) and Anna Barbara May. Although an interesting coincidence, Marshall's mother is not a descendent of Henry Dewald of Pennsylvania.


Marshall was a charter member of the Sharon Evangelical Lutheran Church in Gibsonville. On November 11, 1894, he was appointed as one of the first deacons. According to his granddaughter, Betty (McLean) Moore, Marshall switched his membership from Friedens Lutheran Church to Sharon so there would be enough members to form a church. Sharon Lutheran was completed in December 1897.

William McLean, 78, ex-aviation director
William E, "Buck" McLean, a onetime barnstorming aviator who guided the development of the Orlando International Airport as the city's aviation director for more than a decade, died Monday at Orlando Regional Medical Center. He was 78.
"He was the pioneer in aviation for the city," said longtime friend Fred Turner. "He will probably be remembered as having had the vision and foresight for what the McCoy Airport could be."
When he became aviation director in the mid-1950s, the city's main airport was Orlando Executive, then called Herndon Airport.
"He was an aviation professional from the old school," said Wally Sanderlin, a former city council member who served on the city's aviation advisory board.
"He started out barnstorming and probably was the foremost aviation expert in Orlando during his time. The transition from Herndon to McCoy airfield was due to his leadership."
McLean retired in the late 1960s and moved to Crystal River, where he lived until 1980 when he moved to Oklawaha.
He was admitted to Orlando Regional Medical Center in late April.
Born in Guilford County, N.C., McLean was a Lutheran and a member of several organizations, including Composite Lodge 293 F&AM, the Orlando Scottish Rite Bodies, the Orlando York Rite Bodies, the Bahia Shrine Temple and the National Sojourners. He also belonged to the Heros of '76, the Quiet Birdman, the Three Coast Club and the Society of American Military Engineers.
His wife, Thesta, died in 1954.
Survivors include sons, Dick H., Oklahawa, David M., Windermere, James E. Tuscaloosa, Ala., Bill E., Austin, Texas; daughter, Sophie Ann Norman, Charleston, S.C; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
Winterpark Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


He was buried in June 1984 at Glen Haven Memorial Park, Winter Park, Orange Co., FL.

Coleman, in 1877. Sarah Elizabeth McLees died on 1 March 1893 at Blue Rock, Muskingum Co., OH, at age 36. Thomas McLees1

     Thomas McLees was born on 12 November 1823 at Ohio.1 He married Elizabeth Starrett in 1844. Thomas McLees began military service on 2 May 1864 at Zanesville, Muskingum Co., OH, Civil War service, Co. I, 160th Regt., Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He died on 26 October 1906 at age 82

Biographical sketch -- (Findagrave.com):

"I had a fine broadcloth suit, auburn hair, April curls,ruddy face, grey eyes, was six feet high, forty inches around the heart, wore a 7 3/8 hat, and felt that I was an American." Thomas McLees

Mr. McLees has been known as an outspoken anti-slavery man, and served in the Morgan raid five days under Capt. N. F. Claypool. He was mustered out, received his pay, and entered the O. N. G., Ninety-First Battalion. On May 2, 1864, he and his two sons reported at Zanesville, Ohio. He and the eldest son, Josiah were mustered into the service of the United States army, in Company I, One Hundred and Sixtieth Regiment, Capt. Henry S. Finley, under Gen. Franz Seigel. This regiment was placed in the First Brigade First Division of Gen. Hunter's army of West Virginia. On the night of July 3, 1864, they retreated from Martinsburg, W. Va., marched through the Potomac river and lay on the banks of the canal in wet clothes. On July 6 they went on to Maryland Heights at 11 o'clock p.m., Gen. Early in his raid following, and the fight began July 5. On July 7, 1864, Josiah McLees was in line of battle between Sharpsburg road and the Potomac river, and at 10 a.m. was mortally wounded, dying July 20. On September 7, 1864, Thomas McLees was mustered out of service.

He was buried in October 1906 at Duncan Falls Cemetery, Duncan Falls, Muskingum Co., OH, Findagrave #9711069.
