Made Against Henry Merchantell A Well Known Business Man of Forest In Divorce Papers Filed by His Wife Thursday Morning.
There promises to be quite a sensational divorce case in the next term of court. The case is brought about by Mrs. Merchantell, who sues for divorce from her husband Henry Merchantell, one of Forest's well known business men. The prominence of the parties make it all the more sensational.
In the petition filed Mrs. Merchantell says that they were married at Ada, Ohio, on the 31st of May, 1882. Since then she has been a faithful and obedient wife but during that time he has disregarded his duties as a husband and is guilty of extreme cruelty and gross neglect. His treatment has become unbearable and it is impossible to live with him, that they have been separated since the 28th of February of this year.
The plantiff claims that defendant has been cold and indifferent to her evder since their marriage, and has made her life wretched and beyond endurance. She claims that only last May a few days before she was to undergo an operation for the removal of a cancer, he left for Europe on a pleasure trip and that when he returned he never even as much as enquired the result of the operation nor the condition of her health. Not only this but she was compelled to pay $50 doctor bill and has been required to pay her own physician's bills ever since that time. The defendant, she states further, is a Dowieite and persecuted and harassed her for having a physician. The plantiff further stated in her petition that her life since their marriage has been one of hard labor, and during all that time she has done his household and other labors until her health failed. He even then refused to furnish or pay for help, and she was compelled to pay for her own help out of her private funds. By keeping boarders she was able to pay for the groceries and for other things for the table and house. Through all their married life he refused to furnish her with necessary clothing, and during those eighteen years bought her only one cloth dress, one calico dress and a pair of spectacles. She was compelled to buy all other clothing used by her during those eighteen years from her own personal fund, which was created by the income left her from her first husband.
The petitioner claims that she has paid $200 per annum amounting to $3600 in the eighteen years from her own estate. As a result they together accumulated a large amount of money. This is all in her name. The plaintiff asks that he be compelled to answer all and singular the promises. She prays for a divorce, that she be restored to her maidenname and that he be required to pay reasonable alimony."
May 2, 1901
"The Merchantell divorce case has been settled by arbitration, Mr. H. Merchantell agreeing to pay a certain amount of money deciced upon by a committee appointed by both parties concerned, to Mrs. H. Merchantell. -- Forest Review." Henry Merchantell died after 1920 at California (probably).
