PRINCEVILLE -- Arnel E. "Zeke" Medearis, 66, of Princeville died at 10:40 a.m. Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at Methodist Medical Center in Peoria. Born June 22, 1934, in Wyoming, Ill., to Arnel and Irma Smith Medearis, he married Earline Wisenburg on Sept. 5, 1953, in Sparland. She survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Pam (and Tim) Snyder of Princeville and Betty Jo (and Denny) Broadway of Edelstein; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jean (and Everett) Schaefer of Chillicothe and Lucille (and Arlin) Shofner of Henry; three brothers, Russ (and Linda) of Sparland, Charles (and Marilyn) and Lawrence (and Mary), both of Henry; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother.

He worked for Long Rock Stone Co. for 18 years, retiring in 1983. Prior to that, he worked for the Illinois Highway Department for several years. He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers.

He was of the Presbyterian faith.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Hammitt Hott Funeral Home. The Rev. Harry Losey will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Princeville Cemetery.

Jane Medley

     Jane Medley was also known as "Jennie". She was born in February 1860 at Missouri Janes's parents were difficult to identify. Collaborating with Tracy DeVault, we found that Sarah Medley "cousin" and listed in the 1880 census living in the Jesse Paul Medley family, next door to the Samuel Harvey DaVault family, had a sister Jane, born about 1860. Tracy researched the ancestry of Jesse P. Medley and found the grandparents, James A. Medley (1760 - 1849) and Sarah E. Smith. They had a son Jesse, brother of Jesse P. Medley's father Robert Medley, and that Jesse was the father of Jane Medley and her sister Sarah. The following obituary of Nellie (Medley) Sorrell, sister of Jane Medley, confirms the identification:

Mrs. Nellie Sorrell (nee Medley), wife of Richard Sorrell died Nov. 21 near Red Bird, a the age of 70 years. Leaves besides her husband one daughter, Mrs. Clara Rhodes, 2 grand children and I great-grandchild; 1 sister, Mrs. Jane Devault of Pratt, Kansas. Mr. and Mrs. Sorrell had been married 53 years. Mrs. Sorrell united with Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in her girl hood days and lived most of her life in and near Red Bird. She will be missed by all who knew her.      She joined the United Brethren church at Harristown June 1896 and was an active worker in the Sunday and Christian Endeavor work at one time here.
     She was a loving and devoted wife and mother, a kind neighbor. Her happy disposition, her devotion to home and friends will be greatly missed by all.
