Daniel Miller
M, b. 12 September 1778, d. 16 November 1862
Daniel Miller was born on 12 September 1778 at Franklin Co., PA.1 He was the son of John Miller and Elizabeth Price. Daniel Miller married Catherine Funk, daughter of John Funk and Barbara Rowland, circa 1802. Daniel Miller died on 16 November 1862 at Sharpsburg, Washington Co., MD, at age 84
Daniel Miller settled on what is known as the "Willow Spring" farm situated at the east end of the Antietam Battlefield. During the war, the farm comprised 210 acres. He had previously lived on what was afterward known as the "Leiter" farm, at the northwest end of the famous battlefield, to which he removed from Conococheague district when he was married. His house on the "Willow Spring" farm was taken by the Union army for a hospital and he went to live with his brother-in-law, Henry F. Neikirk, whose home was half a mile away. Here he died, his death no doubt being hastened by the excitement of the battle. During the battle a shell came through a window of the "Willow Spring" house and passed through the partition and through the hall into the next room, back of an eight-day clock which stood in the corner.
"At the Michael Miller farm near the East woods, Mr. William Miller, a son, told the writer that on the porch where the amputating tables were, the blood was thick against the walls for weeks after. This building was known in history as the General Franklin Hospital and hundreds were taken there to be cared for until they could be taken elsewhere." -- O. T. Reilly.2 He was buried in November 1862 at Mumma Cemetery, Sharpsburg, Washington Co., MD.
