In 1864 he went westward and spent two years in Illinois and Iowa and came home, spending a year there; then emigrated to California on the first train that crossed the plains. On that trip he saw the golden spike that was driven into a sleeper at the junction of the roads, May 12, 1868. The train was 13 days in crossing the plains. In Yolo Co., Cal., he took up 400 acres of land covered with timber.
