Erve Neuschwanger, 47, of Mount Carroll, died at 2 p.m. Friday June 8, 1945 in St. Francis Hospital, Freeport, which he entered Monday as a medical patient. Death was the result of an overdose of phenol barbital, a medicine taken by Neuschwanger, who had been in ill health for some time.

Funeral services were conducted Monday at 2 p.m. in the Frank Funeral Home in Mount Carroll, the Rev. Stanley A. Birdsall officiating, and burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Son of Christian and Mathilda (Souders) Neuschwanger, he was born July 12, 1897 at Mount Carroll. He married Esther Smith of Mount Carroll on March 7, 1918. They moved from their farm to the city of Mount Carroll last fall. Surviving are his widow; two sons, Harry and Glenn, both of Mount Carroll; two daughters, Mrs. Kenneth Kosher of Lanark and Doris at home; two grandchildren; five sisters, Mrs. Hattie Fulrath and Mrs. John Jones, both of Mount Carroll, Mrs. Edith Robbe of Savanna, and Mrs. Hugo Kholbry and Mrs. George Mitchell, both of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and four brothers, Charles, Ward, Earl, and Roy, all of Mount Carroll.

He was buried in June 1945 at Oak Hill Cemetery, Mt. Carroll, Carroll Co., IL, Findagrave #74749544.

     Jacob Neuschwanger was born on 10 October 1716 at Friesenheim, Palatinate.1 He was the son of Christian Neuenschwander and Anna Magdalena Steffen. Jacob Neuschwanger married Maria Gertraut Brombach, daughter of Melchior Brombach and Maria Elisabetha Fischbach, on 5 June 1738 at Opequon, Frederick (now Shenandoah) Co., VA.2 Jacob Neuschwanger died in 1753 at Frederick Co., VA.2

     Johannes Neuschwanger was also known as John Nicewanger. He was born on 19 February 1713 at Friesenheim, Palatinate.1 He was the son of Christian Neuenschwander and Anna Magdalena Steffen. Johannes Neuschwanger married Maria Magdalena Kieffer, daughter of Johann Jacob Kieffer, circa 1748. Johannes Neuschwanger died in 1788 at Frederick Co., VA.2

John Neuschwanger

M, b. 20 March 1742, d. 13 July 1821
     John Neuschwanger was also known as John Niswanger. He was born on 20 March 1742 at Frederick Co., VA.1 He was the son of Jacob Neuschwanger and Maria Gertraut Brombach. John Neuschwanger married Margaret Good circa 1766. John Neuschwanger began military service in 1774 at Frederick Co., VA, where he was listed as "Ensign" in Captain Peter Helphenstine's Company which was sent to the Ohio Valley to subdue the Indians in "Dunmore's War", and fought in the Battle of Point Pleasant, 10 OCT 1774. Upon breaking out of the Revolution, on 29 DEC 1776 Niswanger enlisted in Captain John Lemon's Company of the 13th Virginia Regiment, from Frederick County, holding the rank of sergeant. He was referred to as "Capt." Niswanger in assignment of rations to his company in 1777. His unit was at Ft. Henry in February 1778 and was at Ft. Pitt in the fall of 1779. He took the rank of Lieutenant Colonel on 3 MAY 1780 and was listed at his home in Frederick County as "Col. John Nisewanger" in a 1782 census of Frederick County.2

He lived, at Frederick County, Virginia before relocating first to Marietta and soon thereafter to Salisbury Twp. in Gallia County, which is now part of Meigs County since 1819.3

He died on 13 July 1821 at Middleport, Meigs Co., OH, at age 79.4 He was buried in July 1821 at Middleport, Meigs Co., OH.
Note:

Michael Wolfe, second husband of Maria Brombach, was a "chain bearer" for a surveyor in Virginia. A lawsuit was filed in Gallia County, Ohio on June 12, 1809 accusing John Neuschwanger (son of Maria by her first marriage) of having fraudently kept property that should have passed to her children from Michael Wolfe. The lawsuit dragged on for a dozen years and was eventually decided in favor of Neuschwanger. (Gallia County, OH, Chancery Book "F" pp. 123-141.)

He loved sports, especially his Horned Frogs, and loved spending time with his grandchildren. He was a sweet and gentle family man, always generous with his time, and willing to extend a helping hand to those in need. Ed was a devout Christian always extremely active in the church beginning as a youth with Billy Graham Ministries and as a chaplain at the Union Gospel Mission delivering the Gospel to the homeless for years. He found his calling in witnessing the Gospel to inmates of the Tarrant County Jail every Tuesday evening and volunteering as a chaplain at Sanders Estes Unit on Wednesday evenings. Survivors: Wife, Suzanne; their children and wives, Brent and Sheila Morford, Houston and Kathryn Morford and Trey and Sara Neville; beloved grandchildren, Katie and Sawyer Morford, Hagen, Zach and Grace Morford, Hudson and John Robert Neville; sisters, Alan and husband, Lee Clay, and Kaki and husband, Jerry Rottler; nieces, Courtney Breeding, Charlotte Buell and Mary Weeks Lytwn and their loving families.
