HELEN MOLT DIES
IN TRACTOR MISHAP
Was Trying To Cross Small Ditch
When Accident Occurred; Rites
Friday
Miss Helen Molt, 48, a lifelong resient of Elm River township was killed in a tractor accident eight miles northeast of Fairfield at four o'clock Tuesday afternoon.
The accident occurred on the 120 acre farm owned by Jerome Molt, her nephew. This is the former Everett Molt property.
The fatal accident occurred after Miss Molt's bother, Guy Molt, northwest of Fairfield, had gotten his tractor and disc stuck in the soft ground.
To Pull Out Tractor
Mr. Molt went to get his sister, who was neaby. She had been hauling a manure spreader with her tractor but this was detached and Mr. Molt jumped on the rear tow bar to ride toward his stalled tractor.
As they came to the ditch - one about two feet deep and three to four feet across - Mr. Molt jumped off as the tractor got into the ditch. As the vehicle started up the far side of the ditch the front wheels suddenly reared up and the vehicle turned over. Miss Molt was pinned to the ground by the steering wheel and seat.
Mr. Molt was so near he had to jump to one side to avoid the same fate as his sister.
Tried To Dig Her Out
As she breathed her last, Miss Molt whispered to her brother "dig me out." he tried desperately to do this but in vain.
Mr. Molt then ran a quarter of a mile east to where Dale Wylie was working in a field. Mr. Wylie broght his tractor to the scene and the upended tractor was lifted from Miss Molt's body, but she was dead.
The body was removed by ambulance to the Dixon & Crippen Funeral Home.
Crushing chest and abdomen injuries were the cause of death according to Coroner Robert McNeil who conducted an inquest.
The nephew, Jerome Molt, had been working on the same farm but left about 3:50 to come to Fairfield to get a tire fixed.
Good Tractor Operator
Mr. Molt told a Press reporter that his sister had crossed "that same ditch with a tractor a hundred times." It was not a steep incline. He and neighbors standing by said she was as good a tractor operator "as any man". Miss Molt lived by herself on the old homestead of her parents a half mile west of the accident scene. She did most of her own farming.
Funeral services will be held from the Dixon & Crippen chapel at 1:30 Friday afternoon, with Rev. Esco L. Robinson, Sr. officiating. Interment will be in Maple Hill cemetery. The body will be at the funeral home until the funeral hour.
Helen, daughter of Jerome and Sally O'Riley Molt, was born near Geff December 10th, 1913. She spent all her life in Wayne county in Elm River Township. She was never married.
Miss Molt was a longtime member of the Buckeye Cristian church and had been Sunday School treasurer many years.
The Survivors
Surviving are two brothers, Guy, of near Fairfield, and Paul, of Maplewood, Mo. a nephew Jerome Molt, near Fairfield; and two nieces, Mrs. Harold Wylie of Fresno, Calif; and Mrs. James Copeland, of Baldwin, Mo. Frank Molt here was an uncle and Everett Molt,of this city, was a cousin.
She was buried in April 1962 at Elm River Cemetery, Fairfield, Wayne Co., IL.
