Mary Elizabeth MORFORD, the eldest child of James T. and Catherine E. MORFORD, was born in Linn county, Iowa, near Mt. Vernon on September 11, 1866, and passed on to her eternal home at her home in Stafford on December 24, 1939, being 73 years, 3 months, 13 days of age.
She grew to womanhood in Iowa and received most of her education here. In January, 1884, she moved with her parents to Kansas and they settled on their place a mile and a half east of Eureka school house. She taught several successful terms of school and learned to endure the hardships of early pioneer life. She was converted early in life and united with the Eureka church and has always remained a faithful member.
On November 6, 1889, she was united in marriage to Plimpton K. NEWELL. To t his union were born seven children - five boys and two girls; Clare of Stafford; Laura McFADDEN of Mullinville, Kans;Stella HARGETT of Stafford; Glen and Raleigh of Oakland, Calif; Harry and Ralph of Stafford.
Her husband preceded her in death on January 3, 1920. She lived and reared her family in the Eureka neighborhood where she has always taken an active part in the church and social life of the community, during most of the time holding a responsible position of leadership as teacher in the Sabbath school and as treasurer of the Missionary Society. She loved her church and community and was ready to minister in any way she could, being of an understanding nature and loved by all.
She loved her Bible ad in the last 20 years or more of her life, it was her constant companion. She has been failing in health for several years. In November, 1937, she moved to Stafford where she has since made her home. Her last illness has been a period of about two months, but she was a patient sufferer through it all till God called her to her reward. She wa a good neighbor, loyal friend, a kind and loving mother and will be sadly missed by all. She was preceded in death by one grandchild, Richard NEWELL, a sister, Clara, and two brothers, Frank and Guy, the latter preceding her by only four days.
She leaves to mourn their loss, 7 children, 23 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, one brother, Ellis of Palisade, Colo., one sister, Mrs. Kate PAULSEN, Stafford, a number of nieces and nephews, many other near relatives and a host of friends.

"We loved her, yes we loved, her,
But the angels loved her more.
And they have sweetly called her,
To yonder shining shore.

The golden gates were opened
A gentle voice said, 'Come',
And with farewells unspoken
She calmly entered home."
Funeral services were held at the Eureka Methodist church Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 27, at 1 o'clock, Rev. L. C. McNeil officiated. Interment was in the Stafford cemetery.
