Alonzo Emmett Payne1
M, b. 1 December 1887, d. 12 April 1967
Alonzo Emmett Payne was born on 1 December 1887 at South Boston, Washington Co., IN.1 He was the son of Samuel Newton Payne and Dora Amelia Williams.1 Alonzo Emmett Payne married Florence Muriel Grubb, daughter of John Cummins Grubb and Medora Harrison Mead, on 22 December 1909 at Marion Co., IN. Alonzo Emmett Payne married Cora E. Abney on 8 September 1921 at Marion Co., IN.
Note: After Florence died, Emmett married Corrie [Cora "Corrie" (Abney) Davis]. Corrie was not interested in raising the children so they were were raised by their Aunt Grace [Permelia Grace (Payne) Elrod] and her husband on their farm in Remington, Indiana. (I-65 later bisected the Elrod farm.) Corrie died in the 1950's. After Corrie died, Ivan moved in with his father. Emmett married for a third time to Edith Davisson. Edith had eight grown children of her own. She was a fun loving women who took in Emmett's children and grandchildren as her own. Edith died in the early 1960's of a heart attack. Emmett was a real artisan and spent much of his later years making things of wood. His granddaughter has a box of farm wagons he made that are to scale. Emmett kept a journal that would make interesting reading.
Emmett was killed in an automobile accident in 1967. His granddaughter, Phyllis (Payne) Culp, tells about going over to Emmett's house after his death to clean out the refrigerator. She was about to enter the back door when a teenage boy came up and wanted to know what she was doing, breaking into his grandfather's house. Phyllis was sure he was not one of Emmett's grandchildren. They finally figured out that he was one of Edith's grandchildren who was very fond of Emmett.
Emmett's son Clarence went to work in the CCC camps in Coeur d' Alene, Idaho in the late 1920's. He was very bitter about his earnings going back to the father who didn't want him. Clarence blamed Franklin D. Roosevelt for everything bad that happened to him from that point on. Clarence and Emmett eventually patched up a relationship and were even in the construction business together for a period of time.
Emmett's daughter Mary never fully recovered from her mother's death. She had little to do with Emmett after that and her son and daughter never knew Emmett as a grandfather. Mary married Allen Hunter, a local politician. Phyllis, Mary's niece, says Mary was very elegant. She had a laugh that sounded like glass wind chimes. Mary's children live in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Emmett's son Ivan had some brain damage due to hydrocephalus. Ivan never married. He worked at a number of task directed jobs and retired from the Federal Government as a security guard at the Fort Harrison Army Base in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Alonzo Emmett Payne died on 12 April 1967 at age 79.
