(Freie Schriftenfolge der Gesellschaft für Familienforschung in Franken, vol. 8.) Nürnberg [Germany]: 1956, Appendix "Deserteure, Ueberlaeufer und N ...", pp. 151-172:

SCHWEIGERT, Johann Peter, was a Grenadier with the Ansbach Regt., 5.Co., and went missing (deserted) in June 1783. This Regiment along with the Bayreuth Regiment was part of the Cornwallis army who surrendered to Gen. Washington at Yorktown, VA, in Oct. 1781, and was marched to Frederick and Winchester. In spring of 1783 they were taken from their last POW camp to New York for their return home, and many, including Schweigert, not planning to return home, decided to seek freedom in America. Subsequently, the following names appear under which Schweigert and his male descendants were later known: Schweighert, Swaggart, Swigert, and Swigart.
