Lyne Starling1

M, b. 23 August 1848, d. 4 October 1916
Lyne Starling was born on 23 August 1848. He was the son of Gen. Lyne Starling and Maria Antoinette Hensley.
Note: In 1868, the William Starling Land Company run by Lyne Starling (b. 1806) purchased Sunnyside Plantation in Chicot County, Arkansas from the estate of Robert P. Pepper (Lyne's son in-law) of Kentucky whose family was related by marriage to the Starlings. Lyne Starling sent his sons Lyne and Charles to run it when they graduated from Yale in 1871. His son William also ended up there.....not sure when he came but before Sunnyside was sold. In 1881, it was sold to John C. Calhoun, the grandson and namesake of the famous John C. Calhoun of South Carolina. The Starling sons then moved to Greenville. A handwritten account of the family was written by Maria Hensley Starling -- shown below. The Levee Board mentioned in her accounts is the levee for the Mississippi River.

Lake Village, Chicot County, Arkansas, is just across the Mississippi River from Greenville. The oxbow lake, Lake Chicot, has become a popular recreation lake. The Sunnyside name is still used today (2000).

Also......the Charles mentioned above ended up moving from Greenville to Canada. He had a son, William, who was accused of embezzling from a bank. William was married but had no children. He committed suicide -- apparently because of the accusation. He is buried in Greenville. His father, Charles, paid the bank the missing amount and subsequently moved his family to Canada. That's how a branch of the Starlings got to Canada.

Notes written by Maria Hensley Starling
(daughter of Lyne Starling & Kate Crittenden Watson)

Maria Antoinette Hensley married Lyne Starling in Frankfort, Kentucky in 1834 and went to live in Columbus, Ohio, a kind of colony of his relatives. Their first six children were born there. They then moved to New York much against the wishes of Lyne's uncle, Lyne, one of the founders of Columbus, who had promised to make Lyne his heir if he would stay in Columbus. The seventh child, Lyne, was born in Kentucky on one of his mother's visits to her relatives in Frankfort. Charles and Laura were born in New York. A business crash in New York about 1858 caused them to move to the prairie in Illinois, near Kankakee and build a home on land owned by relatives until plans could be made for the future.

When the Civil War broke out in 1861 the family moved back to Kentucky and Lyne (the father) and his oldest son William joined the Federal Army. After the war was over he was interested in some pioneer work in West Virginia. Elizabeth, the oldest daughter, was married in 1865 to Robert Perry Pepper and moved to a beautiful home where all of her children were born, which is still occupied by some of her descendants. William went into business in New York, Charles and Lyne went to Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut. Mrs. Starling and Laura being the only ones left at home, she sold the big house on Main Street and bought a smaller one near the home of her daughter, Elizabeth that had more ground for gardening, etc.

In 1871 a bank in Frankfort having come into possession of a plantation, Sunnyside, Arkansas about ten miles south of Greenville, Mississippi of which they wished to dispose and Mr. Starling having had some experience in planting cotton, they offered it to him on what he thought were very favorable (liberal) terms. The family now divided its time between Sunnyside, Arkansas and Frankfort, Kentucky. In June, 1871 Lyne and Charles were graduated from Yale. Lyne was married on October 1st to Kate Crittenden Watson of Frankfort and took his bride to Sunnyside. In 1876, Mr. Starling died very suddenly, in New Orleans, LA where William had taken him to see the celebrated Dr. Chopin. He was buried in New Orleans, but in 1896 when his wife died in Greenville and her body was taken to Frankfort for burial, his body was moved to Frankfort and placed beside hers in Frankfort's beautiful cemetery.

In 1878 Charles was married to Annie Taylor Johnson who lived about four miles from Sunnyside at Lakeport. They were married rather hurriedly as Mrs. Johnson had to go to St. Louis to buy supplies for the plantation. There are many funny stories about Charles' trousseau. It was just at the end of the terrible yellow fever epidemic, Greenville was still in quarantine and of course no shopping could be done. He had the pick of the wardrobes of the family.

In 1882 a large land company in the East bought Sunnyside and several adjoining plantations and thus ended their plantation life. The family moved over to Greenville. William though having studied engineering at New York University had not had an opportunity to utilize his knowledge and feeling rather incapable applied for the job of rodman with the Levee Board. Soon after when his ability was realized he was made chief engineer for the Levee District. Lyne went into the mercantile business, the firm of Starling and Smith. Charles, already a young lawyer, went into the law office of Shields and Campbell. Later upon the death of Mr. Shields the firm became Campbell and Starling.

More can be found on the Starling side in the "Starling Memorial." Lyne Starling married Katherine Crittenden Watson, daughter of Henry Watson and Elizabeth Anne Todd, in 1872 at Frankfort, Franklin Co., KY.2 Lyne Starling died on 4 October 1916 at age 68.
