M, b. 1796, d. 9 November 1845
James Starr was buried at Oak Grove Cemetery. He was born in 1796 at Conasauga Creek, McMinn Co., Cherokee Nation East (now TN). He was the son of Caleb Starr and Nancy Harlan. James Starr married Nellie Maugh, daughter of Willioki Maugh and Qua-tee (?), in 1818 at Cherokee Nation East, TN.
Note: James married sisters Nellie and Susie Maugh (sequentially) and between them they had 20 children. James was directly involved with and signed the Treaty of New Echota on December 29, 1835. This treaty resulted in the removal of the Cherokees from their lands, and capital, at New Echota, Georgia and sent them to western Arkansas and Oklahoma. This trek was later to become known as the infamous "Trail of Tears". James' wife bore him a child in Mississippi during the journey and among the victims of a cholera outbreak during the trip was one child of James Starr. After the journey a feud developed between the tribe and James, his twelve sons and two confederate white men. James and his sons were pursued for ten years. More than likely it was this type of life that lead to the lawlessness of James Starr's sons. The feud was caused by the treaty of 1835 and continued until 1845. It's said that thirty-two men surrounded his house, just about sun-up on a Sunday morning and riddled his body with bullets. Tom, his son, said years later "you know there was thirty-two men that slipped up and killed my daddy; well I got most of them except just a few that got sick and died in bed before I could get to them". That was his kind of justice.

James Starr died on 9 November 1845 at Oak Grove, Flint District, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory (now OK), Assassinated by32 men from the Ross faction of the Cherokee Nation for his part in supporting the Treaty of New Echota.
