Edith Baker
Dies at 79

Three years ago Edith E. Baker fell and broke a shoulder and it could not be set. In spite of the ensuing discomfort, her calmness of spirit could not be ruffled and she never complained. Age 79, she died yesterday in Huff’s Sanitarium.

Born in Washington County, Mrs. Baker was the daughter of John and Eliza Payne, a farm couple. She came to Indianapolis from Logansport in 1927. For the last 14 years, she had lived with her son, Seward A. Baker, 335 N. Bosart, sales manager for the Crown Laundry and Dry Cleaning Co., who survives.

In her earlier years, Mrs. Baker was well versed in the intricacies of dress patterns and did dressmaking in her home. Her husband, Loren M. Baker, a Pennsylvania Railroad carpenter, died in 1940. She was a member of the Wheatland Avenue Methodist Church at Logansport.

In her later years, Mrs. Baker took up raising African violets and had amazingly good luck in growing the delicate blooms. At the time of her death she had several plants with members of her family are endeavoring to keep in bloom. She was also fond of reading.

Survivors, besides the son, are a sister, Mrs. Herman R. Morris, Terre Haute; two brothers, Seward O. Payne, Eau Gallie, Fla., and Howard Payne, Markle, and two grandchildren.

She was buried in January 1954 at Washington Park East Cemetery, Indianapolis, Marion Co., IN, Findagrave #5322795.

For several years she has been secretary as well as organist of the Conway Sunday school and with her cheerful disposition and regular attendance did much toward keeping up interest in Sunday school work. She was especially fond of music and was endowed with a beautiful voice. She graduated from the common school at South Boston about four years ago, where she endeared herself to her school mates and teachers alike, all of whom will feel a personal loss in her departure. Most of her short life was spent with her father and mother, however since her marriage she and her husband have lived at Oaklandon, Ind., a few miles north of Indianapolis. Her husband, father and mother were at her bedside when the end came.
