Note: THE PEPPERS' HOUSES (from Ned Boyajian)
Regarding the Pepper's house: They had two. Their primary home was a 21-room house with an old-fashioned iron fence and gate on an ample property graced with many trees. The home stood on Main Street in Frankfort, directly across from the First Presbyterian Church. As it turned out, the house actually had 22 rooms. Lyne Goedecke, climbing on the roof, found a trap door. He opened the door and discovered a small room. In it was little rocking chair and little old fashioned side-buttoned child's shoe. There was no door into the interior of the house. The family speculates that the room might have been used by the underground railroad. The town house on Main Street survived until relatively recently. The family had to sell -- but on the understanding that the new owners would preserve the house. But the new owners lied; they tore it down and put up an office building. The family was heartbroken.

The Peppers' summer home was named The Cliffs and it stood along Wilkerson Highway on a bluff overlooking Frankfort. I don't know when The Cliffs was razed. The Cliffs had a wide veranda that went around two sides. A stream went along the house on the outside of the dining room window. Over the front entrance was this quote: "This day forth and Evermore, Blessings on those who come to this door." One day the mother and sister of Charles D. Clay, Susan Jacob Clay and Lucretia Clay (known to the family as Teetee) made a formal visit to the Cliffs. Teetee was an elegant, very proper little woman and on this occasion she wore a fancy flower hat. Now the Pepper family had a little pet monkey named Mike. When the Clays arrived, Mike was chained in the kitchen, but somehow he got loose. He came running around onto the porch where they all were sitting and jumped up on Teetee and hopped on her head and stamped on her little flower hat.

Obituary -- (Findagrave.com):

Robert was a breeder and racer of fine Kentucky trotting horses and a distiller of fine bourbon whiskey. When his distillery burned down, Pepper yielded to his wife's entreaties and the demands of the temperance movement - he did not rebuild, but went into the trotting horse business.

Exceptionally successful, Pepper's stable became famous for the sires Norval, Madrid, Acolyte and Onward. Mares were shipped from across the globe to breed with Pepper stallions.

The Pepper residence at 415 West Main was, before its demolition, a meeting place for the Frankfort gentry. Although a Union sympathizer who set out kettles of soup for Yankee soldiers garrisoning Frankfort during the Civil War, Mrs. Pepper carried on the traditions of old-style Southern hospitality in a grand manner.
