Two die in Noti after truck rolls

A Noti woman and Vaughn man died in a single car accident early Monday on poodle Creek Road south of Allison Road.

Laurie Jean Maher, 23, 22527 Highway 126, Noti, and Gene Neil Shankle, 28, 21660 Vaughn Road, were dead when Oregon State Police arrived. They had been front passengers in a 1959 Ford pickup driven by Mark Robert Johnson, 25, 22527 Highway 126, Noti, who was uninjured.

The three were apparently coming from Allison Road and on their way to take Shankle home at 5:30 a.m. when the vehicle rounded a curve, skidded off the road on the west side and rolled, ejecting the passengers, police said.

Gene Neil Shankle, 28, 21660 Vaughn Road, Vaughn, died Monday, Dec. 26. He was born April 20, 1955 in Eugene. He was a tree planter for the Horn Creek Logging Company.

He is survived by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Shankle, Vaughn, three brothers, Pat, Elmira, Mike, and Shawn and two sisters, Rhonda and Julie, all of Vaughn.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 28, at Sailor Cemetery, noon, with the Rev. Willett Jessee of the Noti Church of Christ officiating. Chapel of Memories in charge of arrangements.

Shankle lived on 29 April 1940 at East Yantic, Blaine Co., MT. He married Melvina Rose Stevens, daughter of Thomas M. Stevens and Sarah M. Cady, on 20 May 1950 at Chester, Liberty Co., MT. Harold L. Shankle and Melvina Rose Stevens were divorced on 12 August 1954. Harold L. Harold L. Shankle, 72, passed away May 1, 1988 at the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd, Havre, Montana, where he had made his home since January 20, 1988.
Harold was born September 23, 1915 in Chinook. Dr. Hoon was the attending physician. He had been a difficult birth and Harold's mother, Cora Alice, died a couple months later.
Harold was raised by his grandparents, Isaac and Luella Shankle, and had many good memories of living with his Aunt Minnie and Uncle Mike Terbovitz in the Lohman area; attending high school with his cousins, Earl and Harold Terbovitz.
During the summer months Harold worked for his Uncle Mike on the Great Northern Railroad as a laborer.
He returned to Wichita, Kansas and there he married Pearl Bird in 1938. To this marriage were born two children, Harold Dexter and Vernelia Cora.
Harold went to work for the Great Northern Railroad in 1939 making their home in the Lohman area.
The railroad was Harold's life. He followed in his uncle's footsteps as a section foreman, loving the outdoors and the railroad tracks.
Harold and Pearl divorced and he remarried in 1949 to Melvina Stevens and to this marriage were born a daughter, Ronnda Lynn. Harold moved his family to Buffalo, Montana, leaving the main line and working the Lewistown tracks. Harold and Melvina divorced and he married Helen Sluggett in 1958, returning to the main line, maintaining the tracks between the east side of Fort Benton to Box Elder.
Helen and Harold had two children Maureen Kay and a son, Rick Howard. They returned to the Lewistown area, once again, this time making their home in Lewistown. Harold and Helen divorced and he returned to the main line working the track again between Box Elder and Fort Benton.
Harold married Pauline Miles March 10, 1972 at Fort Benton and they made their home in Big Sandy. Harold retired from the Burlington Northern Railroad in September 1975 after 40 years of service at the age of 60.
Harold and Pauline moved to Conrad in July 1979 and then to Great Falls in February 1985, where his wife, Pauline, still resides.
Harold is preceded in death by his father, Abraham H. and son, Harold Dexter and a grandson John Joseph Tilleman.
Harold is survived by his family mentioned and one half-brother, Rollin Shankle of San Diego, California; two half-sisters, Fina Gwin of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Alice Marie Tucker of Tampa, Florida; and 12 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Services were held at the Edwards Funeral Chapel, May 6, 1988, with Pastor Betty Mawbey officiating.
Burial was at the Kuper Memorial Cemetery.

NOTI--A memorial service will be held Sept. 8 for Julia Ann Shankle of Noti, who died Sept. 3 of cancer. She was 39.

Shankle was born Oct. 13, 1961, in Eugene, to Ron and Lillian Davis Shankle. She married Rick Trudell in Eugene on Jan. 27, 1999.

She graduated from Elmira High School and worked at the Noti Market. She lived in Bend from February 2000 to August 2001.

Her interests included reading, drawing and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband; her parents of Noti; two daughters, Angelica Trudell and Maggie Shankle, both of Noti; three brothers, Shawn of Walton, and Mike and Pat, both of Noti; and a sister, Ronda Shankle, also of Noti. A brother, Gene, died previously.

Saturday's service will be at 1 p.m. at the Noti Church of Christ. Andreason's Cremation & Burial Service, Eugene, in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Hospice Care or the American Cancer Society.

Minnie May Shankle Terbovitz was born September 16, 1899, in Carroll County, Missouri to Isaac and Ella Roush Shankle. She passed away September 5, 1963 at a Havre hospital.
With her parents, Minnie came to Montana in 1913 from their home in Penacolsa, Kansas. They homesteaded north of Chinook in the Cherry Ridge area.
She was married to Michael Terbovitz December 29, 1917 at Chinook and the couple lived out their lives in the Lohman community. They had two sons, Earl and Harold, who both reside at Lohman.
Surviving in addition to her sons are three brothers; Rev.Lewis Shankle, Roswell, New Mexico; Abraham Shankle, Westville, Oklahoma; Earl Shankle, Noti,Oregon and one sister, Mrs. Pearl Donely, Noblesville, Indiana. There are also three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews who mourn the passing of a loved family member.
Funeral services for Mrs. Mike Terbovitz were conducted Monday,September 9, 1963 at two O'clock from the Kuper Funeral Home in Chinook, Rev. Leon Johnson pastor of the Methodist Church officiated at the services.

     Rollin E. Shankle was born circa October 1919 at Wichita, Sedgwick Co., KS, Military records indicate DOB of 16 JUL 1919, however on the 1920 census (January) his parents indicated he was 2 months old on his most recent birth date, which would have been 16 DEC 1919. His date of first enlistment was his 20th birthday in 1939 so it apparently was an error in the enlistment documentation. DLB 2017.1 He was the son of Abraham Friday Shankle and Fiina Fillmanson.1 Rollin E. Shankle began military service on 16 October 1939 Enlisted, USMC.2 He lived on 4 April 1940 at U.S. Marine Corps Base, San Diego, San Diego Co., CA.2 He lived in 1972 at San Diego, San Diego Co., CA. He lived in 1988 at San Diego, San Diego Co., CA. He died on 3 July 2005.

Ronald E. Shankle1

     Ronald E. Shankle was born on 25 July 1928 at Wichita, Sedgwick Co., KS.1 He was the son of Earl Edward Shankle and Grace Lillian Wallace.1 Ronald E. Shankle began military service in 1946 U.S Navy service from 1946 - 1948. He married Lillian V. Davis, daughter of John Davis and Margaret (?), in 1946 at Lane, OR. Ronald E. Shankle died on 17 September 2007 at age 79 Obituary (findagrave.com):

NOTI - A celebration of life will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at 21654 Vaughn Road in Veneta for Ronald E. "Ron" Shankle of Noti. He died Sept. 17 of renal failure at age 79.

He was born July 25, 1928, in Wichita, Kan., to Earl and Grace Wallace Shankle. He married Lillian Davis in Eugene.

He graduated from Elmira High School and served in the Navy from 1946 to 1948. He worked as an independent log trucker.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Mike and Pat, both of Noti, and Shawn of Walton; a daughter, Ronda Shankle of Noti; a brother, Dick of Salem; a sister, Dorothy Ritter of Eugene; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Two children, Julie Shankle and Gene Shankle, died previously.

Burial will be in Sailor Cemetery in Noti. Arrangements by Andreason's Cremation & Burial Service in Springfield. Remembrances to Senior Connections in Veneta.

He was buried in 2007 at Sailor Cemetery, Noti, Lane Co., OR, Find A Grave Memorial# 172061675.

     Rosa May Shankle was born on 23 February 1882 at Carroll Co., MO.1 She was the daughter of John Henry Shankle and Harriet L. Roush.1 Rosa May Shankle married John Walter Brady, son of James T. Brady and Henrietta Julia Baril.2 Rosa May Shankle lived on 20 January 1920 at Eureka Twp., Kingman Co., KS.2 She married Samuel Sallee before April 1930. Rosa May Shankle died on 4 September 1963 at age 81. She was buried in September 1963 at Dresden Cemetery, Cunningham, Kingman Co., KS, Find A Grave Memorial# 30465423.

     Rosa May Shankle was born on 31 July 1931 at Kingman Co., KS.1 She was the daughter of Wilbert Guy Shankle and Nellie Markley Tredway.1 Rosa May Shankle died on 28 December 1994 at Manchester, Delaware Co., IA, at age 63 Obituary (findagrave.com):

Rosa May Shankle Ostrander,63, died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 1994, in her home following a fall down the basement steps.

Services were held at Bohnenkamp-Theulen Funeral Home, by the Rev. Lois Abel.

Survivors include three sons, Eugene, William and Robert Carpenter, all of Manchester; two daughters, Kathryn Strief of Masonville and Marsha Carpenter of Tipton; a stepson, Eric Ostrander of Manchester; and four stepdaughters, Laurie Mohning of Garnavillo, Janie Ostrander of Manchester, Julie Ostrander of Wadena and Ellie Thibadeau of West Union.
