Sioux Valley News, May 31, 1883, page 4: Died in Correctionville May 24, 1883, David C. Polley. He was born in Stamford, Delaware Co, New York, April 18, 1830. Removed to Wisconsin with his parents in 1844, from thence to Winnesheik Co, Iowa in 1854. January 21, 1855, he married Martha J. Windell of Indiana. On the opening of the rebellion his mind and heart could not rest until he had entered the army with his brother Charles to do all in his power for the saving of his country. This was natural for a true American and one of his ancestry, his grandfather having served in the revolutionary army as lieutenant colonel from Rhode Island and his father having gone from New York to engage in the war of 1812. Mr Polley served his country 3 years. At the siege of Atlanta he received an injury which caused him much suffering on his return home. A recent fall so aggravated the wound that his death was quite sudden. He suffered severely on Tuesday and Wednesday and died about noon on Thursday. His physicians and friends were very kind in their services. The wife, though nearly prostrated by the sudden blow, was extremely faithful in her care. Mr. Polley was one of our old residents, having moved to Union Ridge in July 1869 and to the city last fall. He was a hard working man, as one may see by his farm where his son now resides, and one of thoroughly honest and upright character. Funeral services were on Friday conducted by Rev. C.N. Sinnett, assisted by the excellent rendering of hymns by the choir.
