Caspar Semmler

M, b. circa 1802, d. before September 1850
Note: The German surname "Semmler" is believed to be derived from "semmel", a small baked bread traditionally from the southern region of modern Germany.

According to family tradition, 6 children were brought from Germany. Anecdotal information and some online genealogies indicate a daughter named Rosa born 1857 in Dayton, married to a Rahn, and cite the 1880 census, Dayton, Ohio, in which a Rosa, age 23, is the wife of M. C. Rahn. But that Rosa is listed as having both parents born in Ohio. Moreover, Catherine Semmler would have been about 54 years old in 1857, based on her 1850 age. The family tradition is that six children immigrated with the family, and the 1846 ship's passenger list accounts for six children coming with Caspar, so I doubt the "Rosa" theory very much. DLB - 2015.

Caspar Semmler was born circa 1802 at Hessen Darmstadt, Germany, Caspar gave his age as 44 in August, 1846, for the ship's passenger list. The passenger list appears to show "Unterseiber" or "Unterseiben" as the home town, but no such place is found in modern Germany. There is an Unter-Seibertenrot, which has been merged with the town of Ulrichstein since 1972, in the Vogelsbergkreis district of Hesse, about 45 miles northwest of Frankfurt. At the turn of the 19th century, Unter-Seibertenrot and Ober-Seibertenrot were located in the Landgraviate of Hessen Darmstadt.1 He married Maria Catherine Roat, The passenger list for the ship Luisa from Bremen to Baltimore, dated 24 AUG 1846, shows Caspar Semmler and his children and son in-law, but does not show a wife. Possibly Caspar married in the USA after having lost his first wife in Germany. More research needed. DLB 2015.1,2

Caspar Semmler immigrated on 24 August 1846; On the ship Louisa from Bremen to Baltimore, indicating destination "Ohio". Baltimore, Maryland. Passenger Lists of Vessels Arriving at Baltimore, Maryland, 1820-1891. Micropublication M255. RG036. 50 rolls. National Archives, Washington, D.C. He died before September 1850 at Mad River Twp., Montgomery Co. (probably), OH.
Note:

A Frederick "Simler", born about 1830 in "Bavaria Germany", is found in the 1860 census, living in Mad River Twp., Montgomery County, Ohio adjacent to a Frederick Swartz, butcher, who may have had some relationship with the Schwartz husband of Elizabeth Semmler, daughter of Caspar Semmler. This same Frederick Semler family closely matches the Frederick and Mary Semler family found in 1870 Columbus, Ward 7, Franklin County, Ohio. The only match in 1850 is to a Frederick Semler in Hagerstown, Maryland. Further research needed to determine his parents. Also, a Caspar Semler is buried in the Dayton, Ohio VA cemetery, with Civil War service. I suspect this was the Caspar Semmler, age 19 and born in Hessen Darmstadt, listed in the 1860 census, Springfield, Ohio, with no obvious relationship to the Semlers of Montgomery and Greene Counties. Further research is needed to confirm. DLB 2015.

Maria Catherina Semmler

F, b. March 1827, d. after 16 June 1900
Maria Catherina Semmler was also known as "Catherine". She was born in March 1827 at Hesse Darmstadt, Germany.1,2,3,4,5 She was the daughter of Caspar Semmler and Maria Catherine Roat.2 Maria Catherina Semmler married Lewis Niemeier on 11 April 1850 at Montgomery Co., OH, license application 6 APR 1850 names her "Catherine Simler".
Three children born, all living as of 1900 census. Maria Catherina Semmler died after 16 June 1900.
Note: This person "Catherina" listed in the family on the 1850 census appears to be the same individual as the "Elizabeth" listed on the ship's passenger list -- the age differs by one year and the birth order is a match. Elizabeth could have been the calling name of a child christened Catherina Elisabetha. On the 1850 census she is annotated "insane" -- perhaps a language issue with the enumerator, since the surname was also mangled to read "Cimley". DLB 2015.1,2
