Rose Lee Reed

F, b. September 1868, d. 6 July 1925
Rose Lee Reed was also known as "Pearl Starr".1
Note: per Findagrave.com memorial:

Rose "Rosie" Lee "Pearl" Reed was the daughter of the famous outlaw, Myra Maybelle Shirley aka "Belle Starr" and her first husband, James "Jim" Reed, also an outlaw.

She was married four times and had 4 children: (1) Charles Kaigler, one daughter Ruth D. Kaigler; (2) Robert McClure, one daughter: Mamie McClure who was adopted by Mr. & Mrs. David Epple of Newton, Kansas; they named her Flossie Pearl Epple; (3) Count Arthur E. Erbach, one son E. Erback who died as an infant and is buried at Oak Cemetery, Fort Smith, AR; (4) Dell Andrews, one daughter Jenette Steele Andrews Vignolo Scott.

"Pearl" had one brother: James Edwin "Eddie" Reed [name is in dispute, some sources say his name was Edwin Benton Reed]. She had lived at Younger's Bend in Oklahoma with her brother Eddie; when Eddie went to prison, she earned her living by being a prostitute in brothels in Fort Smith and Van Buren, Arkansas. Eddie spurned Pearl when he learned she had worked as a prostitute to earn money for his release from prison.

She worked and lived at Miss Laura's Social Club and Restaurant in Ft. Smith. Her name is over a door upstairs. Later, she took over from Miss Laura in the 1920's until the 1930's.

Pearl had her mother, Belle Starr's tombstone engraved with the name of her mother's favorite mare "Venus" and had written a 4-line poem that says: "Shed not for the bitter tear, nor give the heart to vain regret, Tis but a casket that lies here, the gem that filled it sparkles yet."

She died quietly in Douglas, Arizona, with no one knowing who she was.

She was born in September 1868 at Rich Hill, Bates Co., MO, 1900 census shows 1870, however on the 1870 census, Los Nietos Twp., Los Angeles County, CA, she is listed as age 2, and a younger sister Eliza was born about May, 1870, as per the 1870 census.1 She was the daughter of James Commodore Reed and Myra Maybelle Shirley. Rose Lee Reed married Charles Koegler.
Note: After her move to Fort Smith, Arkansas she changed her name to Pearl Starr. Pearl's relationship with Koegler ended soon after Ruth's birth.

Rose Lee Reed married Count Arthur E. Erbach on 10 October 1897 at Fayetteville, Washington Co., AR. Rose Lee Reed married Dell Andrews on 5 May 1902 at Fayetteville, Washington Co., AR, license date. Rose Lee Reed lived on 29 April 1910 at Winslow Twp., Washington Co., AR, Farmer, marital status "D", two children born, both living (she apparently didn't count Flossie or Arthur).2 She died on 6 July 1925 at Douglas, Cochise Co., AZ, at age 56. She was buried in July 1925 at Calvary Cemetery, Douglas, Cochise Co., AZ, Findagrave #7774203.

Obituary -- (Findagrave.com):

Ruth Carol (Reed) Van Houten, age 91, of Columbus, OH, died peacefully on Wednesday August 7, 2019 at Traditions at Mill Run in Hilliard, OH.

Preceded in death by her parents, Perce and Marie Reed, her brothers Perce Reed Jr., Robert (Esther) Reed and Paul Reed, loving husband of 64 years Andrew William Van Houten, son Steven Allan Van Houten, and daughter Ellen Marie Van Houten.

Survived by son Andrew William Van Houten of New York, NY, and Ellen's partner Finn Quinn, his son and daughter-in-law William and Erica Quinn and their daughter Emily, all of Columbus, OH, and many nieces and nephews.

Ruth Carol was born on January 1, 1928 in Cleveland, OH and graduated from East High School in Columbus, OH in 1946. She then enrolled at the Ohio State University, joined the Delta Zeta sorority and graduated in 1950 with a BA in fine arts. One of her favorite teachers was Roy Lichtenstein, later to become a renowned artist, who was then a graduate student at OSU. While in college she met her future husband Andrew Van Houten and they were married in November, 1951.

Upon graduation, using her skills at mechanical drawing, she obtained her first job at the printer Warner P. Simpson Company in Columbus. Andrew and Ruth Carol spent most of the fifties in Springfield, OH where she worked at the Crown-Collier Publishing Company before starting her family. She also served as president of the local Delta Zeta alumnae chapter. In 1960, the family moved to Reynoldsburg, OH and lived there for the next twenty-two years. Ruth Carol became involved in educational issues serving as president of the PTA and co-chairman of the campaign for the 1972 school levy for the Reynoldsburg city schools. She was also an active member of the Reynoldsburg United Methodist Church. After moving to Scioto Trace in Columbus in 1982, Ruth Carol started the process of educating herself about managing her family's investments. She became a follower of Benjamin Graham whose book The Intelligent Investor became the key text for "value investing." She was an avid reader of The Wall Street Journal, Investor's Business Daily, Barron's and other business publications, as well as becoming adept at analyzing companies' public financial statements. Ruth Carol and Andrew enjoyed traveling across the U.S. and Europe. They participated in many trips sponsored by the Columbus Museum of Art, of which they were longtime members and supporters. She loved playing bridge which she first learned at her Delta Zeta sorority house. For over sixty years, she regularly played in bridge clubs in Springfield, Reynoldsburg and Columbus. She also loved being outside gardening with her husband.

The family wishes to thank the staffs of Northwest Family Physicians, Riverside Methodist Hospital, First Community Village, and the National Church Residences hospice team. The family wants especially to recognize the staff at Traditions at Mill Run for their professional and compassionate care of Ruth Carol over the past several years.
