Newspaper article -- (Findagrave.com):

Touched a Live Wire
A.E. Shaffer, Manager of Electric Light Plant
Electrocuted Saturday morning Arm and Fingers Burned to a Crisp Victim of Short Circuit

A.E. Shaffer was killed about six o’clock last Sat morning near his home at Arcadia by coming in contact with a live electric wire. Mr. Shaffer was manager of the Arcadia Electric Light Plant and one of his duties was to turn off the lights in the morning. He had placed a switch on an electric light pole near his home for this purpose to save himself the trouble of walking several squares to the electric station. The switch had been placed on the pole out of the reach of the public, and it was necessary to use a stepladder to reach it. A metal lever was used on the switch and several times had Mr. Shaffer been advised to replace it with one of rubber, but he had not done so. Saturday morning Mr. Shaffer mounted the ladder to turn off the lights. It is supposed that just as he took hold of the lever the ladder slipped and that in order to save himself from a fall, he grabbed hold of the wire on the pole This made a short circuit and the entire electric current passed through his body. John Martin, a resident of Arcadia, was an eye witness of the affair, and says that fire and sparks flew from Shaffer's face and hands as soon as he touched the wire. The body fell to the ground instantly and life was extinct in a few moments despite the efforts of a physician who was called. Three fingers and the thumb on the right hand were burned to a crisp and the left arm was badly burned clear to the elbow; his face was also badly burned.

The deceased was 32 years old, the son of George Shaffer, a well known citizen of Arcadia, and is survived by a wife and one child.

Funeral was held at the M.E. church MOnday afternoon at two with interment in the Dunkard grave yard east of Arcadia.

Obituary -- (Findagrave.com):

The unexpected has come to pass. A fellow citizen, honored and respected, departs into the shadows. The abruptness of his going has startled the entire community. In a moment, without forewarning, our friend and brother embarks on the River Death. We stand on the shore, bordering the eternities, and with shaded eyes we scan the horizon, but our vision is obscured by rising mists coming from the great deep of our soul. We cry, but our voice is but an empty echo. We stand in the shadows and wait, and listen and wonder, and try to understand our brother's going. He seems not to know our anxiety. The clouds deepen the lightnings flash, the thunders roar, the night approaches, fear possesses us, the foundations of life, seem crumbling away, the pillars of the soul sway to and fro when we feel the crawl and crush of shattered hope stealing upon us, then out of the encircling gloom a voice,s oft and gentle as the breath of spring speaks! He speaks and we are reassured and comforted, and this is the message: "Let not your heart be troubled. Ye believe in God, believe also in me, In my Father's house are many mansions, if it were not so I would have told you I go to prepare a place for you. I will come again and receive you."

The subject of this sketch Arvia Everett Shaffer, was born August 8, 1881 died June 19, 1909, aged 27 years, 10 months, and 16 days.

He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Shaffer, being the fourth child of seven children. Three brothers preceded him in death. He was married to Alta Hartzog,
Sept 4, 1904. To this union was born one child, Little Edna May. About the year 1902, he connected himself with the Evangelical Lutheran church, and about one year ago he united with the Arcadia Methodist church. His life was consistent. He was an agreeable spirit, and he belonged to that class of men whose vision was broad as the world. He believed life was worth while and that days were God's gift to man and not to be spent and wasted, but to be used in making the world better and happier. He adjusted himself to the tasks of life in such manner as made the routine daily toil to become pleasure ground. At the time of his death, he was a member of the Arcadia I.O.O.F. also the Arcadia Band. He taught the young men's class in the Methodist Episcopal Sunday School.

His death leaves a home circle broken, his wife, child, and mother in-law will feel the loss most keenly for to them and their happiness he was devoted, a father, mother, two brothers, one sister together with friends and relatives will mourn his loss.
The funeral conducted by Rev. A.D. Alexander assisted by Rev Godwin and Shank was held at the Methodist Episopal church Monday June 21. The funeral was attended by one thousand of his neighbors and friends.

Interment in the Dunkard Cemetery.
